Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2024 Posted March 21, 2024 InterestingThey musta saw my Vientos prediction
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2024 Author Posted March 21, 2024 Martino:Mets were always only going to sign JD Martinez if the deal became irresistible . If got there. Per league source: $4.5MM this year. $1.5MM a year deferred from 2034-38. Pending physical. @JonHeyman first reported that they were in agreement. This significantly reduces the luxury tax penalty for this year.

Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2024 Posted March 21, 2024 Love it. Lineup just got deeper and better.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 21, 2024 Posted March 21, 2024 Paying up from 2034-2038. That's some deferrin'.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2024 Posted March 21, 2024 Holy crap!Also... J. D. Martinez Day will be the new Bobby Bonilla Day.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 21, 2024 Posted March 21, 2024 Phun Fact: The Mets were about to go into a new season with their biggest winter acquisition being ... Harrison Bader?I imagine that, had the offseason so concluded, it would have been their least brand-namey offseason since ... when? I guess the 2019-2020 offseason. Chasen Shreve, Rick Porcello, Michael Wacha, and Jake Marisnick weren't really names that lit up Times Square.

Martinez has worn uniform numbers 14 and 28 in the big leagues. Number 14 (which he obviously won't wear as a Met) with the Astros from 2011 to 2013, and 28 since then, with the Tigers, Diamondbacks, Red Sox, and Dodgers. With the Mets, that number is currently assigned to his manager, Carlos Mendoza. Hmmm...

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 Some creative accounting got this done. But the Mets are better for it.

A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 I like this move at every angle. If the Mets really are a bubble team and JD is worth between 2 and 3 wins, that's huge. And if he misses 50-odd games like he did last year, we should be plenty covered with Vientos/DJ/Baty/Choi, etc. Plus it gives Vientos a little safety net to not be awesome right away. Good job, Steve and STOINS.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 I imagine that this means that Choi (and Voit, the "oi" duo) will leave the organization, but Vientos and Stewart should still be around.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 According to Joel Sherman in the Post, Martinez will not be on the Opening Day roster. He's agreed to start the season in the minors with a rehab stint of about ten days.https://nypost.com/2024/03/22/sports/j-d-martinezs-mets-season-will-begin-with-minor-league-at-bats/https://nypost.com/2024/03/22/sports/j-d-martinezs-mets-season-will-begin-with-minor-league-at-bats/

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 They're also known as the 'oi' guys because that's the sound the scale says when they step on it.

Apparently Choi has a late March opt-out and Stewart has a minor league option, but that seems kinda unlikely.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 We may have to wait on those moves because it was just announced that Martinez will be starting the season in the minors.Later
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 Right, the 'deferred availability' clause in the contract kinda got glossed over in the breaking news.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 While this is going on, Mark Vientos hit his 5th homer in today's 5-3 loss to the MFYs.Later
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 Well, this is a vote of no-confidence in Vientos. They're both righties so there's no platoon situation. Just hope JD doesn't statistically morph into a skinny Vogelbach.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 I'm hoping he doesn't morph into a fat vogelbach
