  1. 103 wins in first place. defeat the cards in 3 defeat the dodgers in 6 defeat the mariners in 6
  2. nah, i deserve the loss, simply for choosing, of all my other possible pitchers, to sit him the day before his next start, and failing to doublecheck it. or, quadruple-check it. i did it to myself, basically. nice to know that i was good enough to win, but too stupid to pull it off LOL. i didn't think i'd have a chance in hell of even getting close after the first day. so it's a moral victory. and i'm also wishing our fantasy season continued through the end of the regular, because it's way too early to only have one league (otto) left to pay attention to.
  3. well, you can't win the league if you sit your ace. congrats seo! amazing playoff run!
  4. well... that's annoying. despite having had set my lineup (and checked it a few times) for today, apparently, yahoo saw fit to leave sandy alcantara and wade miley on the bench on the bench today. coulda been a 5-5 tie going into the last day. oh well... that's what i get for trusting that my set lineup would stay there...
  5. i remember maury wills mostly for the 1987 topps turn back the clock card extolling his base-stealing abilities. it's crazy that he went from 35 to 104 and back to 40 stolen bases over three years, with virtually the same on base percentage. the 94 stolen bases in '65 is also damned impressive. i'd loe to see more basestealing in today's game. stolen bases and triples (and bunt hits) are among the most exciting plays in the game. homers are cool and all, but those are exciting!
  6. larry brown, 7 all star games, 13 home runs. wait... archie ware. 4 all star games, 3 home runs. oh. lyman bostock. 1 all star game. zero home runs. sigh... including negro league stats makes this tricky. i only got through the first basemen on bbref. i quit. i should have quit. i kept going. artie wilson. 9 all star games, zero home runs. i think we have a winner.
  7. seo dropping the hammer on day one of the playoffs, after the massive 1-4 upset. five home runs on a monday. DAMN!
  8. like, even if the mets are now an appropriately functioning, averagely-run team, that would be a newsworthy accomplishment and something worth celebrating. it seems as if they're better than that, and on their way to more. i'm cool with it. making wholesale changes in an organizational culture in the span of two years is remarkable. i mean, you can turn an organization into shit in less time if you really put your mind to it. but to turn the mets from, lets be honest, an absolute laughing stock, into what sounds like a bit of a model organization, that's impressive.
  9. math boners are the best kind. well, except for all the actual sexy kinds.
  10. Edgy MD wrote: It's that tight. McNeil, according to current estimates, needs one more hit than Goldschmidt to finish ahed of him, and two more hits than Freeman. how do you figure? i figure that, freeman would need to go 0-13 to drop his batting average below mcneil's, and goldy would have to go 0-4. mcneil needs to go 5-5 to move ahead of freeman, and 2-2 to move ahead of goldy. if freddy takes an 0-4 and mcneil goes 4-4, jeff takes the lead. oh, i think i get it. if goldschmidt goes 0-1 and jeff goes 1-1, goldy still has the lead, but then if they keep getting hits at the same rate thereafter, jeff would eventually overtake him before the end of the season, assuming some reasonable rate of at bats remaining. is that it? if they both go 3-4 in their next game, jeff would have the lead, as his denominator is smaller. i wonder how well that holds up for varying hit rates through the rest of the season... <-- this is a fun math problem that i'm tempted to explore, but am going to force myself to probably not attempt to.
  11. wonder what the qualifications will be... and if luis will have enough games to qualify. i'm expecting it should come down to a player playing no more than some percentage of his games at one position, and possibly playing at least some number of games at three positions. which will of course be interesting, as guillorme has 67.5% of his defensive games at 2b, with more than 10 at SS & 3b. Mcsquirrel, on the other hand, has 71.5% of his defensive games at 2b, with 31 in LF and 6 in RF. both are excellent defenders. mcneil might be better, and may be more versatile.
