DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 SI is running a list of the best baseball players to wear specific numbers and it is a joke. For 17, they chose Dizzy Dean (fine) but for runners-up?: Mark Grace, with honorable mention to Lance Berkman, Vic Raschi, Todd Helton, Brandon Webb and BJ Surhoff. No love for Mex. The rest of the list is similarly flawed.http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0804/mlb.best.baseball.players.numbers.0-22/content.21.html
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 No need to wonder who # 2 is , no it's not Jimmie Foxx .Seaver is # 41.The whole thing is very cumbersome to look at.
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Author Posted May 5, 2008 Cumbersome, yes. But thems are some purty pictures. The powder blue Montreal unis are to die for...
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Agree , grerat pictures , would be nice if the whole thing was in thumbnail.
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Author Posted May 5, 2008 Rey-Rey is runner up for Zero. That's gotta count for something?

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Mets are all over # 50 , Matt Lawton , Sid Fernandez and Benny.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Maybe they figure since Hernandez only wore 17 with the Mets for just 5 years, and some change with the Indians, and actually wore 37 for a longer period of time (1977-6/15/1983), hence it really is a bigger deal on the local level.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 MATT LAWTON!?!? Are they fucking kidding?

But SI gave #35 to Rickey Henderson, even acknowledging that Rickey only wore that number at the beginning of his career. Dizzy Dean's a good choice. But no honorable mention of Keith? That ain't right. SI also gave #57 to Francisco Rodriguez over Johan Santana.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Awful. Hate to say it but the whole SI franchise is going the way of The Sporting News.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 It'll always have a share of the Maxim audience though.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 How could you confuse this with Maxim?
DocTee Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Author Posted May 5, 2008 Mex gets no love for 37 either: Dave Steib and Bill Lee.
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Dick Allen and Beltran both better than Munson.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 not to suckle at the yankee teat, but gibson over mattingly?
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Hernandez gets love from the reader reaction to this photo essay.
stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 Heh, but Benny does not based on this quote on a page suggesting Jamie Moyer for # 50]Matt Lawton with No. 50? Hello! Jamie Moyer is still playing and he's had two 20-win seasons! Not even a runner-up? Who is Benny Agbayani anyway?-free_Dickey
