  2. John Axford, RHP (1-0, 2.57 ERA, 1 Sv, 6 G, .167 Opp BA, 4/6 1st batter retired) I like this "first batter retired" stat for relievers. I like even more that for four of their eight relievers, the first batter reached safely at least 40% of the time. Yeah, I know...small sample size.
  3. I think Bonds is the clear #1, even though most of his big big numbers were put up in San Francisco. I always thought of Brock and Raines as being about even, but Raines actually had slightly more stolen bases per plate appearance than Brock during his time in the NL East, and he had a higher batting average. And the only two aspects of the game where Brock was any good at all were stealing and hitting for average. So Raines is my #2. OE - Bonds was unquestionably a jerk, almost definitely was a steroid user and a felon, and in general was a disgrace to the game. But he wasn't noticeably any of those things during his time in Pittsburgh, so I didn't hold that against him here.
  4. Pagan is about 10 runs above a "replacement-level" player [nitpick]Actually, at least on BBRef, it's 10 runs above an average defensive player; the replacement level adjustment is made at the end.[/nitpick] I haven't seen much non-Met related baseball this year, but Pagan certainly looks like a reasonable All-Star candidate. Best defensive player in the majors and fourth best overall player in the NL? Maybe a bit of a stretch. But a fine player this year, no question. He's 8-for-11 in steal attempts (a stellar 73 percent). Without looking at the actual stats, this is something that I think the Mets have been really good at this year - stealing a lot of bases without getting caught. Bay is something like 7 for 7, no? And they're doing it without Beltran, who is the master of this skill.
  5. Angel Pagan is currently fourth in WAR among NL position players, mostly on the strength of his world-beating, best-in-the-majors at any position, +11 defensive runs (relative to average player, not replacement). Pagan has been a very nice surprise this year, and he's turned from Alfred E. Neumann into Albert Einstein in terms of on-field smarts in the space of one off-season, but I'm not sure whether this observation says more about Pagan himself or about the WAR metric. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2010-value-batting.shtml#players_value_batting::13 OE: Hot damn, I'm George Theodore! I think I'm going to go crash into the guy in the next office.
  6. Wuddaya know...Jay Payton is still in baseball. I never would have guessed.

  8. Back of rotisserie roster fodder with speed and NL East experience who's been around long enough to have compiled? I'm going to take a Francoeur-like swing at my last strike and guess Endy. on edit...just looked Endy's stats up. Not even close.
  9. Beltran?
  10. Andruw Jones?

  12. The Mets store at CF has them. Don't know where else they're available.
  13. Whatever brain cells I had that once held Hideki Irabu data have mercifully died off. BBRef shows him as 3-8 with a 5.74 ERA and 16 saves in his only season as a reliever, which was for Texas in 2002. So, yes, he was a reliever but, no, he was not decent.

The only place you can't see is the LF corner, so I had absolutely no idea what was going on with the Cervelli play until I got home and read the IGT.
  16. I'll be there tonight. KC's seats, as won with my lucky Mookie ticket at the last CPF get-together. Section 430. Thanks again, KC.
  17. Takahashi 4.5 Bay .5 Davis .5 Feliciano .7 Acosta .7 Perez .2
  18. Angel making a play for some serious Schaefer tonight.
  19. One day, soon, we may have to admit that Castillo's defense doesn't suck. Nice play fielding a grounder off Ike's glove to get Nyjer Friggin' Morgan.
  20. I'd like to think that Scott Boras is having that conversation with Ollie sometime soon, even if Omar and Jerry aren't.
