  1. Damn it. Stanton was really impressive.
  2. Rooting for Stanton. As long as it isn't either of the MFYs, no problem . No Berman means I am watching for the first time in years.
  3. He didn't sue Torre. Plus, no player has a deeper pocket than MLB itself. Hernandez' complaint is interesting, in that it points out he got good performance ratings and postseason assignments prior to Torre taking office. Example: Following Torre’s arrival, Hernandez received less “exceeds standard” ratings on his evaluations. Furthermore, there was an increased criticism of his on-field situation handling, his ability to make correct calls in the game, and his overall quality as an umpire—areas in which Hernandez had consistently received praise before 2011. There is, I suppose, an alternate explanation for what Hernandez is alleging is discrimination, which is that MLB may well have been doing a crappy job of evaluating umpires prior to 2011.

  5. Lefty Specialist wrote: But July 3, 2010 was a bummer. Mets came in 10 games over .500, playing the Nats in DC. We'd decided to make a weekend of it with friends and see the new Nats ballpark. R.A.Dickey, who'd just been picked up off the scrap heap outpitching a rookie Stephen Strasburg. 2-2 after 7, crisply played. Mets score 3 in the top of the 8th to go up 5-2, but Parnell gives up a run in the bottom of the 8th to make it 5-3. To the bottom of the 9th. K-Rod, the new closer, had been solid if a little scary up to this point, always putting a runner or two on but always escaping. Today, though, he. just. couldn't. get. anybody. out. Nats scored 3 runs, including a walk-off single by the 43,000 year old Ivan Rodriguez. Just disastrous. It was an inflection point for both him and the team. He was never quite the same after that, and the Mets tanked as well I was there as well and also remember that game. Adam Dunn hit what would have been a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th that was incorrectly ruled "in play" instead of a homer, and somehow the umpires didn't overturn it.
  6. The Luis Castillo game usually comes to mind when this question is asked.
  7. I'm beginning to worry this might not be the Mets' year.
  8. Seems like it's been a lot longer than 5 years. http://archives.thecranepool.net/17900/f14_t17982.shtml
  9. Oh, come on.
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: Yup, might even get it in -- GASP!! -- in under 2:30 if things don't go haywire from here. Oops. I guess Fernando wasn't going to have a 0.00 ERA forever.
  11. deGrom is a curious choice as first PH from the pitching staff. Might have gone with Syndergaard instead.
  12. Which is why we have Rene Rivera playing first base? Gary had the first part of the reference but felt like he didn't want to force it.
  13. I have a distinctly fond memory from a number of years back, he gave a talk at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens on what goes into televising a baseball game. One of those people who you can just tell from the moment they speak that they are incredibly intelligent and tremendously funny.
  14. Strangely, a lot of the Mets road games I go to wind up being soul-crushing losses, usually of the walk-off variety for the home team. It's actually a problem. There have been a few good ones, though. I can pick out several satisfying victories at that "other" stadium in New York but my favorite road win is still May 23, 2009: the Omir Santos game.
  15. Looks like Hoffman and Guerrero are set up for next year, and will go in with Thome and Larry Jones. I do hope Edgar gets in by year 10.
  16. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Yeah. I imagine the Mets were looking like heavy favorites 11 months ago. I don't think we were. And not just because Cespedes wasn't re-signed yet at that point. The Mets need more hitting even with Cespedes re-signed. Same thing that was true last off-season is true this off-season.
  17. It can't possibly just take Steven Matz to get McCutchen or we would have done so already, right? McCutchen is getting $14M in 2017 and the same in 2018 with a team option ($1M buyout).
  18. SteveJRogers wrote: Other than not being around longer than the 6 full seasons and the obvious championship, what else could you ask for? At least one championship and a long (say, 10+ year) tenure of general success. Valentine is not worthy of the Mets Hall of Fame. Neither is Collins, or Phillips, or Minaya, or Alderson.
  19. ESPN reported that voting totals (not released to public) were: Schuerholz: 16 of 16 ballots Selig: 15 of 16 ballots Piniella: 7 of 16 ballots Everyone else named on 4 or fewer ballots
  20. FYI, career WAR as Met: 1. Seaver 2. Wright 3. Gooden 4. Koosman 5. Strawberry 6. Beltran 7. Alfonzo 8. Reyes 9. Leiter 10. Fernandez
  21. Mets Guy in Michigan wrote: What do you think about Omar? Signed a lot of players who became studs, created the 2006-08 teams. Nope. Also no to Phillips and Valentine. If you're a manager/executive, you either need a championship, or an extremely long tenure to even be in the discussion, I think.
  22. There's a funny quote that I can't quite remember/find that is appropriate here. The gist of it is that it is important to praise with the same speed at which criticism is leveled. So, Jeff, when you're reading this later (because we know you do): good job!
  23. seawolf17 wrote: I would rather vote for Clemens than Schilling. I agree, and there's no doubt that Clemens is more "deserving" anyway. I would vote for them both.
  24. Chad Ochoseis wrote: So I'm fine with keeping a borderline HOFer like Mark McGwire out. In a world without steroids, McGwire is only a "borderline" hall-of famer? I have a tough time with that. He's #13 all-time in adjusted OPS.
  25. Bagwell Bonds Clemens Guerrero Martinez Mussina Raines Ramirez Rodriguez Walker I would have also voted for Curt Schilling if room allowed on the ballot, no matter what a colossal idiot he is.
