  1. How about Alou again for the 1998 OF spot.
  2. 1994 OF Moises Alou?
  3. Howard Johnson, 3B, 1991
  4. David Wright, 3B, 2007
  5. I think it's still pretty clear he's done a very good job of rebuilding that team. I have a tough time seeing getting the team to the World Series for the first time in 70 years as a failure.
  6. Funnily enough, Reed and Familia each pitched exactly 77 2/3 innings this year. Reed gave up fewer hits, fewer walks, fewer runs and struck out more batters.
  7. Centerfield wrote: I've had some dumb ideas while posting on this board. Advocating for Heyward over Cespedes last winter may have been my dumbest. Imagine the boos he would have gotten at Citi this year? Wow. I was also in favor of signing Heyward. Heyward 2016 WAR: 1.5 Cespedes 2016 WAR: 2.9 Also Heyward is four years younger. Too early to call that the "dumbest" idea ever.
  8. Centerfield wrote: Like super quiet here. I think it's clear this won't get done by the end of the World Series. I fear he's gone. Think about it the other way: if you were Cespedes, why would you sign now? Even if you wanted to come back to the Mets, you'd still leverage your position to get the best possible deal, which means have 30 teams bidding for your services, right?
  9. After being released from his contract with the Rockies and becoming a free agent, Reyes signed a minor-league contract with the Mets. Reyes' Mets contract will mirror the same length as the Rockies' contract (ie. he will not reach free agency until the end of the 2017 season, assuming the 2018 option is declined). Because it was a minor league contract that was "selected" when they called him up, the Mets must pay Reyes the major league minimum salary. Colorado is credited that amount against all other sums they owe him under the contract. To answer questions: Yes, the Mets' financial obligation will go up a little in 2017, presumably because the ML minimum salary will go up from what it was in 2016. Yes, the Mets could keep Reyes for 2018; but they'd need to be paying him $22 million for that privilege; the Rockies would not be responsible for that; only for the $4M buyout if the option was declined. Otherwise he becomes a free agent at the end of 2017.
  10. I'd like to see them take a flier on Alex Avila. Change of scenery out of the AL central could be good for him. Still a very good defensive catcher even with the offense is inconsistent.
  11. I spend more time thinking about this game than one really should. I also thought that the Mets' return to the postseason (and advancement to the World Series) would have mostly caused this to stop bothering me...but somehow not. Anyway, we have a time machine here. Somebody steals a sign from neck-tattoo, Carlos knows the curve is coming and he rips a double into the gap in right field. Valentin scores. Chavez scores. Anderson Hernandez (!) comes around from first and scores the winning run. So how do the last 10 years change? Definite: -Mets defeat Tigers in 5 games. -Willie Randolph is the Mets' manager through the 2008 season. Reasonable Inference: -Emboldened from their recent championship, team wins one or two more games against the Phillies and retains the division title in 2007. David Wright wins the MVP award. Glavine doesn't pitch on September 30, 2007 as he is held back to start game 1 of the division series against Jeff Francis of the Rockies. -Team holds on to win division title in 2008 as well. Randolph remains manager for first game at Citi Field. Less Clear: -2007 Playoff outcome: would they have also lost to the Red Sox in the World Series? -Santana trade: I think it still happens. Glavine and Hernandez are clearly too old after 2007 playoffs and team will need a front-line starter. Post 2008: Things get a little fuzzier for me. Delgado and Beltran first got hurt in 2009. Reyes might still have been allowed to leave the team after 2011. Could the team have won a championship (maybe 2) in the 2006-08 window, but still have had most of 2009-2014 playing out the same, leading to the resurgence of the team in 2015?
  12. Centerfield wrote: You people are crazy. Of course you make the offer. Free draft pick. He's a middle infielder in the middle of his prime who hits 20+ HR's. He's getting a multi-year deal for big money. And if he accepts it? You just got a power-hitting 2nd baseman in his prime on a one year commitment. Win win. Exactly. This is exactly correct.
  13. If Campbell was the better choice to hit leading off the 8th, why wasn't he starting? I don't think Terry has provided an adequate answer to this.
  14. 572 through 5 seasons. (2012-2016)
  15. I thought I was over 2015 and then this game happened. People in the crowd actually booed Familia. They didn't do that to Heilman on 10/19/06. I hope those people never come to another Mets game, ever. Noah is amazing and we are so lucky to have him.
  16. A successful Mets season is defined as making the postseason. A team must either win the divison or win the wild card game for it to meet the definition of "making the postseason."

  18. Not using Zach Britton in that game (and he was not injured) is managerial malpractice. Especially since the game was played in the no-strategy league and there is no concern about having to pinch hit for him. I don't agree, but at least can understand the argument about why one saves the closer while on the road for circumstances in which your team gets the lead. But in an elimination game that went extra innings? There is no excuse for not using your single-best reliever.
  19. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I remember after Jerry was fired Chip Hale was the guy I was rooting for to get the manager job. I think I'd welcome him back as a bench coach. Chip Hale was the runner-up to Terry for that job. I too would like to see him as the Mets' manager when Terry retires (either this year or next).
  20. I might put Johnson at first and Rivera at second. But otherwise endorse this plan.
  21. MFS62 wrote: The precedent is closer Willie Hernandez who won both the CY Young and MVP awards for the Tigers in the same year. Dennis Eckerlsey did that too. The problem is that both were poor choices for the MVP (and, for Eckersley, also the Cy Young Award) in those years.
  22. Umpires: HP - Mike Winters 1B - Jeff Nelson 2B - Mike Everitt 3B - Jim Wolf LF - CB Bucknor RF - Quinn Wolcott Replay: Scott Barry and Mark Carlson
  23. The Mets haven't had a daytime start for a playoff game since Game 1 of the Division Series in 2006; and that was only because the Yankees had a home playoff game at the same time. I think they had a couple of weekend day games in 2000 in the Division Series.
  24. Chicago + New York or Chicago + San Francisco = biggest combined markets for potential viewers.
