NGB= Net games back, a team's total games back behind all teams in front of them.

It's a three-team race, in reality. The volume of intra-division play over the next three weeks should push one team out of the picture. A cold streak could prove disastrous, and a hot streak could make Septemeber about getting healthy.

Just treading water wouldn't be so bad either.

5-1-1 in series since the ASB. I'm actually fairly comfortable with those leads as they stand right now.

That being said, I think winning at least 2 against Atlanta is mandatory. Especially with our 3 best pitchers (Perez, Hernandez, and Maine) going. Note that with Maine's short outing on Saturday, they shifted the rotation to make sure they had the top 3 going.

Agreed. 2 out of 3 HAS to happen. A sweep would go a long way toward putting the Braves away in the NL East race.

Really, 1 out of 3 would still be okay. It would only allow the Braves to gain one game on the Mets.

I'd rather see the Mets gain a game than lose a game, of course, but the only way this series is disastrous for the Mets is if they lose all three.

Check out Manny Acta's troops, tying Florida for fourth.

Eat it, Bonds.

Philadelphia is currently on top of the the Braves-Phils see-saw battle for second, but five solid games out.

The sweep this weekend not only destroyed DC, but fried Florida, as they also lost three. Those two are buried but good, but they're still welcome to beat up on the Braves and Phillies.

Tampa Bay, with a tragic number of 13, is almost certain to be the first team eliminated.

Again.

Manny Acta's troops, after opening the season with predictions of 120 losses, have pulled out of the cellar.

Loria's fighting with and firing Joe Girardi is looking worse every day.

metirish - "Willis needs to get the hell outta there....and come to the Mets and meet a bunch of his old mates."

As long as we're dreaming here. If Willis wants to bring Miguel Cabrera along with him, to be a corner outfielder, I won't mind.

i think we'd be happy with him replacing a certain mr delgado at the appropriate moment.

Mets gain a game on everybody in the division except the Nats. Plus, they knock Los Angeles 3.5 back in the Wild Card race.

And... we have a 5-1 final in Colorado, the Rocks over the Nats.

The real winner today was San Diego, beating the Phils and opening up a four-game pad over them in the Wild Card race. This series is probably Philadelphia's best chance. Most every other Wild Card applicant --- Atlanta, Los Angeles, Milwaukee --- lost also. Colorado, at 4.5 games out, is the nearest winner.

Florida has won one of the last 11.

Braves are 7 games out, but even nicer is the fact that they have 8 more losses than the Mets (whereas, eventhough the Phils are also 7 games out, they have only lost 7 more games than the Mets...so eventhough both are back the same amount, IMO it's easier to win 1 more game than it is to lose 1 less)...

Sounds like a good thread topic to me.

The lead is starting to look comfortable. The Braves/Phillies aren't bad enough for the Mets to run away and hide like last August, but I sure like 7 games.

Didn't the '73 Mets come back from a larger deficit?

So did the '78 Yankees, '51 Giants, '14 Braves, '64 Cardinals (well them I don't know, but the Phillie collapse was so historic they need to be lumped in) ect, ect, ect.

There is no need to feed the panic jumpers' paranoia by bringing up historic comebacks/collapses when there is no real context of doing so.

It may be time to take a cue from Wally Backman and start growing some beards again.

Nats and Fish win. The two teams that matter... don't.

Atlanta is wobbly and we could land a real haymaker tomorrow.

The sweep has allowed the Mets to retake half of the ground lost to the Phils. They and the Braves are likely realistically paying more mind to the Wild Card race.

The Nats and Fish have matched each other win for win and loss for loss the last few days, but both have a chance to be eliminated before the week is out.

The Nats and their fans, at least have something to look forward to for the franchise.

What would that be? Other than stadium issues (they have a new one on the horizon, and the Fish don't--at least not in SoFla), I think hte Marlins have a much brighter future and core around which to build: Cabrera, HanRam, Uggla, D-Train, Jacobs, Willingham---

I think the two most identifiable Nats--Dmitri Young and Nick Johnson--play the same position!
