  2. what does Goins bring to the table that we don't already have in Matt Reynolds?
  3. I agree with Chad, i would rather not see guys who just sroppes off the ballot looked at again so soon. Perspectives do change, so I wouldn't say never either.
  4. Valadius wrote: If Bowie Kuhn and Bud Selig are Hall of Famers, then Marvin Miller should be too. You can't tell the story of baseball without him. He was a consequential figure. Neither belong in the hall in my opinion.
  5. Profar has pretty much never shown the talent he supposedly had. Harvey hasnt shown he is healthy enough to get back what he had. Given the difference in remaining years under control is rather take my chances on Profar today if that was truly an option 1 for 1.
  6. You guys have an inexplicable boner for a union rep. The hall is not "cheapened" in any way, shape, or form by the non-inclusion of someone who never swung the bat or threw the ball. The hall is arguably cheapened by the exclusions of Joe Jackson, Pete Rose, and the collective assumed steroid users. When I one day take my kid(s) to the hall, it may feel like something is missing when I don't see McGwire's name up there and wont be abke to tell them about the summer he was chasing the homerun record and I watched Turk Wendell come in and strike him out...twice in one day as part of a doubleheader. I wont give two shits about Miller not being there and I'd say the same about any other non-player.
  7. Cut Jeter some slack, how far are the winter meetings from Miami? He probably didn't have the range to get there in time.
  8. Frayed Knot wrote: But he only had an ERA that high because -- wait for it -- he pitched to the score. Or so his supporters claim. The first time I remember hearing that argument was (of course) from a Yankees fan. He was talking about David Wells. David Wells vs. Jack Morris career value is a good argument. that alone tells me Morris shouldn't be anywhere near a HOF conversation
  9. Edgy MD wrote: Wait, Roberto Hernandez? yeah i looked up the numbers and i am definitely confusing him with someone else, i'll withdraw that one.
  10. List of some pitchers not in the HOF that I'd put in the HOF ahead of Morris: Clemens, Schilling, Mussina, Gooden, Hershiser, Finley, Cone, Oswalt, Kevin Brown, Saberhagen, Santana, Holliday, Roberto Hernandez, Pettite* this is just off-the-top-of-my-head, so there is a strong recency bias. *gag
  11. Ceetar wrote: Also literally nothing he says matters or is to be taken seriously. which is as it should be. I'm glad Alderson isn't "pulling a Jeter" and telling everyone he NEEDS to trade away his best player. I responded to this post just to take a shot at Jeter.
  12. Buy High, Sell Low? Ok, you're right, they haven't actually shown a willingness to "buy" at all. Even if the Mets have decided they'd never give Harvey a long-term deal, I don't see how the return on him now is a better asset than the return you'd get in July if he rebounds, even if you "divide the value" of the 'July asset' by the chance of rebounding. happy to be proven wrong. if the Mets get a top 60 reliever (a guy who would be top 2 on an average bullpen) on a decent contract i'd accept that as a reasonable return.
  13. Expectations about the winter meetings, the Mets off-season, or the 2018 season? They are all related but not the same.
  14. Do compilers always make it through the veterans committee? Tony Perez didnt deserve it either. The biggest problem I have with Morris is that a dozen better pitchers arent in. He DRASTICALLY lowers the bar.
  15. If the Mets are serious about winning, Wright can't be part of 'Plan A' at this point. If he ever stays healthy, you figure out the playing time then.
  16. the Stanton contract is definitely more palatable to an AL team who knows they'll never need to suffer through horrible negative defensive value as long as the bat is producing - but the Yankees still had a roster built for this where a few years ago they wouldn't have because they have nobody else obviously "clogging" that spot long term.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: Nymr83 wrote: A similar player can he had on the free agent market for nothing but Wilpon's cash, ... Who's your man? Well, before I even get to the FA market, Flores is an equivalent hitter already under contract so maybe Wilpon's scarce resources should go elsewhere if this is the level of player they are looking at. But on the market, i'd be much happier to re-sign Neil Walker as compared to acquiring Castro for even a mediocre prospect.
  18. Centerfield wrote: Not a knock on you or Castro but this makes me want to hurl. MFY fans are jubilant that they got Stanton for nothing. Now we are hoping to dig through those scraps. Makes me sick. As for Castro, career 733 ops. Doesn’t walk. Middling power. Expensive. Costs players. Pass. Rather give it to Flores. If he were the best option for the Mets, the "Yankees castoff trash" angle shouldn't matter, but I agree with the rest. I have no interest in Castro because he isnt that good and would cost trade assets. A similar player can he had on the free agent market for nothing but Wilpon's cash, assuming you are steong enough to open his wallet with a crowbar.
  19. If the Dodgers made this deal I dont think we would be conplaining nearly as much. Starting from the premise that the Marlins wouldnt pay much if any salary, they got a reasonable return considering the no trade clause tying their hands - for all we know Stanton secretly gave them a list of 3 teams or less! The issues here are really 1) an ownership group being allowed to buy a team when they seemingly couldn't afford to run one 2) the impression of dirty dealing and 3) another demonstration of the Yankees willingness to spend in a way the Mets won't. I dont think the quality of the trade itself is an issue. The idea of Judge for Stanton is a joke, no team in the league trades away a guy like Judge under team control cheaply for 5 or 6 years.
  20. ESPN reports Ohtani to the Angels! glad its not the Yankees or an NL team. excited to see if this guy can really pitch AND hit well.
  21. Centerfield wrote: This is a great deal since it means he will not be a Met. Exactly. The only downside is he won't be available against us. Oh and he dominated the Phillies but got killed by the Nationals
  22. 1) Seth Beer, 1b: He earns his top spot by living up to his name, offsetting his awesome walk and slugging rates with a 20 (!) run tool, and predictions from scouts that he'll be a full-time DH by his 25th birthday. If we're willing to sign Tebow just for jersey sales we should really be taking a hard look at this guy. I'd buy one.
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Interesting that a guy with a name that's very similar to that of the guy who sailed in 1492 will be playing for a team with a Native American themed name. Rather than being interesting, this observation reinforces CF's point that the "hot stove is slow"
  24. I totally forgot he was murdered until I just googled him
  25. Is the answer going to be someone Jeter like (ie they never made an error because they didn't have the range to get to the ball)?
