Wow, clever uses of the term "A-Bomb." I imagine the Japanese love when the Americans are flip about that sort of thing.

I heard this on the radio this morning.
Sterling is just so fired up to go into his schtick that it's usually only coincidental if he also happens to call the game correctly

The only good thing about hearing Sterling's voice is that Suzyn Waldmann usually isn't talking at the same time.

how would that be any worse than the frequently used figure of speech "stepping on a land mine" with respect to people around the world who suffered from logn abandoned mine fields?

i dont mind criticizing sterling for being stupid and not at all clever with his hom run calls, but lets be fair here, i dont find it the slightest bit offensive.

The word "suck" called, it wishes to be disassociated permanently from John Sterling.[/quote:3puuwuy8]

i suppose it is insulting to said word to use it alongside Sterling's name so often.

I'm not familiar with any regular usage of the landmine metaphor.

I think I am being fair and I think such a usage is pretty shallow.

From NYDN:

Tuesday, June 16th 2009
FORT WORTH, Texas - Former major league outfielder Mel Hall is on trial on sexual assault charges, accused of repeated advances on a 12-year-old girl he coached on an elite basketball team a decade ago.

Hall's accuser, now 23, took the stand Monday in a Fort Worth courtroom. She said Hall engaged in sex acts with her in various places, including her home and Hall's apartment. Defense attorneys for the 48-year-old Hall were to present their case Tuesday.

Hall was arrested in 2007 by police in a Fort Worth suburb investigating allegations of sexual abuse. He faces up to life in prison on three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child.

Hall's 13-year major league career ended in 1996. He played for the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, Yankees and San Francisco Giants.

The woman testified that Hall first exposed himself to her and her younger brother at home, when their parents were away. The boy testified that he thought they were playing a game and never told his parents.

Hall's interaction with the girl progressed to inappropriate touching and him instructing her how to perform oral sex, she testified. She said he also showed her pornographic movies at an apartment Hall shared with his girlfriend and their infant son.

"I trusted him," the woman testified. "I honestly had no idea anything was inappropriate at the time. I looked up to him. I just thought this is how normal people act."

The investigation also involved a 14-year-old girl who played on the team. Hall faces charges in that case. A trial is pending.

Mel Hall, convict.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Former major league outfielder Mel Hall was found guilty Tuesday of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl he coached on an elite basketball team a decade ago.

A Tarrant County jury took about 90 minutes to convict the 48-year-old Hall on three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child.

The sentencing phase was to resume Wednesday after two witnesses testified Tuesday afternoon. Hall faces up to life in prison.

Hall's accuser, now 23, testified Monday that Hall engaged in sex acts with her in various places, including her home and Hall's apartment.

Hall was arrested in 2007 by police in a Fort Worth suburb investigating allegations of sexual abuse.

His 13-year major league career ended in 1996, two years before Hall met the girl's family at a basketball tournament. The girl's father asked for baseball tips for his son, but Hall's friendship with the family grew through basketball, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

Hall was impressed with the girl's talent and wanted to start a basketball team, according to testimony. Soon, he was giving the girl private lessons and stayed in the family home while he was apparently building a house in a nearby suburb.

The woman testified that Hall first exposed himself to her and her younger brother at home, when their parents were away. The boy testified that he thought they were playing a game and never told his parents.

Hall's interaction with the girl progressed to inappropriate touching and him showing her how to perform oral sex, she testified. She said he also showed her pornographic movies at an apartment Hall shared with his girlfriend and their infant son.

"I trusted him," the woman testified. "I honestly had no idea anything was inappropriate at the time. I looked up to him. I just thought this is how normal people act."

The investigation by North Richland Hills police also involved a 14-year-old girl who played on the team. Hall faces charges in that case. A trial is pending.

Hall hit .276 with 134 home runs and 620 RBIs in a career that included stints with the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants. He also played four years in Japan.

I'll put money on him being found dead before the year is out.

He's either going to kill himself or accidentally on-purpose OD on something.

Yeah, I don't think it's a case of class at this point. He's in a Catch 22. The best thing he can do to save his life is not drink. The only way he can see to cope with the horror of what he's done is to drink.

The world is filled with two types of people to him --- those who think he's a waste of protoplasm who should be spit on if acknowledged at all, and those he thinks see him that way.

Maybe not. It's a hell of a burden to carry around is all I'm saying.

Suit: Yankees force fans to sit for 'God Bless America'

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
2:21 PM EDT, April 15, 2009
A baseball fan says he was ejected from Yankee Stadium for leaving his seat to use the bathroom while "God Bless America" played.

Bradford Campeau-Laurion filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday against New York City and the Yankees.

The lawsuit contends he was made a victim of political and religious discrimination on Aug. 26.

It says two police officers who ejected him were enforcing a Yankees policy that keeps spectators in their seats during the song.

A spokeswoman says the city law office has no immediate comment. A Yankees representative did not immediately return a call

This case settled:
NYC paid out $10,000 to the plaintiff and $12,000 to the ACLU for plaintiff's attorney's fees.

Yankees signed a stipulation and order indicating they have no policy and no intention of instituting a policy for God Bless America re: movement of fans in the stadium that does not apply during the rest of the game.

Jeter building Tampa's biggest mansion

Rising like an aircraft carrier under construction, the future home of New York Yankees baseball star Derek Jeter is taking shape on Davis Islands. Designed with a whopping 30,875 square feet of space, the seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom waterfront home dwarfs nearby mansions and could end up the largest home in Hillsborough County. - Tampa Tribune

A top New York Yankees prospect is not who he claims to be, sources tell SI.com. Two weeks ago, the Yankees signed a shortstop purporting to be 16-year-old Damian Arredondo from the Dominican Republic to an $850,000 bonus. Now Major League Baseball's Department of Investigations has determined that Arredondo is not the player's real name and that he is older than 16.

The Yankees signed the player they thought was Arredondo on July 2, the first day that major league teams are permitted to sign international free agents as young as 16. The Yankees were impressed with the switch-hitter's strong arm and speed -- he reportedly ran a 60-yard-dash in 6.4 seconds.

According to a new Major League Baseball rule, a player found to have used a fraudulent identity cannot sign with another club for one year. Major League Baseball has recently increased its efforts to deter identity fraud in Latin America by hiring new investigators and dispatching other investigators from its New York City office to oversee the process.

In general, sources say that MLB will be working with authorities in the Dominican Republic to bring criminal charges against the orchestrators of fraud -- often the trainers and agents who stand to make large percentages of the prospects' signing bonuses.

Mark Newman, the Yankees Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations, says that he has not received official notification of the outcome of the Arredondo investigation. The Yankees did not lose any money on the prospect because his bonus was contingent on the outcome of the investigation. Newman expressed gratitude that the investigative process was swift, allowing the team time to continue searching for prospects among the pool of free agents who have not yet been signed.

Last week, the Yankees also signed Dominican catcher Gary Sanchez, for $3 million. According to his agent, Brian Mejia, Sanchez has already passed his investigation.

Re: Last night's game -- could you imagine the cacophony from talk-radio and other YLDBs if it were ARod to make the error which broke up Pettitte's perfect game w/2 outs in the 7th rather than temporary ARod replacement Jerry Hairston Jr.?

Pettitte went on to lose his no-hitter on the next batter anyway and the shut-out the following inning but of course THOSE could have/would have been blamed on ARod as well for breaking AP's concentration and making him work out of the stretch, etc, things we know his SS would never do.
