Oh for fuck's sake.

Jeurys Familia, an All-Star pitcher for the New York Mets who was featured in a new ad campaign for an anti-domestic violence organization, was arrested on a domestic violence charge this week, according to a complaint filed by authorities in Fort Lee municipal court.

Police said in the complaint that Familia caused “bodily injury to another” and that they observed a scratch to the chest and a bruise to the right cheek of the victim, whose name was redacted in the court papers provided to The Record on Tuesday.

“The matter was brought to our attention and we are monitoring the situation,” the Mets said in a brief statement on Tuesday.

Familia, 27, who is identified in the complaint as Jeurys F. Mojica, was charged with simple assault, a disorderly persons offense, according to the complaint. A Facebook page that appears to belong to Familia uses the name Jeurys Familia Mojica to identify him. The date of birth on the complaint matches the date of birth given for Familia on the Mets' website.

The alleged incident took place in Fort Lee on Monday, according to the complaint. Fort Lee Police Chief Keith Bendul had declined to provide details on Monday when he was asked about the alleged incident, saying only that police officers had responded to an apartment on Park Avenue at 2:22 a.m. Monday morning after being called about “a dispute.” He did not identify the parties involved or specify whether charges had been filed.

The complaint had not been filed with the judiciary by the time the court closed on Monday but was available on Tuesday. Police officers said in the complaint that they found probable cause “to believe that domestic violence had occurred.”

Familia was living with his wife, Bianca, and their 1-year-old son, Jeurys Jr., in a Fort Lee apartment, according to previously published reports. He was the Mets’ top relief pitcher and a member of the National League All-Star team this year, and was part of an ad campaign that began last month featuring local professional sports celebrities condemning domestic violence.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Familia spoke in Spanish on the video, saying he was a fan of baseball and of the Mets, and adding: “I am not a fan of domestic violence.”

The campaign is sponsored by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and includes videos by New York Yankees manager Joe Giardi, New York Liberty center Kiah Stokes and former city sports stars John Starks of the Knicks and Rod Gilbert of the Rangers. New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito helped to coordinate the campaign.

He was the star of the Mets relief pitching staff, and was the team’s closer, typically inserted at the end of games to maintain slim leads. He famously pitched on the day his son was born in 2015, helping the Mets to hold onto a lead against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field in New York.

While he was selected to be on the National League All-Star team roster this year, he did not pitch in the All-Star game. Last month, he gave up a three-run home run to Conor Gillaspie in the ninth inning to take the loss in a 3-0 Wild Card Game loss to the Giants.

Truly "ah, fuck" territory.

I hope the alleged victim is doing as well as can be expected.

Well fuck. Hope the victim is ok physically and mentally.

I'll hold judgment until details emerge, but you know, sounds like he's being a dickhead.

It's the Jose Reyes thing all over again. You really don't know these guys that we think we know.

In Familia's case, I don't even feel like I had the illusion that I knew him well. I'm still not even sure how to pronounce his name! But yeah, this sucks. If the talk is just of a "scratch" hopefully nobody was hurt too badly.

And brace yourself for the onslaught of calls for the Mets to sign Kenley Jansen.

I didn't even know he had an alternate last name of Mojica!

Mind boggling.

I mean how stupid. Just shaking my head.

It doesn't explicitly state that the victim is female. Can we still hold out hope that the victim is some douchebag male cousin?

On the baseball side, there has to be some suspension coming up now right? I wonder if this will affect how Sandy approaches the bullpen.

If I learned anything from To Kill a Mockingbird, its that a bruise on the victim's right cheek means the assailant led with his left.

Well, I guess he can sign Aroldis Chapman!

As I said above, I think there will be public discussion (and a lot of it) about Kenley Jansen. But the less expensive route would be to have Addison Reed be the closer. My guess is that if Familia is suspended it will be 30 games. This sounds (so far anyway) like a less severe attack than what happened with Reyes in Hawaii.

Yeah, that too! That came out of nowhere!

The whole which side of the family's name to use thing seems to be a bit of a optional and fluid thing with some of the Caribbean/Spanish players.
Often the original/alternative is listed on their BB-Ref page but not in Familia's case.

I was shaking my head just like you CF when I posted that pic.
Conflicting reports coming out now.

Sure, but then you need someone to replace Reed.

I expect he'll be back by around May 1. Or he may not miss any time at all, if this really does turn out to be a hoax. (Which is a little hard to imagine. Is there a Jeurys Familia impersonator going around punching cheeks and scratching chests?)

Maybe it's the same guy who dressed like Mejia and juiced!

Seriously though, who is Hector Gomez? And it sounds far-fetched that this could be a false rumor. There is a police report and the Mets have acknowledged it.

Domestic abuse is an "automatic arrest" situation. If the police respond to a report, and see evidence, no amount of reasoning and explanation from the alleged perp and alleged victim will allow them to avoid making an arrest. So there may well be an arrest, police report, acknowledgement, even if the circumstances aren't what they appear.

I'm not, to be sure, claiming that, but it's certainly plausible.

I'm always too late to these threads.
Please add my "Oh for fuck's sake" to the collection.

That's in case Familia is reading this.

Francisco Rodriguez is the first Met bullpenner to have a domestic issue. In the locker room I believe. He skated.

that was before the Ray Rice video brought national attention to domestic abuse in sports. suspension coming.

Armando Benitez also turned himself on a domestic assault case. The charge was eventually dropped.

And I'm SURE Benitez is neither the first Met or first Met reliever to have such an issue.
