Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 19, 2025 Posted October 19, 2025 "Tom Seaver of ..." is an exciting new thread that has gotten a lot buzz in critical circles and promises to make a lot of year-end top-ten lists. The thread works like this — I ask you "Who is the Tom Seaver of ... [insert a certain professional field here]?" You answer and provide at least some explanation of your thinking, and then end by asking the next poster, "Who is the Tom Seaver of ... [insert a certain professional field here]?"So I ask who "Who is the Tom Seaver of ... men's professional golf?" And you answer "Jack Nicklaus. He is somewhat contemporary to Tom, and he was the best while maintaining a self-consciously cultivated image of bestness, projecting a bland handsomeness that rang as kind of square in a loosey-goosey hippy era, while still being impressively intimidating in a manner even the counterculture he diverged from could respect."And then you ask your own Tom Seaver question for the next guy.Something like that. Answering your own question is a thread foul, even though I just did so in my example. Also, if you dominate the thread by answering every other question, you are a thread hog, which is one of the worst things a person can be.Hopefully, by the end of the thread, we will have exhausted wacky categories ("Who is the Tom Seaver of televangelists?" "What is the Tom Seaver of athletic footwear?" "Which is the Tom Seaver of sub-Saharan African countries?") while getting a clearer picture of the historical enigma that is Tom Seaver. So I begin — Who is the Tom Seaver of ... performing stage magicians?![FIMG=750]https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Tom-Seaver.jpg?quality=85&w=1024&h=628&crop=1[/FIMG]

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2025 Posted October 22, 2025 So, my answer is going to be a bit different than the rest of you guys because of what Tom Seaver means to me. You guys remember the Hall of Fame pitcher, the Franchise. I have very few memories of him actually pitching for the Mets. The last memory of him that I have on the field was one spring training where he tried a comeback that didn't pan out. Otherwise, most of my memories of him are as an announcer. And not a great one. Full of himself, prone to cliches, very little actual analysis. And off the field, he was a jerk. When SC was a kid, we got into the elevator at Shea with Seaver. He was stonefaced, staring straight ahead. There were a few other kids on the elevator, all with dads looking for an opportunity to intro their kids to the Franchise. He never gave any opening. When the doors opened, he walked off briskly before anyone could say anything. So movie monsters. I'll go with Dracula. That name seems to mean a lot to guys older than me. But for my personal experience, it's pretty underwhelming.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 22, 2025 Author Posted October 22, 2025 Dracula is fine, although you need a question as well.

metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2025 Posted October 23, 2025 I totally agree with CF , I only know Seaver from calling games etc , to me he often came across as an ******* , his partnership with Dave O'Brien was absolutely awful, unprepared and dismissive

The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2025 Posted October 23, 2025 Pete Rose. Like Seaver he had an almost maniacal competitive drive to succeed and be great. Rose's crouching batting stance was as distinctive as was Seaver's drop and drive delivery to the plate. Like Seaver, Rose always got his uniform dirty. Lastly, they both had a reputation for being rather arrogant off the field.*Who was the Tom Seaver of the 1970's Oakland A's?*I hate to equate Saver with Rose in any way, but it was my first thought and so much of it seems to fit.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 23, 2025 Author Posted October 23, 2025 The Tom Seaver of the Bible was David. Incredible with a sling, got an incredible underdog over the top, but when they made him a king, he could be a real jerk. Also, they both liked wine.
