  1. ="batmagadanleadoff"]="KC"]bml: But then again, the Mets could keep on getting dicked again without instant replay. Maybe even more so than any other team, from here on out<<< That got old around here about five years ago. Well, I wasn't here five years ago, so I can't put my two cents into that one, one way or the other. I don't see the introduction of replay in mid-season as being problematic, mainly because the policy has no effect on the way the game is played. If, for example, MLB decided in mid-season, that all runs scored on Home Runs would count twice as much, so that a solo Hr would be worth two runs and a Grand Slam eight runs, I could see the unfairness. Teams could justifiably complain that the new policy favors home run hitting teams, and that the policy is unfair to teams that were built primarily around speed or fielding. Teams can't reasonably adapt to the new rule change in midseason and on a few days or weeks notice. But this instant replay has no effect on the actual play of the game; rather, it essentially affects the observation of the way the game is played, and nothing more. It would be as if MLB discovered a colony of Supermen with superhuman, infallible eye-vision to replace the regular old human umpires in midseason. Where's the unfairness to the game? one could argue that the teams knew the tendancies of the umpires and a mass replacement mid-season (or installing Questec midseason) is unfair to some teams as well (like, say, a braves team that relies on calls 6 inches off the plate that they know they have been getting.)

I see it as one more cop on the beat enforcing the same rules. oh theres no question that this wouldnt be on the same level as changing a more substantive rule but i still dont like this stuff in the middle of the season. i'm sure there will be a new set of problems and complaints (maybe even arguments over who has to decide what and who can demand replay and when) and i'd rather that starter in spring training than in the playoffs
  3. an infield hit for Church, and Schneider smacks one out of the yard!
  4. send Argenis down.
  5. Welcome Back!!!
  6. ]Because you play a full season with one set of rules. I guess it's me, but I see it the same as playing with three or five umpires the rest of the way. Hell, four fouls 'n yer out. The chalk is foul and the so are the poles. i agree that you should play a season (and i'd say that includes that season's playoffs) with one set of rules.
  7. i wouldnt introduce it in the postseason either. use it in the AFL and then start using it next march for spring training games.
  8. nice W, pedro went further than i expected, i'm glad they brought him back out after the 3-run inning which i wasnt sure they would.
  9. come on jose. i'd send chavez here.
  10. this thread didn't go too well last summer/fall. i'll begin counting the magic number when its at zero.
  11. ="KC"]ny83: stupid slow loading server<<< The server works fine ... it's the best we've ever had by far. it didnt have to be your server, it could very well have been verizon's on my end, nonetheless something was causing it to load slow, and it wasnt just me, someone triple-posted in another thread around the same time
  12. shove pitch count up your ass as Pelfrey throws 108 and goes the whole way. thats 2 recent games now where the bullpen has had the day off, 3 if you count Maine's start being finished by 4 innings of Brian Stokes. lets see if the rest does them any good, i think it will.
  13. double-post, stupid slow loading server
  14. Volquez is 3 years younger and pitching very well despite being in a hitter's paradise. Hamilton is also in a hitter's paradise and has disgusting splits this year (home: .340/.407/.634) (away: .263/.326/.454) i don't think the Reds should regret this trade.
  15. i made the same mistake in an auction keeper league, either one was mine for this year and next for under $10, i spent my money on Cueto.
  16. ]The Reds say they have signed most of their draft picks, including top choice Yonder Alonso from the University of Miami, and other promising young players to go with current young players Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Johnny Cueto. Johnny Cueto 8-12, 4.74 Edison Volquez 15-5, 2.73... nah, we don't need to mention him.
  17. it wasn't willie's fault, and it's not jerry's, that the bullpen has so many guys who are ineffective against righties/lefties to the point that you want to pull them against that particular type of batter. its been my experience from past Met/Yankee bullpens (and i dont remember other teams rosters all that well over the past 5-10 years offhand to comment on them without research) that you usually have 1 "lefty specialist" if that and the guys you bring in to face big righties are the type of guys, like an effective heilman, who you can leave in for lefties too. now even thouhg its not the manager's fault he needs to manage the team he's got. to me that means the starters need to be pushed deeper into the games and you sometimes have to leave a schoenweis or a smith in to face the "wrong" handed batter if that batter isn't a very good one. i feel willie did a better job of the latter, but manuel has done a (somewhat) better job of pushing the starters. i would have said "much" better until the past two weeks when both Pelfrey and Maine were pulled from a start in which they looked good (better than good in pelfrey's case, maybe just o.k. in maine's.)
