David vs. the Krane

Is there some way to let him know that maybe getting one of these hit to coincide when there are runners on base every once in a while would be OK too?

If somebody at the MTA was paying attention, they'd change the Flushing line to the 5 train next week.

Because that wouldn't confuse anybody.

It's getting some media attention. Although Kranepool's total is wrong, and I can do without that opening paragraph:

Wright nearing Kranepools Mets hit record
By DON BURKE

Posted: 1:41 AM, September 16, 2012

MLWAUKEE It is not exactly Derek Jeter chasing down Lou Gehrig to become the Yankees all-time hits leader. But as he closes in on becoming the Mets all-time leader in hits a perch he could reach this week reaching the milestone means a lot to David Wright.

The 29-year-old third baseman entered last nights game with the Brewers needing just seven hits to eclipse Ed Kranepools mark of 1,481 which has stood since 1979. Wright still needs seven hits after snapping his eight-game hitting streak by going 0-for-3 with a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts in the Mets 9-6 loss to the Brewers.

I hope I get there, he said. Obviously, it means a lot to me personally. You just blink and, all of sudden, you have however many hits it is. ... Its obviously very nice. But its difficult because of the difficult second half weve had.

Im proud of the fact Ive been able to stay healthy and be as consistent as I think I have for the last eight or nine years. Youre going to have some years, some weeks that are better than others. But I take a lot of pride in going out there and trying to prepare myself to play at a certain level.

Wright said he never envisioned leading the Mets or any major league team in anything.

I was probably as surprised as anybody at the little bit of success I had early, he said. It still feels like, at some point, somebodys going to pinch me and Im going to wake up. ... To make it and be in the big leagues eight or nine years ... it has been surreal.

Maybe, like Kranepool, all of Wrights hits will come in a Mets uniform. He can become a free agent following next season and the team holds a $16 million option for 2013. The sides are expected to begin discussions on a new deal once this season ends.

Wright said he thinks its important when a player can spend his entire career in one uniform.

After the season is over, Ill sit down with my family and, at some point, get my [agents] involved, he said. Its going to be a lot of factors not just contract figures. Obviously, theres a list Im going to make of whats important to me and maybe whats not so important.

Can the Mets gets six more hits this season? Can Wright get all of them?

Would really really rather not do this while the Mets were playing the stinkiest ball of Wright's career.

Six hits in a double-header sweep --- that might be nice.

i see it happening this weekend against the Marlins. Maybe Saturday, just before 4pm. [tea time]
A hard grounder past Reyes to drive in the winning run in the 9th.

You heard it here first, kids.

This actually happened: Picked out Ed Kranepool at Citi Field Wednesday night. He had gotten up from his seat and headed toward the Delta Romney 360 Club as David Wright was coming to bat in the sixth. David swung and hit a home run just after the Krane had flown out of sight.

Can he not bear to watch? (If so, that would make him like every Mets fan without a record on the line.)

I won't throw back a sudden burst of base hits, but I would love the record to be broken on Sunday, September 23 -- the 50th anniversary of Ed Kranepool's very first base hit.

As David approaches the record, I can't get a scene from Harvard Lampoon's Vacation out of my head. Its the one in which Chevy Chase sees the Grand Canyon, pauses for a second, shrugs his shoulders, then leaves to go elsewhere.
Will Wright do the same?

My god he's taking forever. Then again, it took Eddie parts of 18 seasons to get three more hits.

Another tight race.
Will he get it as a .300 hitter, or will he have dropped below .300 by then?

Not that I want him to slow down any, but it would be pretty cool to have Dickey's 20th and Wright's record breaking hit on the last home game of the season. Take away some of the bad taste from last year's final home game.

I don't even remember last year's final home game. I'm still stuck on the final home games from 2007 and 2008.

I'm assuming we're talking about The Shortstop Who Shall Not Be Named checking out early.

The game two years ago was worse.

Fuckin' Ollie....

From that same game, I still love this picture from right after Pelfrey came out of the game -
