And if it wasnt for this accident, the Nady trade doesnt happen--

Omar indicated that's not true,he was looking at Bert anyway..that's probably BS though.

From an ESPN.com article:

Sanchez was riding in a cab that got into an accident near the team's hotel in Florida on Sunday night, the Mets said. He flew back to New York on Monday and was being treated at a hospital.

The Mets expect to learn in about a week whether Sanchez will need surgery. If he does, the right-hander would miss the rest of the season -- potentially a huge blow to the team's World Series hopes.

If not, he could return in September, according to general manager Omar Minaya.

Is this true? This is the first I've heard anything that Sanchez might be back this year.

He may have been looking at Berto, but you can bet this tipped the scales as far as making a move goes.

Marty Noble has a good handle on things. 4-6 weeks, unless surgery is required. Alternatively, surgery unless 4-6 weeks won't do the trick.

Relief pitching is so tempermantal though. I thought we already dodged a bullet when Sanchez returned from the tingly arm thingy as effectively as he had.

Anyway, Noble suggests they were on the verge of a 3-way bringing Oswalt here, Tejada to Houston and Milledge & Everett to Baltimore when the accident interrupted things from a Met POV.

why would anything be allowed to interrupt a deal that brings us Go..i mean Oswalt?

Omar Minaya's conference call with the Mets beat reporters has been posted in audio format to Mets.com.

Highlights:

Omar repeatedly confirmed that a bigger deal was considered on Sunday but talks had been "losing steam" as of late Sunday.

He was informed about Sanchez at 1-1:30 AM this morning but didn't get all the details until 6-7 AM.

The taxi was on I-95, Sanchez was the only Mets player in the cab, it was hit, Omar couldn't confirm if it was a drunk driver, it was pushed up against the wall (unclear if that was the median or the side of the freeway).

Omar couldn't give definite odds on whether Sanchez would actually need surgery or not. He was flown back to New York, he's in a lot of pain, they're going to control that first and the evaluation will probably be in a week or so. Omar referred to it as a dislocated shoulder.

JD - "Anyway, Noble suggests they were on the verge of a 3-way bringing Oswalt here, Tejada to Houston and Milledge & Everett to Baltimore when the accident interrupted things from a Met POV."

I still would have preferred that deal, assuming it was ever close to happening. Oswalt is a stud, top of the rotation guy that the Mets could really use in the post-season. His presence would have freed up Maine or El Duque for the bullpen. The line up that has been producing would have remained intact with Nady in right field.

Instead, the team still doesn't have a dominant, proven starter to pair with Pedro and Glavine. Now the Mets will need to depend upon ahead strong rookie and hope that he can produce at the big league level. Nady's departure will likely mean even more playing time for Endy Chavez. Though he has been a pleasant surprise this season, if he is starting a great deal it further weakens the Mets options for a left handed bat off the bench.

No matter the Nady deal -
if a 100% Sanchez can return before seasons end, Ill be happy about that.

As much as we think we know about that deal, we're just assuming that Minaya pulled out of it to preserve Millege to replace Nady and make the Robo deal happen, aren't we? We know talks were "losing steam" but not with whom, right?

FWIW, Omar on WFAN this evening sounded a bit down, like he tried to get something done and didn;t and was disappopinted.

I think we have to hitch our wagons here to the fact we added Oliver Perez to a crop of young starters including Pelfrey, Maine, Humber, Bannister, Soler, and that, considering we had to get a reliever, and Hernandez was pursued by several teams, and the Pirates were getting robbed all over the place, Nady was what it took to get him.

I think that while Omar tends to pay full retail in many of the deals he makes, his shopping bag usually contains an item that might just be bargain.

He knew more than I did about Sanchez and Maine. Maybe I can give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

And the fact that he almost got that Oswalt deal done makes me like him more. Oswalt is the only type of player I would've wanted Milledge traded for.

Perez at one time certainly had the stuff to make him a top flight starter.
If Peterson can help him find his old form he would be a pleasant stocking stuffer.

I don't understand why people say it like that. I don't care who does it, and I don't have much more faith in Peterson than anyone else.

I say it like that because he is our pitching coach.

I'm so 100% ok with Xavier Nady being flipped for Perez & Hernandez. I WISH we got Oswalt, but you weren't in the room or the conversation so I don't want to second guess Omar Minaya on it.

I also admire him for not being afraid to use a guy he acquired to achieve something and he's done that twice now.

I DO THINK that Mike Cameron as a top 10 CF is worth more then Hernandez & Perez, but I think we have to accept that as a right fielder coming off a serious injury we were probably obliged to take 60 cent on the dollar unless we were prepared to play chicken.

Exactly. He didn't give up Milledge for a rental or for a second line pitcher, just to be able to say he made a deal. He made a good faith effort to go for the best that was available, but didn't pull a panic move when (what I think he must have known was a longshot) didn't pan out.

Sometimes the deals you don't make are as important as the ones you do.

I am hoping (without clear justification) that part of Omar's limited approach to the Trade Deadline Pitching Buffet has to do with his secret knowledge that from among
Pelfrey/Maine/bannister/Soler/Humber/Oliver, two really have the goods to emerge as unexpected fall heroes this season.

Maybe the luxury of a 14 game lead provides the circumstance in which one or more of these pitchers can have the chance to make this wishful thinking come true.

By Oliver, I assume you mean Perez and not Darren?

Anyway, I doubt that most of the ones listed have much chance of being a postseason hero. Oliver Perez and Humber are 2007 candidates. I think Soler also has had his chance for this year. I'm curious to see what they'll do about Bannister when he's healthy again. Pelfrey's probably pitching for his roster spot tonight. Maine is probably the one with the best chance of pitching in the playoffs, and that can change with a few bad starts.

Speaking of Bannister, he pitched seven innings in his second rehab start for St. Lucie last night. He gave up no runs, four hits, no walks and struck out eight.

Hey, I made it clear I was hoping without justification, and yes I meant Perez. Can't anyone "drink the Koolaid" around here in peace?

Yet another reason NOT to trade Nady for a reliever.

You're promoting Bannister as a late inning reliever?

I'd think that Pelfrey's going down no matter what, with Heath Bell returning.

It's cold comfort, but at least this story leads to quotes from and references to Sanchez's agent, Bean Stringfellow.
