I like it because I feel 3/39 is a good value for a player of Bruce's caliber in the FA market and he provides us a fair upgrade somewhere, even if we don't exactly at whose expense the PAs will come yet. I like Nimmo too, as Edgy mentions, but for Nimmo to noy play often would mean a healthy Conforto and Cespedes, a performing Bruce, and a performing Smith. And Nikki can still face the lefties if any of the lefties above are showing again that they can't. That's a nice problem to have. I didn't want jd Martinez's awful defense on a long term deal. The only superior option to me was Cain. Yes, there are players I would rather have at 2b/3b/pitcher but this move doesn't in any way change those roster spots and I don't want to judge it based on Wilpons perceived budget. If the Mets "can't afford" Neil Walker or Alex Cobb because of this deal then I say "fuck Wilpon" not "fuck this deal"

HVAC Guy might have misheard "Harrison" though. Pittsburgh would have to include both for that to be remotely interesting. Are you doubting HVAC Guy? Maybe they do both, he's not sure on the configuration. My remark is Smith and McCutcheon both wear 22, so it's an efficiency play. Also I'm not terribly worried about the 5th outfielder I would assume a DeAza type will be gathered in by spring. I'm not worried about the 5th outfielder for the sake of having one, I just don't want to lose Nimmo in our long term plans unless there is a good trade return. I'm down on Lagares right now, but i want to carry a good defensive center fielder - i think the 5 (4 1/2 if Bruce is going to spend time at 1B) they have look good. still add a deaza type with a spring training invite
  3. and the media wasnt reporting shit til it was done. Sandy operates in silence! a good value at 13/yr i think!

Granderson got as high as 91 with the Mets in 2015. I guest the best current candidate is Nimmo. No way does Nimmo see the playing time. Conforto could get there if Cespedes gets hurt and they have no reason to pitch to him ever.

  6. this one is killing me, i have no clue where to even start
  7. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/22004988/jenrry-mejia-new-york-mets-agree-contract-formality-ban I assume the Wilpons are counting this, along with the portion of Wright's contract covered by insurance, towards the payroll limit.
  8. I always liked Plawecki, but I've been proven pretty wrong so far.
  9. This thread came back from nowhere, Lucroy - a recycled off-season name that does not excite me.
  10. First, I saw that of the 163 ballots recorded so far, the average number of players per ballot was 8.99. I was happily surprised by this, since we all know of the writers who provoke outrage by not voting. Then I got curious about who might be dragging down that average. I strongly suspect that the guys whose ballots are known ahead of time skew younger and tend to be more in the "more is merrier" camp. the ballots with one or two votes tend to not get published ahead of time. Bill Livingston of the Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com votes for just two players, Jim Thome and Omar Vizquel. seriously, strip this clown of his ballot.
  11. I really like the whack-job dominant reliever thing. Come in all juiced up with the bases loaded and strike out the side on eleven pitches (two just miss, getting squeezed by Blue) and the crowd goes wild!! Harvey = Rocker, you all see it!

Whether the range is acceptable is one thing, and breaking the bank for a top of the market FA is unlikely under this way of doing biz, I do believe it's true in a general sense that there's no hard ceiling, just hard sells. that's how I've understood it too. I've also heard it said that pretty much every GM has to run those huge signings past the owner. I'm trying to think who would be the 'break the bank' guy in terms of free agency this year. Darvish? He might be a hard sell with so many starters to deal with already. maybe there isn't one and Sandy is too smart to go sign us a Jason Bay. he'll patch holes and wait for Machado next year.
  13. I'm not saying it does, i'm just talking about what fans deserve
  14. Ceetar wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: not able to run it as it deserves. lol. it's their business. it's a business. they can run it anyway they want and _it_ and _us_ deserve literally nothing. They can run it the way they want, but I don't agree that the fans don't deserve better. MLB grants the Mets the sole (or in this case, dual with the Yankees) rights to a very large and potentially lucrative market. If the Mets current owners dont plan to do right by the fans, MLB should threaten to allow a team to move to Brooklyn or North Jersey, in the best interests of baseball. Not that we have necessarily reached that point. But MLB should be thinking of the fans happiness as being in the overall best interest of the game.

  16. yes, the Mets could use an elite bat. Hosmer is not an elite bat. Not even close. Among players whose primary position was first base last year, he ranked 11th in OPS+ (minimum 300 plate appearances) - 11th at the position in his career year! giving a contract like that to a guy like him is a franchise-killing move. If Smith isn't ready i would be very happy to see a Duda Reunion!
  17. Ashie62 wrote: A bit OT, but, If San Diego & KC can offer to pay Eric Hosmer 3 yrs or 7 yrs at about 20 million per year why are the Mets not involved. I see zero reason to go to a game this season as things stand now. They truly are the Amazin Mets. oye there are plenty of places to plant your flag on the 'Mets are cheap' narrative. I really don't feel Hosmer is one of them, he just isnt that good.
  18. I don't think either deal ends well, but Votto isnt just a guy, he's a perennial MVP candidate, the kind of player that makes you tell Dom Smith "have fun in Milwaukee" as you trade him for pitching. I'd happily see the Met take Votto now even if there is some 'dead money' coming at the end.
  19. Harvey only takes that offer if he knows something negative about his own health that we don't. I wouldn't offer it.
  20. It doesn't seem like a very wise deal for a rebuilding team to invest all that money especially in a first baseman which at the end of the day is going to be the easiest position to shove some guy you find later on with a bat and no glove into. pretty sure they'll regret this one.
  21. Use the Force Jason
  22. looking at the numbers, pre-Mets Jason Bay was a better player than i remembered - but Holliday was the better player and the Mets got burned by shopping at the discount store (if not the bargain bin as i initially remembered)
  23. Machado, if he hits the open market with his skills at that age, is the caliber of free agent you see once every 10 years or so. If the Mets dont make a very competitive offer I would say they fucked up. Wasnt Jason Bay widely considered the consolation prize/ clearly worse option after losing out on Holiday at the time? Or is that 20/20 hindsight?
  24. Yeah, when they sign Harper/Machado all will be forgiven. But when was the last time the Mets signed the top free agent? Beltran?

I thought Octavio Dotel would become the next Mariano Rivera. Saw Ventura's ball moving through the raindrops like a star. The moment Finley turned around with his head down and then it was all confetti and Gary Glitter. I have the unused WS ticket sheet. I was 16 and I've learned since growing up and having kids that sports will never be as meaningful to you again as they once were. 1999 will forever be my top Mets season. Damn you, Kenny Rogers.
