All Star Stars

I kind of like it in theory, if not in execution. I think it's kind of cool when a player gets to wear a littlle something, like a soldier's medals decorating him for his accomplishments on an otherwise-uniform uniform. The two stars above the nameplates are pretty cool and subtle, but the stars on the hats are overkill. I could kind of see a future where a player gets a tiny embroidered star on his sleeve year-round for each All-Star seclection he's had, but then national telecasters would have long, lingering closeups of the shoulder of Derek Jeter (or some future analog of his) while broadcasters pant over his 12 stars when he really only deserved three or four, so I need to think on it some.

Anyhow, the Yankee All Stars aren't wearing the stars, but they are, naturally, marketing star-spangled nu Jeter Jerseys. I guess I sort of like it as a potential new tradition (dignity), but hate it as a merchandising angle (no dignity).

I do like the idea of the little stars on the uniforms, but not on the caps. When they put stuff on the caps it always looks awful. I'm thinking of the Citi Field patch from 2009 and the World Series logos. (Do they still do that?)

I like it in theory, but what's next? MVP patches? I think it could create a caste system of sorts on the field, which wouldn't be the best thing for a team sport. (and now i'm surprised the NBA doesn't do this)

I had noticed the stars on Beltran's cap in one of the L.A. games this week, but not the jersey. They're a bit garish on the hat methinks.

I'm guessing they're doing this just so they can sell special edition all star regular jerseys. They try selling the all star jerseys every year but I don't think a lot of people buy them (I've rarely seen an all star jersey in the stands). This is probably the all star jersey that they think will sell...


It's all in the merchandising.

I like the stars- it's a nice touch. The hats, no.

And I'm assuming this is just until the All-Star break. I would hope it wasn't for the rest of the year, because that'd be tacky.

I love the stars, and I love the idea of having them be cumulative on the uniform sleeve. That'd be really neat.

I like it - and it's OK with me if they stay on for the rest of the year.
MVP, CY, RoY acknowledgments would be cool too if they kept them equally small and tasteful.
It would be kind of MLB's version of the TdF's yellow jersey (also green, white, and polka-dot).

Yanx aren't/won't wear them I'm sure because, as usual, they feel as if they're above major league baseball rather than a part of it. Doesn't much matter anyway as Rivera is suddenly too injured to participate in next week's ASG just as he's been for what seems like the 24th time in a row for ASGs, WBCs, etc., even though he's not too injured to play in actual games. Jeter and/or ARod pulling out is only a matter of time.

You wouldn't notice too often, because they'd be small to the naked eye, but every once in a while, your vision would lock on a Beltran left sleeve that looked some'n' like this.

The Rookie of the Year Award is also called the Jackie Robinson Award so you could stitch in Jackie's handsome profile or something, but I think we're at the Jackie Robinson saturation point and then some.

I don't know if they still do, but a couple of years back the warmup gear of each player included the patches of past ASGs the player was selected to.

Y'know, the more I think about some of the above statements the more it reminds me of high school

Oh wait, you're not, well then you don't get the stars anyway. Nice to hear that you would have given up that 2009 MVP had you won it too; no reason to show up the non-Valuable teammates.

More players dropped out of the ASG game today, some with injuries, some with "injuries" and some because they started today. Since Selig insists that the game "count", then move it to Wednesday so the starting pitchers from Sunday can pitch.
