  1. Ken Rosenthal has a column at The Athletic today about the Mets and how they should sign Harper or Machado. Such a move would require moxie, creativity and, most importantly, cold hard cash. But if this truly is a new era for the Mets, they should be showing more interest in Harper and Machado than say, the A's and Rays. They should be trying to exploit an opportunity that is available only because Harper and Machado are lingering on the market, and because virtually every team in baseball is acting as if they are carrying infectious diseases. A week ago, when Van Wagenen challenged the rest of the NL East to “come get us,” it came off as false bravado. Go get Harper or Machado, and the GM can utter those words in earnest. And it would be no hollow threat.
  2. Each year these ballots come out, I am surprised to see Roger Clemens getting slightly more votes than Barry Bonds. It's happened every year (this year Clemens was only +2; it's ranged from +1 to +8). I understand (even if I disagree) why voters omit both from their ballots. But I can find no legitimate basis to find one but not the other worthy.
  3. Actual change they could make: fix the scoreboard. Make it bigger, get rid of the ads, put up the lineups at all times.
  4. Including one prospect in the deal from the Mets’ side makes sense. Diaz is established and comes with club control. And no problem with a bad-contract swap of Cano for Bruce/Swarzak. But you don’t include three key prospects in that deal. 3 key prospects is who you trade to get an impact star.
  5. It makes sense that it’s a tough job to fill because whomever takes it will be stuck in the #2 role until Howie retires (which could be 20 years from now). I had hoped Josh was that person because of his lifelong Mets fandom, but he’s not that much younger than Howie (as opposed to, say, when Gary first came aboard to work with Bob Murphy). Can’t fault him for taking more money or a bigger role (cf. Kevin Burkhardt) because there’s only so far you can rise in the ranks of Mets broadcasting.
  6. Unless Josh wanted out, this is an idiotic decision of epic proportions.
  7. That is fair. But I do know that only one of them has served a suspension for domestic violence.
  8. The Mets nominee for the Marvin Miller award was announced today. Each team has a nominee. Selected by teammates. It’s an award that will go to the player who “inspires others to higher levels of achievement by their on-field performances and contributions to their communities.” The Mets’ nominee is Jose Reyes. WTF
  9. CF made a lot of good points but there’s still Curtis Granderson to think about. I mean, he’s got to be one of the best people to have ever played for the Mets, right? That counts an awful lot here.
  10. If necessary, I’d settle for someone being thrown out at the plate on a single. But would prefer a strikeout.
  11. Just GIDP already
  12. Centerfield wrote: I don't see it happening. And like I mentioned before, I think it will be used as an excuse for why we miss out on the top talent available this year. Other excuses: *We expect Cespedes back mid year *Can't block Peter Alonso. Followed by leaving Peter Alonso in AAA. *With Mejia and Montero returning, we feel like we had some depth... *Todd Frazier. New launch angle. *Lagares also returning. We already have too many outfielders (this one might be kinda true) Amen. Go get the best available talent. Then worry about if you have 4 outfielders for 3 spots. Trades are also possible when one has a surplus of talent. Plus, you know, injuries tend to happen on this team.
  13. I agree with the point about spending money wisely, of course. I just think that he Yelich trade was the biggest offseason factor in getting the Brewers where they are. And of course want the Mets to make a similar move this offseason by signing Machado.
  14. smg58 wrote: The Brewers, on the other hand, found the right guy to invest in (Lorenzo Cain) and spent less for two years of Jhoulys Chacin than we did for two years of Jason Vargas. And now they're the top seed in the National League. So don't just throw money at people, be smart about it. They did also trade for a 25 year old future star who proceeded to put up 7.6 WAR. If there’s a player out there like that in the trade market, the Mets should be interested. There are two players like that on the FA market, though.
  15. Going for it means, to me, signing Machado or Harper. Get the best talent available. This might mean having Frazier play first/trading him. I don’t see Jay Bruce fitting in anywhere and would expect him to be traded for anything we can get; or we carry him as a lefty power bat off the bench.
  16. Once the Mets sign Manny Machado (second choice: Bryce Harper) then I’ll start believing things Jeff Wilpon says.
  17. Joe Mauer.
  18. No thanks.

  20. Mickey didn’t handle that well. He could have had deGrom start the 9th, face one batter, and leave to a giant ovation. I think that would have been the far preferable way to handle that decision.
  21. 95 pitches through 7. What’s the limit? 120?
  22. The parade of September relievers *is* stupid. There is a real simple fix: you can call up 40 players in September if you want, but only 25 of them can be active for one game. You can appease the union by making anyone on the expanded roster still accumulate ML service time. If you really want to tweak it, there probably needs to be some fix as well so you can't just de-activate your other starting pitchers when they aren't going, so maybe add the rule that if you were the starting pitcher, you also have to remain one of the 25 active players for the next 3 games (unless on the DL).
  23. Centerfield wrote: SP Seaver SP Gooden SP deGrom SP Koosman SP Cone Al Leiter over Cone. And it's not particularly close.
  24. Moving this back to the original question: I posit that there are four main possible reasons why the Mets have not excelled: 1. Player development/scouting a. Selection of players in amateur draft b. Identifying/signing international free agents c. Developing players’ skills in minor leagues 2. Player acquisition/Roster construction a. Making good trades b. Signing valuable players as free agents c. Selecting proper mix of players for roster/having depth 3. Field management/strategy a. Selection of field manager/coaching staff b. In-game strategy 4. Other a. Culture b. Luck I think 1a and 1b are the biggest problems — as stated above —likely followed by 2b (signing free agents). I also think that it’s clear that the Mets have not done enough of these things consistently well to have the team succeed. Drafting some good players is clearly not sufficent.
  25. By the time of the wildcard game in 2016, Duda, Wright, Lagares (homegrown) were all out for the season, as were D’Arnaud and Walker. That’s a lot of injuries. The Mets seem to plan very poorly for injuries, however. James Loney, Jose Reyes, TJ Rivera and Rene Rivera all started in that game.
