  1. as always, baseball is held to a higher standard than football. football can get away with scab games, and probably would do just fine. basketball, star-driven as it is, could probably get away with scab players better than baseball. but if baseball were to go that way... hoo boy! there would be outrage! empty stadiums! jerseys rent in the streets! and also the fans would still yell at the greedy players union for not settling for less of a share of revenues.
  2. there's a part of me that thinks that, hell, if people gambling on baseball can get people to actually care about baseball (like football, which is driven greatly by sports gambling) then lets let people gamble on baseball. i wish the betting shit was either better disguised, or like, not stupid, but it is what it is. like, hey, here are our picks for today's daily fantasy line, and here's actually why, with information and somesuch, not just tacked on like, blah blah blah, and now here's the betting line. awkward pause. and now more talking about the games.... it's crazy, right, because people lap up any and all gambling & fantasy football talk, but once it comes to baseball, people get all antsy. baseball gets constantly held to a higher standard of what we'll allow as fans, and it suffers for it.
  3. =86dreamer post_id=84814 time=1642599527 user_id=97] I am a big hall guy, and unable to distinguish who did from who didn't, so I just go with who I think are the best in comparison to others that have played their same position historically: Arod Bonds Clemens Schilling Jones Rolen Sheffield Kent Helton Wagner I'll vote for Papi next time, nothing personal. Further down the best all time 1B list than any of these are at their respective position.
  4. i think i had totally no idea that he played 17 games for the vegas mets in 2017.
  5. so... what if the mets had actually traded for barry larkin instead of mike bordick? would we have been telling everyone "welcome alarkin?" for the past 20+ years? he did hurt his knee in august, and did not play in september. of course that specific injury would not have happened if the circumstances changed, but would he have been enough of a difference over bordick to meaningfully impact the worid series outcome?
  6. gary carter is 26th in metly bWAR, with lagares, nimmo and backman ahead of him, and mcneil, ventura, and granderson behind him. as much of a leader and transformative figure as he was, that's a hard sell. keith is 6th, behind wright, straw, beltran, fonzie, and jose, just ahead of hojo. and there are pitchers ahead of these guys too. obviously, it's much more of a strictly-WAR issue, but on-field performance has to be something of a consideration...
  7. hard to believe he was the centerpiece of the dontrelle/miggy blockbuster trade way, way back when!
  8. so, luis castillo then. which is what i would want to get back in return. alternatively, are there enough at bats to go around if we were to zobrist him? i'm a little concerned about cano, and squirrel is a better cog in that particular type of machine than jd or dom. even if we have the dh next year. but then, would we be better off with a solid starter than a solid super-ute who backs us up on many positional fronts? the answer is likely yes.
  9. well, if lenny dykstra doesn't like it, then how could i? oh... yeah... wow, that was really easy. i guess i just had to try even just a little bit. yeah, i'm totally not opposed to this signing. was it safe? probably. are we a win-now team that can't fuck around with their managerial hiring? yeah. is he a bad fit for the job? fuck no.
  10. i'm hoping for a christmas miracle. or maybe new year's
  11. so with stroman out of the picture, and there seemingly being a need for, if not a reliable #3 pitcher, at least a #3 with potential.... where do the mets turn next? or are they done? the next two pitchers out there are rodon and kershaw. kershaw would be delightful if healthy, but i don't know how healthy he could be. is that the kind of move where, hey if it works, we kick ass, and if not, we're still got depth available in all the other guys we have? either way, between the work ethic and attitude, i feel like we'd have a hell of clubhouse. next up down the line are KH Kim, Grienke, and.. uh... yusei kikuchi or... yeesh.. michael pineda. or do you think we'd pivot and look to make a trade, perhaps for a luis castillo from the reds? you tell me.
  12. damn, i totally woudla brought him back for that money. i would think the mets would have too. dunno. he was exciting and fun to watch. i'll miss him. he was very out front with racial equality issues and i liked that.
  13. ooh! newly ex-met javy baez.
  14. =Fman99 post_id=82155 time=1638300823 user_id=86] I'm depressed. I love watching this guy play. Like all former Mets, destined for greatness in his post-Flushing career, so there's that.
  15. like... do you expect him to say anything different? "damn, i guess i have to play with the fucking redbird now, since my asshole agent screwed up the deal with the team i really wanted to be on. ugh. yadi fucking molina, goldy and arenado? i have to play with these guys? fuck. well, i'll try to make the best of it, i suppose. it's all good. i suck anyway, and the st. louis fans will quickly figure that out. LFGM!"
  16. damn, i'm pretty happy about this. which means... well... it's the mets so. but anyway, i'm pretty happy about this!

  18. Bob Alpacadaca wrote: Nov. 29, 10:36 a.m. The Mets are re-engaged in talks with Max Scherzer, with negotiations coming to a head, reports SNY's Andy Martino. Martino reported on Sunday that the Mets had offered Scherzer roughly $42 million per year over three or four years. With the CBA expiring on Dec. 1 and a lockout likely looming, Scherzer is expected to make his free agent decision at some point on Monday. As the Mets have been negotiating with Scherzer, two of their other pitching targets -- Kevin Gausman and Jon Gray -- have signed elsewhere. Gausman landed with the Toronto Blue Jays and Gray signed with the Texas Rangers. According to Martino, if the Mets don't wind up with Scherzer, they are likely to turn to the trade market to fill their starting rotation need. Guess there is something they don't like about Stroman, or his asking price is too high. that kinda sucks if so. i really like stroman, and would hope they could bring him back. hell, i want him back even if we get max.
  19. thats a pretty good deal for the cards.
  20. broken open question: brooks & dunston regular bonus question: 178 regular question: dave magadan
  21. i don't think for a second that the mets were going to go over the QO. that said, i do think a mets gm being in place could have been in a position to offer a low first year, with incentives, and some interesting options. but we wouldn't have matched $21M guaranteed.
  22. he'd be a pretty damned find 3b.

  24. they would lose the pick by not getting the pick that someone else would have given up for signing him. so, like, now, the mets have no syndergaard but they do have a 2nd round pick. if he accepted, they would have him, for a year, but no 2nd round pick for long term investment. him accepting the mets' QO would mean that the angels would keep their pick, instead of giving it to us. if we could have had our cake, we wouldn't get to eat it.
  25. the qualifying offer is approx. an $18M one-year deal that teams can offer to their prospective free agents - at least those who were with the team for the entire year and had not accepted it previously. if the player accepts the offer, they're signed for a year at ~ $18M, after which they would be eligible to become a free agent once more. if they decline, and sign elsewhere, the team would get a compensation pick in the draft (typically 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round depending on... reasons??) to make up for having lost a player that was good enough to offer at least $18M to for one year. for the record, i'm totally cool with noah begging for the QO, not taking it, and going elsewhere. because if we didn't offer it, we would've gotten nothing for losing him. he effectively did us a solid, in exchange for going elsewhere to get paid way more than he should have.
