Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Misquoted, or backpedaling?Either way, I'm pretty sure what I'd do if I saw Batista strutting the runway in his stringy finest.

MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Just heard a replay of a Jeter interview after yesterday's game (on the Seth Everet Show on ESPN Radio). When asked about A-Rod homer, Jeter said (I paraphrase) " He has 600 homers and he's 35 years old. He'll be playing for another 15 years."Seth mentioned Jeter was taking a shot at the remaining 15 years on A-Rod's contract as well as the fact that Jeter will be looking for a long term deal from the Yankees after this season. What a little bitch. He couldn't even offer his teammate a sincere congratulation for a milestone feat.Later
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 The quote was "A lot of good things for him to come. He's got another 15 years. You never know how many he's going to hit." It strikes me as highly innocuous.

That's Jeter Code for, "ARod's not a true Yankee, like Paul O'Neill or Pettitte. Therefore, we'll tolerate his little milestone. But you wait to see what it's like when I start sniffing hit No. 3,000. "
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Is Rodriguez really going to play until he's 50?I'm hoping he breaks down in the next year or two.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 I guess I have become O'Conner, because I think 3,000 is going to be a going to be a junior high semi-formal compared to the media orgy when he makes a run at 4256. And I do think he'll make a run, and I do think he and the Yankees are already thinking about it.And, apparently, the Yankees give some fat bonuses for that sort of thing.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Jeter was taken out of context. Personally, I don't see a circus coming to town when and if Gayrod gets around HR and Hits records.

Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 From todays NYDailyNews:The Mets did not require their players to dress up for the getaway day yesterday, instituting a casual dress code instead. Still, Chris Carter arrived at Citizens Bank Park in sport coat and dress pants."There's is nothing casual about a pennant race," Carter said.

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 My kingdom for a picture of Carter in a tweed coat and tie next to Dickey in a t-shirt and flip-flops.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Jeff, you make one absolutely correct statement: good former players and managers don't automatically make good broadcasters or announcers. See Tim McCarver for further proof.Beyond that, when it comes down to Bobby Valentine's years of experience versus your...math... He's the one I want to talk baseball history and strategy with. And I don't think he'd use the conversation as an opportunity to plug his new book, either. Ow-witch.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 From Baseball Prospectus: "Theres no reason for me to get real excited about it because the chance of more than one of them making a major impact by the time my contract is up is pretty slim."Royals starter Zack Greinke on the young players acquired before the deadline by Royals general manager Dayton Moore. batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2010 Posted August 24, 2010 Jerry Manuel on Chris Carter and The Manipulative **********:This is what Jerry Manuel thinks of Jeff Francoeur:I think hes just an important part of the team and the makeup and the fabric of the team, Manuel said before the Mets hosted Florida on Tuesday at Citi Field. When hes going well, we seem to be able to win some games. This is what Jerry Manuel thinks of Chris Carter:We really feel his best role is to find an at-bat in the game, when kind of the game is in [the] balance, youve got a chance to choose him, Manuel said. I think thats kind of where he fits for us.The rest:So Francoeur will not lose his role as the starting right fielder. Carter will remain a pinch-hitter. Manuel used Carter in the cleanup spot last weekend. The Mets won both games.Yes, both games were against Pittsburgh. Yes, Carters arm is probably somewhat questionable, Manuel said. But Francoeur still retains a .209 batting average against right-handers. Manuel will stick with him. He believes Francoeurs approach has improved recently (not sure exactly when: Francoeur is in the midst of a 2-for-27 stretch).Weve seen some long at-bats, deep in the counts and those type of things, Manuel said. Hes hit some line drives in there. But hes a guy that, when hes right, we usually win, because he seems to be able to get that big hit for us.http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2010/08/jeff_francoeur_remains_in_star.html

I guess it makes sense.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 This is sort of running against the spirit of the quote thread, where we look for illuminating ones instead of spiritually debilitating ones. But really, Jerry Manuel's desire to hang himself with Francoeur is a thread in itself. They were discussing in the booth how important it was for Manuel to get Francoeur going because the team needs him, and I'm thinking, "It's late August --- long past time to be focused on getting people going and time to work with people as they are."What's just as depressing is the "manipulative **********" agenda. Please lighten up on it.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Is it too late to change the marketing slogan to "Catch the Rising Tide of Delusional Multi-Millionaires?""I want to be back here. I want to have a championship because I know the fans want it and I want it, too."-- Oliver Perez
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Some piss taker is OllieSpeaking of taking the piss....Omar"We're seven games out of the wild card and we're still in August, so we're trying to win," he said. "We feel like we're still in this hunt and we see the past couple years teams that have made runs and I feel we have a run in us. And we're trying to win all the games.edit for full quote
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 "I want to be back here. I want to have a championship because I know the fans want it and I want it, too." --Oliver PerezI'm a little confused. Was it the showing up for spring training fat and out of shape a few seasons ago or his refusal to consider a temporary demotion so he could work on mechanics and hopefully improve his pitching, that best conveys Ollie's consuming desire to win a championship?
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 We all want things, most have to be earned and worked for. I believe that part is lost on Ollie.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 well, to be fair to ollie, he only says that he wants there to be a championship here, with him here as well. he makes no claims towards wanting to contribute or work towards it himself. if the team wins the championship while he's here, he still gets the ring.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 Maybe he just really likes parades.
