  1. Granderson pops up to short right. 1-0 MFYs

  3. G-Fafif wrote: the Mets don't play in the Colonial. Well, eff you, too. 'Ray Bucknell 'Ray Bucknell 'Ray for the orange and the blue 'Ray, 'ray, 'ray, 'ray 'Ray for the orange and the blue on edit...it just occurred to me that Bucknell hasn't played in the Colonial League since the mid-eighties, which is when I was actually there. So, yeah, rag on the Colonial!

"Won't you join us and our friend Jeromy starring in the brand new comedy..." (together) "...Off the Hook!" Castillo & Perez gave it two thumbs up.
  6. The article doesn't get to the bottom of whether it's true or not, but there's some speculation that he's MLB's answer to Jerry West.
  7. The guy with the baseball goatee, the goofy expression, and the Texaco attendant's cap is Chris Johnson, second-year third baseman for your Houston Astros. After a surprisingly productive rookie season (.308 batting average, 11 HRs in 341 ABs), he's off to a slow start this year, batting .185. Or maybe he's just a .185 hitter who got lucky last year. His BABIP for 2010 was a ridiculous .387. Bleacher Report states that he swung at 43.1% of pitches outside the strike zone, which means that Jeff Francoeur could give him a few lessons on improving his batting eye. He does have 3 HBPs this year, seventh in the NL, so he hits the ball with his body about as frequently as he hits it with the bat. No need to worry about this guy. Keep the ball off the plate and watch him swing. Next up, shortstop. And, yeah, what Grimm said about artificial quirks.
  8. Edgy DC wrote: I know the answer to this one. Mandatory 50 game suspension. Since the facts aren't official until the guy faces a judge months or maybe more after the act, and we demand swifter justice in the baseball world, cut it to 30 if he pleads no contest to the league. I can't imagine that a defense lawyer would allow a client to plead "no contest" to anyone other than the judge presiding over the case, but I like the 50 game suspension upon conviction idea. Any one of these guys is a Leyritz waiting to happen.

It's not that I don't know what they are; it's just that I couldn't calculate them. Personally, I still feel the tiniest bit disingenuous if using a statistic that I couldn't calculate myself. this , when I see it written I tend to move along . When I look at a batting average or an earned run average they immediately connect in my mind to what's going on and how an individual player might be performing. I also know that such things are often out of that players control. Trying to make that connection with WAR and VORP is just not easy. I was in the middle of typing almost this exact post, but you beat me to it, ya bollox. One of my New Year's resolutions this year was to really get an understanding of WAR. I've bought the Tom Tango "The Book" book, but haven't had the time to spend on it that it requires. But, yeah, the concept of "Wins Over Replacement" doesn't mean diddly to me until I know what it means to award a player a win. Back to the thread topic...I have absolutely no idea how to tell a good defensive catcher from a bad one.
  10. My first thought when I saw the photos was that Dillon Gee had somehow found his way back into the rotation.
  11. I turned it on just in time to see the centaur ground a single up the middle. Fuckit.
  12. Two starts in a row for Nickeas. A reward for his Homeric greatness yesterday? Something up with Thole?

  14. I'm crying. I'm crying because I just wasted three minutes of my life reading this crap. I'm posting to this thread in the Crane Pool Forum to talk about how much I'm crying because I just read this crap. Me. Chad Ochoseis. I have the right. I spent time reading this crap.

  16. The Ollie trade - making some sweet lemonade out of the punch to the lemons that was the Duaner Sanchez injury - was probably Omar's finest moment. The 2008 signing was probably his worst. Though I admit that I liked it at the time. The choices were to sign Ollie, sign Derek Lowe, or raise the white flag. In the winter of 2008, Ollie looked like the best option of the three.
  17. Vaseline can be awfully slippery, but it kept Gaylord Perry stuck to baseball for 22 years. Stick around long enough, you get your WAR. Betcha Phil Niekro's pretty far up there, too.
  18. The quintessential "peaked as a rookie" guy...Mark Fidrych
  19. the new jersey devils and new jersey nets currently play closer to the city limits (5.99 miles) than the ny red bulls (6.25 miles), Weird, because the PATH stop for Harrison comes before the PATH stop for Newark if you're traveling from NYC.
  20. The Red Bulls play their home games in Harrison, NJ (motto: "Congratulations! You're no longer in Newark!!!), so they're no more New York than the Jets or Giants. Are they counting the Jets and Giants, but somehow not the Nets and Devils? There's some logic there, as the Nets and Devils don't use "New York" in their team names. Are they going all New York State and counting the Islanders and the Buffalo Bills? Are they just talking out of their butts? I'm going with "butts" here. And, yeah, what Edgy said about those other professional teams.

She needs to haul him to granny's so we have a babysitter for school offdays next week. She's offered to give me a ride home. I'm going via the BQE and can prolly give you a ride. PM if you're interested.
