I've seen speculation in a number of places that the Mets might look to add Cody Bellinger to their outfield. (It's possible, of course, that all of this commentary is coming from one questionable source. Who can say anymore?)



Anyway, if the world at large is talking about it, then we can too. I don't expect this to happen, we'll see how the buzz develops over the next month or two.

I'm surprised he just turned 27 this past July. I don't know about the fit necessarily, but maybe the Mets would be scheming to get younger, save a couple hundred mil with Belly and trade Pete away for more elite prospects. I'll show myself out.

He's bouncing back from three consecutive years, not one. He was dreadful for all of 2020-2022. Let's not understate that.

His OPS+ in 2020 was 112. Down from his monster/MVP season in 2019 but hardly dreadful plus small sample size/Covid season and all that. So it's two bad years, 2021-22, followed by a return to form this past year. 2021 was at least partly due to injury from the 2020 post-season. I have no idea why 2022 was so awful and it merits looking into.



He's also 28 y/o -- Burnitz II was 33 (and was never the player Bellinger has already been) -- has been ROY, MVP, SS, and GG (which he's capable at winning at 1B or the OF).

i'd approach with caution, but not a hard no.



we could use more offense in the outfield, since we really only have one full time OFer in nimmo, and a bunch of middle infielders who we think can handle the job. and a pair of big question marks that are really, really hard to rely on in marte and stewart. piece it all together, and maybe, just maybe, we don't need a cody bellinger...? or if you put it that way, maybe we absolutely do.



that being said, i'd rather we focus on pitching. and if cody distracts from that objective, then i want no part in him.

From '17 to '20, his launch angles were in the 16s and 17s and he was winning ROY and MVP and doing stud things.



In '21 and '22, his launch angles shot up over 22 and 20 respectively. His K's spiked and his xBA cratered, just above Mendoza in both years.



In 2023, his launch angle was back to 17.2 and he could hit again. He's maybe not 47-homer guy any more, but his OPS this year beat Pete's. I love Pete and want Pete back, but I would get it if the Mets were thinking about this anyway.
