whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted September 30 Posted September 30 I have thought a lot about this and I’ve decided that among some very favoriteMets, since 1972, my favorite is Sid Fernandez Who is yours
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Mike Piazza always for me , I became a Mets fan around 97, so the Piazza years always feel really meaningful to me ,I have a lot of attachment to many of those teams and players whippoorwill 1
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Tom Seaver, he spoke to me before to me before the national anthem of a game he was starting at Jarry Park Montreal
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 1 Posted October 1 My coming of age as a Mets fan coincided with the '86 team so my all time favorite Met(s) were, and are, Doc and Daryl.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted October 1 Posted October 1 I think it'll always be Mookie for me. My card collection is heavy on Kevin McReynolds and Keith Hernandez, but if I had to pick one and only one, it's Mookie.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 1 Posted October 1 I'll cast the second vote for Mookie Wilson.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted October 1 Posted October 1 Give me David Wright. Just a fuckin great Met
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 1 Posted October 1 I've got a lot of favorite Mets. Mookie is probably the only one I'd possibly take a bullet for. whippoorwill 1
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 1 Posted October 1 I like the players who look like they're having fun out there, making a lot of money to play a game. That was Mookie Wilson. And Francisco Lindor, too. But Mookie came along when I was younger and more impressionable, and although Lindor has had some iconic moments as a Met, nothing like Mookie's big moment. Having said that, it's hard to quibble with anyone choosing David Wright.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 1 Posted October 1 Yeah, I'd take some punches and kicks for Lindor, and probably some nunchucks for David Wright.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 1 Posted October 1 Picking up in Grimm's post I liked Cliff Floyd a lot , certainly my memories of him are he always seems to be enjoying it, except of course having to rehab in the "black hole " that is PSL whippoorwill 1
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I understand Seaver had left the Mets before many here started watching but.. Mookie Wilson over Seaver? Wtf
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 2 Posted October 2 Mookie's the bee's knees. He's a cat-in-pajamas print pattern on the pajamas of a cat in pajamas. He's the soft, crunchy taco inside the soft crunch taco.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted October 2 Posted October 2 That's precisely it. I obviously acknowledge what Seaver meant (and means) to the Mets, it's just that by 1982 when I found baseball, he was just another old guy to me, like Steve Carlton or Jim Kaat. Tom Seaver doesn't even make the 25-man roster of my FAVORITE Mets. My favorite Mets are all guys I watched.
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I've been a Mets fan since I was 9 years old or so and cannot say I've ever had a favorite. Picking a favorite kind of implies some level of idolization, and though I enjoy baseball and clearly have a strong affinity for the Mets, it all at its core is a frivolity. So I'm not going to idolize a baseball player. It seems silly. I've been to enough baseball games, major and minor, to see they're just people in real life. In fact, I was kind of taken aback at how human they are, when I developed the capacity to see things in such a way. They're not just folks you see on TV, they're actual people. The one that really registered when I saw Curtis Granderson for the first time. It's like, "oh, they're just guys."
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 2 Posted October 2 I've been a Mets fan since 1971, when Tom Seaver was all that and a bag of chips. Opening a pack of Topps baseball cards and getting a Tom Seaver was like Charlie Buckett getting a Golden Ticket. But as good as he was, and as much as he meant to the team, he kind of fell somewhat short of being completely likeable. Mookie was all positive energy. I'll never argue that Mookie was better than Seaver, but that's not the only factor that goes into "favorite", at least not as I define it.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 2 Posted October 2 But Mookie is the sun. Mookie is the rain. Mookie makes my life this foolish game. Tom Seaver is Tom Seaver.
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted October 5 Posted October 5 There is definitely a difference between greatest Met and favorite Met, at least to me. Seaver is the greatest Met, the face of the franchise. For favorite, I go with some one that likable, fun to watch, a supportive, hustling player. No question, Juan Soto is the best current player on the Mets, but he is far from my favorite current Met. My favorite Mets would be David Wright, Francisco Lindor, Mookie Wilson, Rusty Staub & Brandon Nimmo. whippoorwill 1
whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted October 6 Author Posted October 6 Gotta say though I love Sid for a lot of reasons, Mookie is probably the bestest favoritist Met ever
