Berthiume called it something like the most dramatic night in Tampa's history. I guess Boggs' 3000th hit didn't do it for him.

Someone's never been to Mons Venus' "A Christmas Carol."

Red Sox Nation in STUNNED, DISBELIEF!

They believe it. Sox "fans" gave up on the team weeks ago. Very reminiscent of how Mets "fans" turned on the team in 2007.

They are similar: Both teams made it hard for their fans to like them.

This team may never live this down.

Meantime what a run for Tampa. It takes 2 and Tampa was 17-10 in Sept.; 35 of last 55.

They deserve it.

A lot of swagger up there about the four major sports titles in seven years. I don't believe much in karma but this was ridiculous. Only the pre-2004 Red Sox could lose like this.

Most of the bandwagoners have no idea that the Red Sox went eight decades without a title and that the Patriots were a joke before Parcells. And the latter includes my ladyfriend who started watching in the Bledsoe years. Actually most Boston bandwagoners don't know anything before Brady. But this is the Red Sox type of day I grew up reading about in the papers.

The true fans are having Nam like flashbacks to 1986, 2003, 1978...

I can't get over this. When the rain delay in Baltimore started it was 7-0 Yankees and 3-2 Red sox.

The Rays had a 6 run eighth to get to 7-6.
The Rays got a 2 out, 2 strike homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie.
The Red Sox had first and third no out in the top ninth and couldn't score insurance.
The Yankees had a couple on base in two different innings in extras but couldn't score.
The Orioles had two out ( and I think none on) before double, double, single ties
and wins it in the bottom of the ninth.
Five minutes later the Rays win on a solo homer that practically grazed the top of the wall at the 315 foot mark hooking around the left field foul pole.

And this is after blowing a nine game lead in September.

"Hi, we're the 2007 Mets, and we've just blown our insurmountable lead as the Worst Collapsers Ever. We didn't even make the play-in game."

And they were down nine games when the first game in September was being played and were down 7-0 in the 8th inning of the last game.
That's just fucking absurd.

That explains why they held on to Capuano.

Carl Crawford still helping his old team. That ball shoulda been caught. He will be crucified all winter in Boston.

Amazing night. Un-fucking-real.

can I add. rays 2 out, 2 strike homer was by Dan Johnson who was sporting an average of .108. one home run, and 3 rbi's over 30 games this season (when he came to the plate).
talk about pressure and a gutsy call by Maddon. You entrust your season to this guy. the guy who could make the final out of the season and force you to spend all winter thinking "should i have just let Fuld hit?"

Holy crap. I hadn't thought of that at all. It's like the Mets season being on the line and Chin-lung Hu at the plate, while definsible choices like Angel Pagan or even Jason Pridie sit on the bench.

Except, Hu would have hit a comebacker to the mound.

Well, I'm trying to frame the situation before the at-bat. The high likelihood of a comebacker to the mound is what makes that call decision so brave and the payoff so redeeming.

But of course, Dan Johnson used to be a decent hitter, so...

Oh, here's a little something for the Connecticut tv sportscasters who give us 3-5 minutes of Red Sox coverage, 1-2 minutes of Yankee coverage, then don't even give the Mets score. One guy , the lead sports anchor on a major NBC affilliate in Connecticut, when asked by the news anchor for the score of the Mets game, said "Oh. Did they play? I'll have to get back to you later."
FUCK YOU!

Geez, be thankful something meaningful happened to knock out the Reyes nonstory.

Why was Rivera not pitching the ninth?

Because MLB failed to grant Girardi's request for 11 days between the end of the season and the first playoff game.

Going over to Facebook this morning made me want to barf. I can't belief the disgusting glee that the MFY-loving people I grew up with have over the Red Sox choking. Unbelievable.

It ain't love.

By the way, great job by the forum balancing four IGs into one T.

Exactly. So if Reyes should play all innings of the last game, so should Rivera pitch that 9th inning.

Oh, come on. That's their biggest rival. Of course they're going to be happy.

I was openly rooting for that Chinese team to beat up Georgetown.

that's total bullshit. The Yankees have every competitive reason to play their roster in a way that best prepares them for the post-season. If that means resting Rivera the last day of the season, then so be it. It is in NO WAY comparable to a guy deciding for himself to play or not play as a strategy to achieve an individual statistical goal unrelated to the team.

Really? I took no personal pleasure in the Braves' failures. The only team I particularly want them to fall to is the Mets. Over and over.

the nice thing about the red sox collapse, and to a lesser extent, the braves, is that its being called the biggest collapse in history. they're wrong, as neither was worse than 07, both playoff-odds-wise and games-up-with-games-left-wise. with 17 to go, the sox were only up by 4.5 games. the braves, whose collapse is being greatly undersold, were up by 6.5 games.
