bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 HOORAY! It happened way too late but it finally happened. Sandy has the nerve that Omar lacked. I just wish that they did it before ST began to avoid wasting any time on him. Good riddance.
Guest The Second Spitter Guests Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Whether Sandy will be so eager to wield the axe on one of his own signings remains to be seen. Although, with $18M flushed away in the last couple of days the bar is set pretty high (or should that be low?).
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 By Adam RubinOliver Perez was informed he was being released by the New York Mets on Monday morning, with the club eating his $12 million owed. The Mets also had eaten $6 million owed to Luis Castillo three days earlier. "When they told me, I almost knew what they were going to tell me," Perez said. "It's one of those times you don't feel great, but I don't want to quit. I think I've got more in my career." Perez indicated he believed he got a fair shot from the Mets' new regime. "I think they gave me an opportunity," he said. "They were fair with me when I came here. 'We're going to give you an opportunity to be a starter.' I didn't do anything great. They moved me to the bullpen trying to be a lefty specialist. And the last game, that was a real horrible job."

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Would expect noting less from the Puma, whenever I see "national nightmare" in a sport column I tend not to read on.

But to my mind, he's owed a ton of leeway, following the credibility bump that dead-on Luis Hernandez story bought him.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Interesting. This would kinda smell like old-school Pops Steinbrenner, no?Yankees people have discussed ollie as cheap sign. Initial read: cashman not that enthused. bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Perez to the Nationals. To my friends that root for my local team: "HA-HA!"

They'll either 'fix' him or he'll never make the majors. at least, you would have to assume. They're not handicapped by anything, he's not even going to be on the 40 man.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Yeah. The bigger HA HA should be directed at the team paying him the $12 million.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Just his being around them has a negative effect. My crazy Nats fan friend tweeted "Nooooo!"
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 He can hang and pitch with Chien Ming Wang down where ever Nats minor leaguers pitch.

I was in favor of the contract at the time and would do it again, probably.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I recall being quite chuffed for Ollie and his contract...

I never had any use for Trax before that (the human rain delay drove me crazy on the mound), but i gave him props for going down, working hard, and coming back stronger. Yes, Ollie had the right to say no. That didnt make it the right thing to do. Ollie can suck it.
Guest The Second Spitter Guests Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I certainly preferred Ollie over Derek Lowe -- but the size of his contract was perplexing as it appeared the market for him was non-existant, and that Omar was only bidding against himself (IIRC The only other team mentioned were the Orioles, but they're linked with every starting pitcher that goes on market).Like Castillo's contract, many fans saw it as a non-arm's length arrangement, which was why they turned on him so quickly when things went sour.
