Top Ten Rejected Lines That I Would Have Wasted the Moment Considering and Wisely Rejecting

10. "Everybody here's being polite and discrete, but we're all a little disappointed about how you've been packing the weight on."

9. "Walking around with an MLB Hall of Fame pin on your lapel? Really? REALLY?!"

8. "So, Fran Healy? What was deal with that guy?"

7. "Have you rented Bottle Shock? It's mostly disappointing, but I figured you might like it. And Rickman's always good."

6. "Mr. Seaver, you've just got to talk to your daughter for me. She's not even picking up the phone any more."

5. "Tim Lincecum's got a sweet arm, but he kinda looks like a dorkier Alan Ruck, amiright?"

4. "I heard the first thing they did was build your parking spot and then built the rest of the stadium around it."

3. "Check it out. Mr. Big Shot riding with the plebes. Rusty always gets to use the VIP elevator."

2. "Mr. Seaver, I figure that if anybody can explain Lost to me, you could."

1. "Hey, Tom Seaver! You want some blow?"

"Rain Delay card game"?

The Solos were there last night too, in covered promenade seats. The only brush with greatness (okay, semi-mediocre-ness) we had was that during the rain delay, "Pin Man" ran for cover and ended up in the seats behind us. He gave both of my kids pins. Cool.

Undeniable facts about Pin Man: Carries a rain slick to every game ("can't get the pins wet. They'll rust my jersey.") with a hood ("don't want to short the lighted pins on my cap"). Also had this to say: "Cow Bell Man just has to get a new cow bell. How can I replace my pins and jersey?"

None of those quotes were made up.

I congratulate Gwreck for having the wherewithal to utter anything more than heavy panting. Mrs. Fafif and I were in Excelsior/Caesars (so imperial!) when Tom was introduced to the crowd alongside the Veteran of the Game, a fellow Marine (Returning Vet being one of the really great things the Mets do throughout the season). We had a nice overhead view of the Franchise and were able to follow him visually out of the stands and into whatever tunnel Tom Seaver uses (a Terrific tunnel, no doubt). He's totally got his politician hat on in those situations, with his now familiar wave and point at the crowd, stopping to slap or shake a hand or two, but always hustling the hell out of there.

I wasn't anywhere near him and my breath was still taken away. In an elevator, not even in retrospect, could have I said anything coherent let alone witty to him. I'd probably still be in the elevator right now.

(I'd also be at a loss for words with Pinman, though probably for different reasons.)

Totally impressed with G's poise. I'd still be riding that elevator now trying to think of what to say, hoping/fearing all the while Seaver would get back on.

That was great Gwreck

During the game last night Keith made a smart ass remark about something, I think it was when they were talking about the last pitcher to hit his first two batters......Keith said something and Gary replied " and your channeling FXH "....big laughs ..

I assume that FXH would be Francis Xavier Healy.

I think Tom Seaver hangs out in elevators. My one and only encounter with him was on the elevator as well. He gave my son a high 5.

Not for nothing, but my son isn't even 5 years old yet, but check out this star-studded list of baseballers he has exchanged high 5's with:

Tom Seaver
Mr. Met
Darryl Strawberry
Derek Jeter (Jeter offered, my son refused)
Hideki Matsui

The ignored hi-five for Jeter is total awesomeness.

And I am still intrigued by this rain delay card game.

I'd also be scared to say Hi to Pin Man.

I tried the "ignore him, nothing to see here folks!" path. But then he dropped a pin (horrors!) under my kid's seat. Since the boy got it for him, it was pins for my kids!

If the forecast is bad, the single most important item -- after poncho/umbrella -- to bring to a game is the deck of cards.

We usually do 10-card gin rummy (just the 2 of us) but next time come find us and we'll get a game of Hearts or Hold'Em going. Last night we commandeered an otherwise unoccupied concession stand which doubled as a table and a place to sit.
