Damn.

If we had to go to extras, I think we would've seen Wright at SS anyway (with Gotay at 2nd, Newhan in LF and Gomez in RF.

We are Devo.

D-E-V-O.

In all fairness, pinch-hitting Wright for Green was ballsy and absolutely the right move. Fantastic. With that lineup, then the pinch-hitting in the 9th, it was Willie's "I'm not left-handed" moment.

its "ballsy" to sit a lefty against a lefty in favor of a right-handed batter who clobbers lefties and happens to be the face of your organization? i can't call that ballsy, its the correct move though.

I didn't see it but sounded on the radio that Newhan was nearly doubled off first when Castro lined out, having run on the pitch.

Had that happned we'd spend our late afternoon fighting over Willets "Omar failed to address the pitching" agenda instead of being all excited about Willie 's Lou Piniella buttreamery.

It was pretty close. The ball squirted out of the first baseman's glove, so the safe call was automatic. I think he would have been called safe anyway, but it WAS close.

Well the starting pitching is still an issue even if the offense bailed them out. Again.

holy crap!

You start the scrubs and still score 5 in the 9th to win it. It's games like this that make me think our team could be something special this year.

i guess it's always an issue. But when does it become less of an issue?

NL Starting Pitchers' ERA by Team

1 NY Mets 3.44

2 San Diego 3.58

3 LA Dodgers 3.68

4 Milwaukee 3.68

5 Chicago Cubs 3.68

6 Arizona 3.76

7 San Francisco 3.89

8 Atlanta 4.04

9 Cincinnati 4.05

10 Houston 4.16

11 Pittsburgh 4.35

12 Philadelphia 4.52

13 Florida 4.79

14 Washington 4.83

15 Colorado 4.96

16 Your National League Champion St. Louis Cardinals 5.08

I applaud the Mets starting pitching and the men and women who assembled it.

the throw was online, but it was a short hop going to the 1bman. it bounced and went off his chest. if he caught it off the hop, it would've been close, but newhan still had it beat.
if he stretched it out, and tried to catch it before the hop (tough play with a throw from OF), he might've been out.

Chris Russo right now is ripping Piniella, apparently the entire team isnt talking to the media right now and they have no clip of him to play

it's not that they're not talking with the media just today, but they don't talk to media on any road game....

Yeah, and what they have to say is rarely of much interest anyway.

Chris Russo is a guy who's making big money, and he thinks we want to complain about how difficult his job is.

I really don't care to hear media guys talking about how athletes don't cater to the media guys.

they got some Lou audio on the fan.

it's chicago stations that don't broadcast any cubbie stuff after roadgames.

Went to today's game on a whim.

Best whim ever.

Sat in mezz behind home plate, listless eight innings and decided to leave after eight. I mean leave those seats. I wanted to reposition in right to bolt for the ramp ahead of the murderous foot traffic to the 7. But I couldn't bring myself to leave altogether. So I decide to linger in the tunnel leading to section 25. Newhan gets on. I grab a seat in the first row.

And I sit and lean forward and listen to Howie and Tom and watch and notice Cubs fans in fair territory in LF mezz holding up a W flag, replica of what they fly at Wrigley on exceedingly rare occasions. And as Newhan scampers back to first (I thought that was going to be a DP) and as Gomez singles and as Beltran walks and as Chavez walks and as Gotay (GOTAY? NO WRIGHT? WILLIE!) singles (WILLIE'S A GENIUS!) and as Eyre comes in and Wright PHs for Green and Wright singles (WILLIE'S A NOBEL LAUREATE!) and Delgado, who sucked all day and earned every boo he got (if you're into that sort of thing), those Cubs fans gamely stood their ground, flying their W flag.

Then Delgado rips a single and I jump up and am slapping every hand that will have mine and I'm yelling "OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! HAVE YOU EVER? HAVE YOU EVER?" My mouth remained agape clear to Woodside.

I lost track of the W flag though.

You live for something like this, I swear you do.

Went to this game with a bunch of people from work. As we were going to the bottom of the ninth some of the people were saying this was the most boring game EVER and we should really be seeing the MFYs. Um, they took that back. Amazin'.

I felt like the Jimmy Fallon character in 'Fever Pitch' today.

In my office listening to the game. In the 4th inning (around 2:30 I guess) I decide I'm going to play hooky the rest of the day and get some 'me time'. I go over to J&R and do a little home electronics browsing then I cruise uptown and do a little breeze through Nike Town and check out the Sony store on Madison.

Got a haircut, browsed a few bookstores, blah, blah, blah. Checked the Blackberry to see how the Mets did. I see a 6-5 final. Cool, 3 of 4 from the Cubs.

Then my phone rings. My bro-in-law was at the game and gave me the whole 4-1-1 on the rest of the game from the 4th inning on.

If I'd have stayed in the office I would've experienced the whole kit n' kaboodle from Howie & Tom.

Serves my ass right. 'Me time', sheesh.

Just watched the game online since I missed it at work.

Great game...this team showed me something special today.

Willie on the FAN re: Eyre "Green told me the day before 'I just can't hit this guy'. So I had Wright there and I used him."

CPF wrote:

gotay is hitting! willie is a fucking idiot!

Gotay is not going to hit right?

Gotay gets the hit. Holy ass, Willie's backward logic works again.

Maybe, just maybe, Willie knows his team better than a bunch of bums on the internet.

PS: I wanted Wright for Gotay, not Green, too.

I like Paul Lo Duca's batting approach. I defend his skillz. But --- and I came to this realization slower than Willie ---- Paul Lo Duca is exactly the guy I don't want up there with DP force outs all over the place and available outs dwindling.

Gotay. Took. Cajones.

Guy was at 4-22 .181 coming to the plate. Cajones.
