G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 The BBWAA ballot has been released for the Hall of Fame class of 2024. It includes five Mets under consideration for the first time — David Wright, Jose Reyes, Bartolo Colon, Jose Bautista and Adrian Gonzalez — and five Met holdovers — Carlos Beltran, Bobby Abreu, Billy Wagner, Gary Sheffield and Francisco Rodriguez. Also some non-Mets.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Manny Ramirez, ratted out by A-Rod, and dragged off to the Hall of Ignominy with him.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Really hope Wagner gets in

whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Manny beloved around here. Though he broke my little boy's heart

whippoorwill Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 There are excellent choices here. None of them deserve to be judged by the likes of usBaseball onlyBig fan of Gary Sheffield as well
The Hot Corner Old-Timey Member Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 I'm a little like the tough "Rusian judges" when it comes to Hall of Fame voting. I believe there are far too many enshrined that were good, but far from the greats of the game or their era. It is with that kind of mindset, I would vote for the following:Adrian BeltreCarlos BeltranTodd HeltonJoe MauerI'm on the fence for Billy Wagner. If only Wright could have had a few more injury free years. Put that man in the Mets Hall of Fame.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 23, 2023 Posted November 23, 2023 Todd Zeile had better career numbers than Wright.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 I'm not sure that ballot's going to help him win the J.G. Taylor Spink Award.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 And it won't get him many smiles from friends of Reuben Tejada.Later
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 I'm a "big Hall" kind of guy, so of the candidates with Mets experience I could actively support or could see Hall of Fame cases for the bolded names:David Wright, Jose Reyes, Bartolo Colon, Jose Bautista and Adrian Gonzalez — and five Met holdovers — Carlos Beltran, Bobby Abreu, Billy Wagner, Gary Sheffield and Francisco Rodriguez.I actively support Abreu, Beltran, Wagner, Sheffield and Rodriguez. I don't actively support Wright, yet, but could in the future; that doesn't mean I think he'd hurt the Hall too much if he was elected, I just don't actively push his induction yet. Bautista could feasibly have a peak case, but I don't actively support him and would be hard-pressed to support him. Colon was good, but he was good like Dennis Martinez or Jamie Moyer were good, in that they pitched forever and put together good compiler stats because of it. Adrian Gonzalez and Jose Reyes I'd say had Hall of Fame potential, but faltered too early to make it.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 David Wright has more class than most of the names bandied about hereYou go Adam Rubin!
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Having class won't get in you, but lacking class can sure keep you out
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 3 or 4 more David Wright-ish years and he would have had a puncher's chance of getting in. But alas. Hope he at least gets the 5% to hang around another year.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 I think that would be a surprise if he gets to that 5%
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Reach 5%? Golly gee, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 A yes to Andruw Jones along with a no to Carlos Beltrán is tough position to stake out. To my thinking, anyhow.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 29, 2023 Posted November 29, 2023 Andre Dawson says he has written the Hall requesting that his plaque be altered to depict him in a Cubs hat, rather than as an Expo.I'm relatively certain that it's simply a matter of far more financial opportunities being afforded to him in framing himself as a Cub, moreso than any animus toward Montreal, but he'd do better to make such initiatives discretely. Someday there will be Major League Baseball again in Montreal, and there will be a cost to actively divorcing his legacy from there.

To my thinking, anyhow.Mine as well. Andruw at his best was a terrific player but his age 30 and up seasons were mediocre at best. The fact that he started so young made his 20's a complete decade of HoF level play but Beltran was stillcontributing to teams in his second decade as well. Jones also got pulled off the field more than occasionally for not hustling both on offense and in the field. I remember an exasperated Bobby Cox muttering to reportersthat he was running out of ideas on what to do about his lapses, 'I've already taken most of his money fromhim' (fined him repeatedly).Edgy MD wrote:Andre Dawson says he has written the Hall requesting that his plaque be altered to depict him in a Cubs hat, rather than as an Expo. Here's where I go into my rant about how ridiculous the idea is that the insignia on the plaque makes one a HoF'er for that team to the exclusion of any others he played for. People have been acting as this is the case for decades now and it's driven me nuts for just as long.I'll spare you all the full rant as you've heard it before.
