Federal authorities have decided to indict Roger Clemens on charges of making false statements to Congress about his use of performance-enhancing drugs, according to two people briefed on the matter.

An announcement is expected later today.

The indictment comes nearly two and half years after Clemens and his former trainer Brian McNamee testified under oath at a hearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, directly contradicting each other about whether Clemens had used the banned substances.

The committee held the hearing in February 2008, just two months after McNamee first tied Clemens to the use of the substances in George J. Mitchells report on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. After Mitchell released the report, Clemens launched an attack on McNamee, saying he made up the allegations.

Federal authorities had McNamee cooperate with federal authorities in 2008 to avoid charging him with steroid distribution.

"The Big Bollox Clemens" is so much better a nickname than the Rocket.

Though not as good as Fresh Fish.

ESPN put one of their legal beagles on the air who had seen the indictment and he was using phrases like: 'extremely impressive legal document', and 'masterful work', and 'guaranteed jail time if they can make it stick'.

Looks like he will finally get to answer in court.
About time.

Honestly, I preferred baseball in the old days, when pitchers doctored the baseballs instead of themselves.

Can't wait to see him throw a gavel at the Judge and then say he thought it was a baseball.

As Phil Mushnick points out in his Friday column, the YES crew somehow couldn't find time during their usual 3+ hour telecast on Thursday afternoon to mention, much less discuss, the just handed-down Clemens indictment.
He didn't mention if WABC radio involved any version of Suzyn saying; "of all the dramatic things, Roger Clemens has just been serv ..."
I somehow doubt it.

I tend to wonder if the word 'Steroids' has ever been uttered on Yank-jazeera

Of course they mentioned it.

When the Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz had their names leaked from The List.

Interesting read here by Joel Sherman, who insinuates that Clemens' biggest punishment is being locked out of the game as a pariah.

Good for him, the fuck.

I suspect many great players think types such as Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds could not tolerate having players they considered clearly inferior beginning to outdo them due to illegal means. So they decided to restore the natural order by doing unnatural things.

I don't buy that though , it always sounds like an excuse. I think these guys would have taken the junk regardless , they probably thought they were untouchable.

The Snooze yesterday had some quotes from Marion Jones, she happened to be in town with her WNBA team, it's her road to redemption, , maybe we will see The big bollox Clemens in the WNBA soon.

And that will be the absolute proof that the steroids shrank his nuts down to nothingness.

I think it's very credible in Bonds' case. He was still great, but the league was catching up to him by cheating, and (the theory goes), he used their means to stay in his deserved place ahead of them.

In Clemens' case, though, he just began fading in his early thirities, and he started taking the juice in Canada to re-assert himself.
