Was this the sweepiest sweep the Mets have ever laid on St. Louis?

This was a complete ass-wiping, bitch-slapping, humiliation. The Mets did e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g better than the Cardinals did in this series, dramatically so in most cases.

When the Mets started 0-5 a few years back it was distressing and sad but it wasn't hopeless. They were having some bad luck and made a few mistakes and got going slowly, but it wasn't ever like this. If I'm a Cardinals fan right now I'd be furious.

Well there was that mid-April '86 ass-kicking that wound up putting the defending NL champs in the rearview for good.

Yes, the 1978 juggernaut. I remember a wire service story with the headline "Mets Insisting They're for Real." They were 9-6 at the time. They lost their next six, and I guess they stopped insisting. The head cheerleader in the story was Bobby Valentine.

Le'ts find that story, Sherman!

I remember the Daily News lead that day said something like, "The first place Mets. Roll that around on your tongue for a while..."

And the article had a quote from Ron Hodges, though I don't remember what he said.

It's funny that I remember that after all these years. Seeing the Mets in first place after 15 games must have made quite an impression on my 14-year-old self.

Here are the standings at the conclusion of play on April 22, 1978:

NEW YORK METS96.600--W-15-5

I use to clip the standings after Opening Days in the '70s and save them just so I could remember what it looked like to see the Mets in first place.

I hope that this becomes a very long, multi-paged thread.

The Mets are the last undefeated team in the NL, Twinkies are the only 3-0 team in the AL, their game got postponned last night in Chicago.

On the flip side, only the Astros at 0-4 are looking for their first regular season win of 2007.

So we now have a one-game sweep, a two-game sweep, and a three-game sweep.

When's the next four-game series? I want the Mets to sweep for the cycle! (I wonder if they've ever done that?)

Will this thread contain details in the unlikely event the Mets are ever swept?

This was the Mets first sweep in Miami since Oct. 1-3, 1993, the last three games of the Marlins' inaugural year.

Sweep Five: vs. Athletics, June 22-24, Introduces the New ImprovedCPF Sweep Summary BoxTM
This A's sweep replaces the season opening sweep of the Cardinals as the most dominating sweep of the Mets' season. (Old Sweeps have been updated in this thread with new SSPs.)

RA:3Mets Lead: Some referred to it as a sweep. Others used pluralized phrasing; the Mets had won three games -- and in succession, no less, they said. No matter how they cut or phrased it on Sunday afternoon, the Mets left Shea Stadium with three more victories and no more losses than they had when they showed up for work on Friday. Here on the very turf the New York Jets used to defend, the Mets had hung a three-and-out on the enemy.A's Lead: With Rich Harden's return to the A's starting rotation at least visible on the horizon, it's reasonable to think that the starting jobs of Joe Kennedy and Lenny DiNardo may be on shaky ground.

Neither Kennedy on Sunday nor DiNardo on Friday did himself proud as the losing pitcher in two of the A's three losses to the Mets, who became the first team in the last 46 series of three or more games to complete a sweep of Oakland

RA:8Mets Lead: The schedule says the Mets must go back to New York right now, but if they had their way they might just stay on the road for a while.

Baseball's best road team* completed a three-game sweep of the Nationals with an 8-2 win on Sunday. The road trip ends with a 5-1 record, and the standings reflect that New York has pulled away in the National League East, holding a five-game lead over Philadelphia.

"It was a great road trip for us," first baseman Shawn Green said. "We're putting ourselves in much better position as we get closer to September."

* Hell, yeah!
Nats Lead: Before Sunday's game against the Mets, Nationals manager Manny Acta said reliever Jesus Colome would be a welcome addition to the team because it would give right-hander Saul Rivera and Jon Rauch a little bit of a break.

Colome was supposed to pitch the second of back-to-back rehab games for Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, but the Nationals told him come to Washington instead and be ready to pitch against the Mets that same day.

There was a problem, though. When the Nationals needed him to pitch the eighth inning, Colome was not at the ballpark. Colome's flight to Washington was delayed twice and he didn't show up to Robert F. Kennedy Stadium until the bottom of the eighth inning. Colome was originally scheduled to arrive at the ballpark by late morning.

By the time Colome got to the ballpark, the damage had been done as the Nationals were pounded by the Mets, 8-2 in front of 29,092.
