batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 It was once a foregone conclusion that David Wright would one day own the Mets HR franchise record -- a formality -- another achievement in the illustrious career of the Mets greatest home grown hitter. The Captain averaged over 20 HR's a year over his first 10 seasons and by age 30, had closed to within 30 HR's of Darryl Strawbery's all-time Mets mark of 252. Now battling spinal stenosis, a degenerative and progressive condition that has limited his PT and his HR prowess, Wright has hit but 20 HR's over his last three seasons combined. Now facing more uncertainty over a herniated disk in his neck, today's poll questions is ... will Wright break Strawberry's franchise HR record?[fimg=1111:2r5yjddw]https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7200/27328008431_e01790fcaf_o.jpg[/fimg:2r5yjddw][fimg=333:2r5yjddw]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2015/Topps-Eclipsing-History/EH-10/Darryl-Strawberry-David-Wright.jpg?id=ffe531d3-e723-4a0b-b084-fd8633adf43e&size=zoom[/fimg:2r5yjddw][fimg=333:2r5yjddw]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2014/Topps-Chrome-1989-Topps-Design/89TC-DW/David-Wright.jpg?id=978afcc4-9e50-4a9c-82fc-fd5fb627dcc0&size=zoom[/fimg:2r5yjddw][fimg=333:2r5yjddw]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2008/Topps-Finest-Topps-Team-Favorites-Dual/DTF-RW/Jose-Reyes-David-Wright.jpg?id=8ddc4258-0980-46a5-bdab-3faf15da3e87&size=zoom[/fimg:2r5yjddw][fimg=444:2r5yjddw]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2007/Topps-Heritage/436/David-Wright-Ryan-Howard.jpg?id=7c983b40-13dd-456a-84d0-e3a9290c78f3&size=zoom[/fimg:2r5yjddw] [fimg=333:2r5yjddw]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2009/Topps-Heritage-New-Age-Performers/NAP1/David-Wright.jpg?id=77ceebf8-102f-4c85-8c96-b4855ba44c5e&size=zoom[/fimg:2r5yjddw][fimg=333:2r5yjddw]http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/2005/Donruss-Blue-Press-Proof/33/David-Wright.jpg?id=39515b31-211c-42a1-beb2-a34f26211bff&size=zoom[/fimg:2r5yjddw]
Guest d'Kong76 Guests Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 I took no, because I think this is his last season.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 We'll know a lot more in a day or so, but things tend to wind down, rather than abruptly stop, especially for a guy on a long-term deal, so I voted yea. He was hitting when the neck thing hit him, and that doesn't seem as career threatening as the stenoisis.Unless it is. Or unless they're somehow linked, like Columbo insinuates.

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 I voted no.I'm not getting too excited about his seven home runs so far this year. I'm guessing that General Custer killed some Native Americans during his last stand, but not enough to save him. I feel the same way about David reaching the record before he has to leave the game for good. Not enough.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 At least 99 documented Native American combatants were killed at Little Big Horn, not including the Native American scouts that US Calvary was using. So using that precedent, Wright should fly past Strawberry easy.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 (edited) Custard? I like custard! Huh? What? Yes, if just largely because he'll have a handful of years-under-contract to try... even if he limps across the finish line. Edited June 2, 2016 by Guest

It was a metaphor to say that I believe Wright is on his last stand. I know you knew that.As I posted (and voted) in another thread, I think this is his last year and he will retire at the end of this season.Later
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 He has 10 HRs to goHe has 4-2/3 seasons left on his contractHe hit three HRs in his most recent twelve at-batsWe don't even know if he needs to be DL'd at this point much less essentially moth-balled for the remainder of his career.Yeah, I think he'll get there.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 He'll get there. But not easily.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 This is a really good question. The obvious answer is "of course he will - he only needs ten." But I honestly don't know. And when you look at that dropoff, yikes. I'm voting yes, though.Either way, I'm reminded of Don Mattingly.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Sure, but Mattingly hung on for years and years playing a sub-optimal level. Pretty much 1990 to 1995.Of course, you can say that Wright already has half or more of those six years behind him, but not all of his drop off has been back-related.I'm happy to lay 100 sugarbucks on Wright capturing the record.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Me too. I think Wright gets this easy.In fact, I think he gets the record this year.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Definitely not looking too likely this year with the herniated disc in his neck. Just seems that too many injuries/health problems are piling up on Wright. I really like Wright, he is one of my favorite Mets, but I fear his time as a productive major leaguer is rapidly slipping away.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2016 Author Posted July 14, 2016 bumpWhen this poll first appeared, we knew little about Wright's neck disc problem.Any of you yesses wanna switch over to no?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Those who voted 'NO' -- or want to change to that now -- are essentially arguing that his career was/is over. He's 10 HRs away and, even in the post spinal stenosis diagnosis era, he's HR'd 11 times in 300 PA. That's more or less a half season's playing time for a guy who has four seasons after this one on his contract. It's always possible that he is indeed done, but I'd vote against it, and if he's not done he's going to get there.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Add in the DH and he might have years left.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Add in card flipping and he'd have decades.

I figgered there wouldn't be more than two.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I can't see a Dr. clearing David with spinal stenosis and a neck fusion. Heck, Wright is a step from being the bubble boy.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Alls I can say is that I hope with all my heart that he gets it done. It would be a fitting cap to his career.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I truly hope that David Wright can return and become the Mets career leader in home runs. However, I will be quite (pleasantly) surprised if that actually happens.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 At this point, not bloody likely.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 A few earlier posts in this thread said he needs ten. To clarify, he needs ten homers to tie, eleven to claim the record for his own.
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 He gets it-- I hope.Looking at that B-R page, he didn't earn a single vote for Rookie of the Year? Shit, even Kaz Matsui and Termel Sledge (!) got one each...http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_2004.shtml
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 He gets the eleven, all pinch hitting and DH'ing.I wish.