  12. in the NL, last year, around this time in the season (i'm not checking exact games-played situations here), there were 8 teams with less than a 10% chance of making the playoffs, per fangraphs. one of those teams was the cardinals, who actually made it. jerks. so, 7 teams were in it, until an 8th crashed the party. in the NL his year, there are 8 teams with less than a 10% chance of making the playoffs, as of today. in fact, those 8 teams all have about a zero percent chance of making the playoffs, and have for a while. which means we have a party of 7 again, with no uninvited guests. so, last year was a more inclusive environment. in the NL at least. the AL is more inclusive this year, with a party of 7 compared to a party of 6 last year. although, last year, seattle and oakland were seen hanging around outside waiting for the bouncer to turn his back. the twins have recently been disinvited from this year's party, so i'll give the inclusive edge to the '22 AL in other words, the playoff format hasn't _really_ rewarded all that much more mediocrity than last years, if at all.
  13. quick. what's the minimum distance from first base to second base, before the new rule with bigger bases? it's not 90' and even if it was 90', shaving 6" off the distance, reducing it by 0.55% while giving the players 44% more area on a base upon which to place their delicate fingers and hamate bones without getting crushed by immovable spikes, then it's a fair tradeoff. i'm cool with it. the shift thing is stupid, but i think that will play itself out.
  14. Willets Point wrote: According to https://www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov/about/official sources: The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period. well, that's much better. whew!
  15. when i was growing up, i was told that hispanic meant half-spanish, intending it to be an derogation towards those who were not fully from spain, and were therefore some combination of native and (worse still) african blood alongside the (more pure and therefore good) spaniard blood. i'll pause here while you take a few moments to take all that in. so, i'm reasonably certain (forgot the sarcasm tags, sorry) that this view is wrong, but there's a chance that such similar thinking is behind the half-month-to-half-month hispanic heritage month. "give 'em half a month for the spanish side, and half a month for the native and african side - we're so inclusive, and celebrate diversity so well, yay us!"
  16. i turned on this game in the top of the 7th, and was worried, based on the score, that degrom hadn't made his start. glad to see i was wrong.
  17. =Fman99 post_id=106581 time=1662574354 user_id=86] I'd be happier still if we could score runs via a series of sequential singles and doubles, instead of just taking 27 cracks at a dinger like they've been doing.
  18. oh sure, get all the offense outta the way for degrom's start tonight. i see how it is.
  19. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=105499 time=1661571844 user_id=68] Well, the Mets cant even score two and a half runs a game for deGrom. So it's incredible that deGrom has any wins this season. By that measure, yeah, he might only win one more game the rest of the way.
  20. Edgy, your projection system is crap too because it can't tell me how many homers Pete will hit before he dies, given his current yearly rate. Because you don't know how long he will live. You suck and should feel badly about yourself. There's a projection system called marcel. It's named after a monkey from a sitcom. It does a weighted average of the prior three seasons of a players performance to predict the subsequent season. It kinda works. Kinda doesn't. It actually works better than you'd guess. Why do I bring it up? Because while you may reject the numbers that it produces as unrealistic for a variety of reasons, it still does exactly what it says it does, and what it aims to do. Better projection systems are out there and used all the time. But Marcel's results are unassailable in that they simply turn a mathematical crank that is clearly presented. Such is the same for “on pace for” season stats. In fact, to use any sort of estimated future playing time would be to turn an objective projection system as edgy has, and turn it into something purely subjective, and therefore rife with flaws. If you want to independently calculate Jacob degrom a rest of season stats, you're more than welcome to. Please post your assumptions so that we can tear them to shreds.

I expect better.

  23. the boras one isn't the braves doing anything untoward to enhance their farm system - its the braves sending draft picks and prospects to teams that are dumping veterans. the braves tanking to build their system in the past is also not untoward, no matter how much we dislike that approach. fact is, it works. the international signing thing, sure. but i doubt they're alone in that regard. not by a long shot.
  24. every one of them was, at one time or another, a nationally ranked curling sweeper.
