Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Two-year extension, says Carig.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Geez, if I'm Terry I'm thinking about leaving. I'm old and this job is stressful. On the other hand - these guys could take me to the promised land rather quickly.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Not surprised. Not pleased.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Terry deserves to ride this wave of pitchers the next few years. Hopefully, he goes out on top.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Cutting back on bonehead pitching changes would be a smart step towards that goal.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I'll hold off on commenting until my anger dissipates a bit. I know that Terry did a great job overall, but the sting of his bonehead moves in the post-season, and most specifically the last 3 games is still too fresh in my mind. But as mentioned, no surprise at all. I mean, the guy won the pennant. We're lucky he didn't get 3 years.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I haven't been the biggest Terry fan over the years, but I'm more than OK with the two year deal.I think Terry has gotten better at managing each season. That's big for a manager since it seems like most of them like to be know-it-all experts that never evolve or learn on the job.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I've come around a little on Terry. Although I still get mad at him when our guys don't execute, day to day he rarely gets outmaneuvered by the other manager, and he has terrific goodwill with the media - I mean, they absolutely love him, and that helps to establish authority and continuity with our youngish team. I'd like to see the club get better at the little things now, and hope he's held accountable for that going forward.Given our success this year I suppose the only way he'd go would be of his own accord anyway, but did not think we'd see the prospect of him outlasting the front office guys, but now there's a chance he might.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I'd rather have him than Dusty Baker. I'm OK with the 2-year deal. It's all he wants anyway since he's talking about retiring after that. He's the manager of the National League champions; of course he's going to get an extension.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Any announcements with regard to the staff? I tend to think Geren is gone.Go ahead. Make Wally bench coach. I dare you.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 No surprise , the players play for him and he seems to leave them alone .....
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I'm fine with this. He took them to the World Series. Give him another shot with this group of guys. See what his encore is.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Coming up as he was on the final year of his contract (option year actually) the club was pretty much forced into doing something seeing as how allowing a pennant winning manager to enter the next season in full lame-duck status is probably the poorest option out there. That leaves either extending him or, in effect, firing him and the latter certainly isn't a good move pr-wise, particularly absent some outstanding candidate ready to take over.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Watching Terry manage a game is like watching a drunk go through an entire book of matches before he finally lights his cigarette with his last match. He gets the desired results, but sometimes it is painful watching him do it. He sure makes the IGTs interesting.Later

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 (edited) Likable enough to keep around and root for... but not so much on the strategic end. He gets in his way a little less than he used to... until things get froggy, in which case it's fucking Overmanagement Jamboree time. From a lineup construction/day-to-day standpoint, he's not bad, although the inability to manage platoons effectively is particularly infuriating. (And it'll really burn if we end up trying to replace YoYo's production on the cheap, as you might suspect.) Edited November 4, 2015 by Guest
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 If he makes it to the end of this two-year contract, he will have managed more Mets games than anyone in the club's history. (Never would have guess that when he was hired.) Two full seasons would put him at 1,134.Davey Johnson 1012Bobby Valentine 1003Terry Collins 810Passing Davey Johnson in wins is possible, but won't be easy. He'd have to average 101 wins over the next two years. (And how great would that be?)Davey Johnson 595Bobby Valentine 536Terry Collins 394Meanwhile, he's just about certain to become the losingest manager in Mets history. He'll probably pass Davey Johnson and Joe Torre in his first couple of weeks. (Hopefully not sooner than that.) It will take 52 losses to pass Bobby Valentine for the record. And if he avoids 52 losses in 2016, he'll certainly be invited back for 2017.Bobby Valentine 467Joe Torre 420Davey Johnson 417Terry Collins 416