  18. from Gwreck's 1B FA list... Carlos Delgado * NYM (36 years old, 117 OPS+ this year, 103 last year.) you know what you're getting with him and thats an (at this point) average hitter with an average glove. he has the benefit of being under the Met' control for next year without having to worry about being tied to a multi-year deal. Rich Aurilia SF (36yo, 90 OPS+, 73 last year) he's old. he sucks, and he's either injury prone or gets benched alot because his games played the last 5 years starting with this year are: 110, 99, 122, 114, & 124. he's Moises Alou without the bat. Ben Broussard TEX (31, 33, 96) decent but not good numbers in the minors this year, good glove from what i remember, has done nothing with his limited playing time in the big leagues this year. Nomar Garciaparra LAD (34, 103, 78) can't stay healthy or hit much anymore Jason Giambi * NYY (37, 139, 108) steroids. yankeeness. pass. Wes Helms PHI (32, 80, 68) has never really been a fulltime player and shouldn't be one now. Kevin Millar BAL (36, 101, 106) consistently average, like aurilia he either gets benched or hurt alot because he doesnt play full seasons. Richie Sexson NYY (33, 90, 84) only a couple of years removed from success, but wow has the fall been steep. dfa'd by the yankees. Mark Teixeira LAA (28, 145, 150) Boras wants an Arod contract. Frank Thomas OAK (40, 102, 125) hof lock, but his skills are starting to slip. should retire with 500 homers and a .419 career OBP and 19th on the career OPS+ list Jim Thome CWS (37, 127, 150) worrisome downward trends in several categories. better than delgado but a good bet to suffer a delgado-like downturn in '09 or '10. Daryle Ward CHC (33, 94, 144) decent hitter, not sure how he'd work out fulltime though. looking at these options it might be safest to exercise delgado's option (a decision that i'm assuming has to be made before the mets can even speak to texiera) i dont think its worth letting delgado walk and then if we dontget texiera having to negotiate with him along with everyone else and likely getting stuck with a 2-3 year deal or an expensive buyout on an option.
  19. ="KC"]I'm not so sure the losses are based on adherence on pitch counts. And if you don't like seeing relief pitchers pitching inning to inning in certain slots you might as well stop watching baseball. Every team does it. which doesnt make it the right thing to do, especially for a team that has two guys that the manager treats as left-handed specialists and one guy he treats as a right-handed specialist. when you use three pitchers in one inning so often you NEED to have guys who will go multiple innings in relief and/or starters going deeper into games, particularly when they aren't even pitching poorly.
  20. How many more games do you want to lose based on adherence to pitch counts? If a guy is pitching well keep him in the game. End of story. And that applies to relievers as well, I'm sick of seeing a good reliever throw a 15-pitch perfect inning and get pulled for the next inning.
  21. Well first I have to say that theres no way I end Maine's outing after 5 scoreless innings, even though he had walked 4 batters. But if I'm going to do it, I think Stokes is the guy to turn to there. Especially if Manuel planned on continuing to bring in multiple relievers in every 8th and 9th inning.
  22. good.
  23. i voted "like it" my thoughts are in the other thread
  24. Ayala was very good before this year although there are plenty of warning signs that he isnt what he used to be. he missed all of 2006 (i think he was the one guy who sufferd a serious injury in the WBC) and since then has only gotten 63% of his pitches in for strikes (67% the previous two years) and has seen an even bigger dropoff in first pitch strikes, only 56% of his first pitches to a hitter are strikes. his whip has been climbing, and its been via the walk as he has walked 3.4 per 9 this year, after 2.5 last year and a very good 1.6 in his prior 2 years. he's allowed about a steady hit per inning his whole career. its a good move by omar, but we'll have to see if ayala can reverse these disturbing trends.
  25. nice job by santana, go 9 and make sure the bullpen cant blow another win for you.
