Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I mentioned in the PotM thread that Justin Turner looked to have a chance to become the best two in Mets history. Justin Turner! Still technically a rook and it only the first week in June. That's how sick and depraved the assignment of that number has been. It's sick. All Stars became embarassments in two. Journeymen journeyed on in two. Prospects became... well, they became Wayne Housie. All of them.So I ask you, gun to your head, with KISS in the background playing "Deuce," which player (no managers or coaches here, includding Valentine) made two shine the brightest in Mets history?*Thank you, MbtN.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Marvelous Marv still has a place in my heart.Anyone who votes for the guy they got for Nolan Ryan should be banned forever from all things Metly.Later
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 That won't happen.I mean sheesh, I love Doug Flynn. If he called me up right now and said, "Edgy, I need you," I'd drop everything and fly to his his side. Just to sit there and be. If he said, "Edgy, it's so good of you to be here... considering who I was traded for," I'd say, "Hush."That said, there seem to be three good candidates.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 My vote is for Mackey Sasser. But Justin Turner definitely has a chance to unseat him.I'm already starting to wonder who Justin's Rookie-of-the-Year competition will be.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I was kinda into Jose Oquendo back then.

TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Gun to my head with the choices above, I go with Turner for hope and lack of a better option.Bobby Valentine was the best two I've seen in a Mets uni, but I guess managers aren't being included.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 The face of the franchise before the arrival of the franchise's Franchise. Bad, but good bad.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Throneberry because of his semi-iconic status, but 2 is Bobby V for me.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 What other deuce made the cover of a book in a Mets uniform?
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 per fangraphs, mackey sasser is the most productive metly deuce at 2.9 WAR per his career in the number. next comes roy staiger at 1.9 WAR, then chuck hiller at 1.2 WAR, and finally justin turner at 1.0 WAR.it's certainly his number to take. but he's gotta wrest it from mackey
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 If I owned the Mets, this wouldn't even be a topic for discussion. I'da retired Marv's # a long time ago.[youtube:286iynnc]dY-ZtKpSkzE[/youtube:286iynnc]

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I picked Mackey. But I did hesitate once or twice before doing so.
Guest The Second Spitter Guests Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I never knew the Genius didn't wear 2 as a player. Huh.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 CPF Rankings has Sasser at 146th on the list just nudging out Elster at 150No one else after that is particularly closeTurner almost certainly could not catch either just via this season alone, but could put a sizable dent in their lead.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Marv over Mackey over Justin. Maybe next year for Justin.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I'm giving Elster a vote.A decent SS gets it over an erratic catcher, and while I understand the Marv love but it's almost entirely symbolic and a bit before my time to boot.I always thought the Elster shoulder injury and the subsequent parade of low-rent SS brought in to replace him was one of the under-reported factors of the post-'80s NYM collapse. He may not have developed into an All-Star, but a solid glove-man at that spot who could put up even average numbers is not so easy to find and s having one usually puts you a leg ahead of your competition. The Jeter article in the other thread, while fucking ridiculous in its steered-to conclusion, makes some of those same points.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Ah, but Elster was only a #2 for one year. So Elster only gets #2 credit... for one year.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote:Ah, but Elster was only a #2 for one year. So Elster only gets #2 credit... for one year. That's how I figured it as well.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Elster also barely played that year. If it was a career for Elster he would win.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Swear I've been mulling this since Saturday night in LF stands, Turner's 2 in my face (albeit from a distance). I've always thought two numbers above all others suck for ballplayers: 2 and 59. Seeing Turner in 2 brought that back from the days of Wayne Housie.Throenberry may have something 2 do with defining the number in my mind, and he deserves all the accolades (relatively speaking). But I ticked Turner here because Turner turns me on RIGHT NOW!
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Here's a little background on No. 2 Damon Buford I did a little while back:http://mbtn.net/six-degrees-damon-buford
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I had really hoped my calling out to "Demon" Buford would catch on in the latter stages of 1995. He'd steal bases -- be a base-stealing Demon -- and a legend would be born. That didn't seem to happen.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 I picked Turner as well. Most of these guys who wore #2 also played like it.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote:Ah, but Elster was only a #2 for one year. So Elster only gets #2 credit... for one year. Then forget everything I just said.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 You are then encouraged to change your vote. Two votes seperate first and third.
