  1. Its funny that Alfonzo comes up as we are talking about these 28-32 year old free agent infield options. The Mets let him go after his age 28 season at which point his production completely fell off a cliff. Out of baseball 4 years later. You dont often get the timing so right as a club as the Mets did there.
  2. I was voting for Walker until I saw the last option. Fonzie!!
  3. Yeah, Walker or Frazier are the guys I would want
  4. I would take a hard pass on Nunez. 1. Speed doesnt age well, he will be 31 this year 2. His career beat OBP last year (.341) was the only time in his career he had an acceptable year in that area, and it was largely driven by an unsustainable high BABIP (.334) well above his career norm. As he slows down, expect it to get lower than even his past norm. 3. Defense is mediocre 4. Yankee taint I dont think he is better than Cabrera and id rather see what Rosario has. Rosario's defense likely makes him a bettet player already.
  5. Hoping for May 1st - not targeting, not planning, hoping. Good thing Bruce is back

At this point, i don't like any of the available 2b/3b options (including Walker and his bad back), and none are a better value than Flores at 2b. If they're not going to sign Moustakas and move Cabrera to 2nd (and i'm not saying that would be a great value move either, depending on what Moose ends up getting), Just sign a utility IFer (Nunez?Reyes?) and spend the money on a SP pitcher (Cobb? Lynn?) and another reliever (preferably LH - Tony Watson?) rather than sign Moustakas, I'd pay the presumably lesser price for Todd Frazier who I think is just as good. Walker is fine with me as well. I do like Lynn though - sign him too! (oh wait we're the Mets...)

    Duda redo?

But it tells you a lot less about how the player performed (because of all the statistical noise-- most of it fielding-related-- that Ceetar outlined) As such, it's got less predictive value than other measures (such as line-drive percentage) besides not being predictive, batting average tells you less about "what happened" already than OBP does. Batting Average has zero advantage, whether looking backwards or forwards, over OBP.

    Duda redo?

Strike outs are pretty much meaningless at the major league level. They are just another out, and hey, you didn't ground into a double play! And you saw 3+ pitches! I might care about strikeouts in the minors, particularly the low minors, only because i'd be worried that if a guy is striking out a lot against poor competition he won't be ablw to hit higher level pitching at all. As for batting average... OBP is a better judge of past performance AND walk rate is a sign of a more sustainable skill over a small sample (even a full season) than batting average is. Given a choice between a rookie who hit .250/.350 and one who hit .350/.350, I would take the first guy every time as I bet he'll be the better player long term as babip evens out.
  11. Thome? Reminds me of Sammy Sosa or Rafael Palmeiro. He was always one of the best, never the very best "one of the best" doesnt belong in the hall? i bet he was a Morris voter too. never of heard of Ballou before today, now i know to stop reading if i see his name in the byline.
  12. Yeah. Right now Wheeler is my 3rd starter, Katz is 4th, Gsellman, Harvey, Montero, Lugo are fighting for #5/bullpen.
  13. Maybe we see if we are contenders and then acquire relievers midseason. They are always available.
  14. I wouldn't count on Harvey - worst pitcher season in Mets history last year. Given the Mets health issues, I would say Wheeler is pretty unavailable.
  15. "Its ok, I guess"
  16. I didnt think of the service time thing. Good point. I think the Mets see Gonzalez in the spring, realize he is done, and its just Smith with the backup plan "Bruce" But I guess if Gonzalez shows up in the spring I could see the Mets saying "well, lets roll with him until he sucks"

    Duda redo?

Gonzalez probably closes the door on Duda, but if you are an advocate for Smith that is probably a good thing because Gonzalez represents lesser competition/ less of a roadblock for him.
  18. he is already owed all that money by Atalanta - so this is a minimum salary move by the Mets just like Reyes last year - it can't hurt to bring him to Spring Training under those circumstances and find out if he has anything left/if we really need his services.

    Duda redo?

I like Duda, but give Smith his shot. if Smith shits the bed, a guy like Duda is probably available via trade from someine wanting to salary dump in June, though.

    Duda redo?

if Duda will take one year i'm fine signing him and planting Smith at AAA once Conforto is healthy, assuming nobody else gets hurt. but its the Mets. someone will be hurt.
  21. OOTP is indeed fun - it can also be complicated/frustrating if you dont want to invest time. i'd buy the new version if we had enough people here interested in some multiplayer leagues?

Either that or they're really down on /looking to trade Dom Smith. yeah, but if that were the case isn't Duda > Bruce if you KNOW you plan to play the guy at 1B almost exclusively?
