  1. Interesting quote. Jerry on Lucas Duda: I was really impressed with his swing during batting practice. Just from what I observed today, from a defensive player and what I observed during batting practice, I think theyre going to have to find a place for this young man to play, here in the major leagues next year. Again, I hope Im right, because he looks like the type of guy who can produce runs immediately and that is something that is lacking here." Maybe I'm reading into this too much, but it seems like Jerry realizes that whoever is filling out the lineup card next year, it's not going to be him.
  2. We have got to find that thread with the bridesmaids.

  4. This must be it: http://archives.cranepoolforum.net/2000/f1_t2042.shtml Very similar. But no witty double entendre in the thread title!
  5. No kidding, really? So much for my original idea.
  6. That is, beat my All-Time, All-Johnson Team. Rotation 1913 Walter Johnson (36-7, 1.14 ERA) 1997 Randy Johnson (20-4, 2.28 ERA) 2009 Josh Johnson (15-5, 3.23 ERA) 1971 Jerry Johnson (12-9, 2.97 ERA) Lineup 1. 1996 Lance Johnson CF (BA: 333 9 HR, OPS: 841, 50 SB) 2. 2007 Kelly Johnson 2B (BA: 276, 16 HR, OPS: 832) 3. 2006 Nick Johnson 1B (BA: .290, 23 HR, OPS: 948) 4. 1987 Howard Johnson 3B (BA: 298, 36 HR, OPS: 928) 5. 1933 Roy Johnson LF (BA: .313, 10 HR, OPS: 853) 6. 2006 Reed Johnson RF (BA: 319, 12 HR, OPS: 869) 7. 1999 Charles Johnson C (BA: .251, 16 HR, OPS: .753) 8. 1921 Ernie Johnson SS (BA: 295, 1 HR, OPS: .697) Who's my fifth starter you ask? Walter Johnson. My closer? Walter Johnson. Pinch hitter? Pinch runner? Defensive replacement? I think you already know... I'll tell you what, I'll make it fair. Feel free to use two names, one for the lineup, one for the rotation. You still can't top my Johnson.
  7. Hot naked cheerleaders.
  8. I will remember him sucking just the way I expected him to suck. I will remember being frustrated that so many people had a hard time seeing that he sucked. I will remember his one saving grace being that he sucked less than the guy we traded him for.
  9. So Mejia looks like he will be the starter Saturday, pending a bullpen session. I wonder when the philosophy shifted so that one good AAA start is enough to warrant a callup to the bigs.
  10. I don't know that there is another Met less qualified to be a ball-boy than Ollie. Maybe Mackey Sasser.
  11. Random Prediction: Castillo will hit a HR in this game.
  12. Mets face Houston and try not to embarrass themselves.

And they say I'm the lawyer.
  14. Pitching phenom goes down with Tommy John. Dibble says something stupid. It must be summer with all these reruns.
  15. I wrote this in 2005: When we win one, yes you know you're gonna see, You're gonna see us get shut out a game or two When we lose one, don't get too melancholy Cuz you know we'll win the next game just for you Cliff will hit one, in the tenth and jump for glee And you'll be feeling really great about our crew Then we'll go west, and we'll lose two out of three To a last place team cuz that is what we do And we will play 500 ball Because we are a 500 team We will win one, lose one, all year long We'll make you smile, we'll make you scream When we're winning, yes I know it's such a tease Cuz when Pedro's on there's nothing we can't do When we're losing, we keep piling up the E's And leave you feeling really frustrated and blue When you come home(When you come home), when you turn on that TV You don't know which team will show up to play for you And if you grow old, you know what it's gotta be you know this team is prematurely aging you And we will play 500 ball Because we are a 500 team We will win one, lose one, all year long We'll make you smile, we'll make you scream fa la la fa la la Da Da Da Dun Diddle Un Diddle Un Diddle Uh Da Da fa la la fa la la Da Da Da Dun Diddle Un Diddle Un Diddle Uh Da Da

  17. The picture makes it looks much worse than it was. Ryan got him in a headlock, but failed to land anything hard on him. You wouldn't be able to walk away after taking 3 solid punches from a guy who throws 100 mph...much less walk away without a scratch. If that's the hardest Nolan Ryan can hit, then he's a wuss too. Still, it's hard to figure out what Robin's strategy was there. Seldom do you see a guy charge the mound and make no attempt to throw a punch. It seemed like his intent was to go out there and shake dandruff into Ryan's chest. Weird. It serves him right though for violating the explicit rules of Mound Charging/Bar Fighting/Road Rage. You make a big demonstration of how angry you are and express your intent to kick your opponent's ass. Only when you are sufficiently surrounded by other people that reaching him is an impossibility, do you make any serious effort to reach your opponent.
  18. Which would require everyone to dress in Rodriguez 75 jerseys.
  19. Well it's certainly a better idea than Dickheads.
  20. Smart move by the Mets. Ultimately, I'd be fine if they just paid out the guaranteed years on the contract and voided the option. I hope that's where they settle it.
  21. If we lose his contract, that will indeed be Good News Day. But you're right, the Mets won and no elderly relatives were harmed. Good News Day.
  22. Frayed Knot wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: Because having designated ninth-inning guys is a bad thing. Just because it's become standard, doesn't mean it's right. Jerry said in the paper today that the Mets will go with closer by committee, with the day's closer being determined by matchups. How isn't that good news? I hope it catches on! I'd put it more like having a designating a guy strictly as your ninth inning guy isn't the ideal thing, which is not necessarily the same thing as meaning that the presence of that guy on the roster is a bad thing. Now the contract and the behavior make it a different story but I wouldn't say that the Mets are a better team on the field now than they were last week on account of Frankie's busted thumb. Exactly. Whether you go by committee or designated guy, there is no way to argue that losing your best reliever makes the pen stronger. I don't like the rules surrounding a "Closer" either (especially the part about not pulling him when he's clearly struggling) but arguing that KRod's injury is good news is just as silly as the Closer Rules themselves.
