The name we're hearing more than any other is Craig Counsell.

Former Cubs manager Joe Maddon has reported expressed an interest.

Joe Espada is another name that comes up. Also Carlos Beltran.

I'm sure there will be a lot to talk about in the weeks to come. So here's a place where we can do that.

I'm rooting for an out of the box pick, like the next Joe Maddon but not Joe Maddon. Why shop these experienced guys so soon after whacki g Buck?

I'm not excited about Counsell or Beltran

Me neither. Of the names I've heard, I think I'd like to give Espada a try, pairing him with an experienced bench coach.

But hopefully the Mets will make a more informed decision than I'm capable of making.

Counsel will be able to talk to other teams when his contract expires on Oct 31.

I'm sure there we'll hear about candidates other than the ones already mentioned while we're waiting.

It's hard to say. The top two winning percentages in Mets history belong to managers without previous experience.

You are right. I was thinking more recently, but should have been more clear. You're looking at Davey Johnson and Willie Randolph? Harrelson is pretty close to them, too.

Our track record with inexperienced guys has not been great.

I'd be willing to accept Donald Trump as manager, if that would satisfy his lust for leadership positions over the next decade or so.

Seriously. I wonder if the manager makes an actual difference in a team's W-L record sometimes.

And Trump would certainly be amusing.

Boy, the post-game press conferences would be solid gold, wouldn't they?

You'd have to think Counsell is the front-runner just due to Stearns' familiarity with him.

I'd thought when they hired Buck that they'd finally gotten the best manager available, but things didn't work out (a lot of which was out of his control). So I don't know what they do next. Glad it's not my call.

Every loss rigged, every umpire corrupt, every news story written by an enemy of the people, yeah. It would be a pisser.

You've got to wonder if the manager matters, don't you? Buck was a total genius up until the last week of 2022. Then he became a total asshole badly in need of firing (see sig line, below). I don't know how much he mattered, in the end. The players played well until they didn't. Then, compelled to play Vogie and deprived of Diaz, surprise!!! , the players stopped playing well. Could the Donald, or Ronald McDonald for that matter, have done much different? We'll never know.

Andy Martino is big on Beltran:

For Mets' sake, David Stearns should get to know Carlos Beltran and offer a meaningful job

The Mets have a baseball genius in Beltran, who should either manage them or have a significant role in player development in 2024 and beyond

Damn, that reads like a letter of recommendation from Andy directly to Stearns. I couldn't tell you what makes Beltran a better managerial choice than Joe Espada, so pieces like this are kinda cool, even if he goes from calling him a "baseball genius" in one sentence to an "unknown quantity with upside" a couple paragraphs later.

I really can't think of a more amusing candidate for Mets manager. I rarely watch press conferences unless I read that something happened worth going back to watch, but he would be must see the wouldn't he? Of course, the Wilpons still own SNY, so why would Cohen wanna give that to them? ;)

While the search for a new manager is just getting underway, league sources told The Athletic this week that the New York Mets expect to hire someone outside the organization to replace Buck Showalter.

Latest from The Athletic, no surprise but eliminates Beltran etc

I actually LOLd at this idea

I was talking more about this the other day with some friends, the comedic potential really never ceases AND they could even fire him on the field during the 7th inning stretch one night. If the Mets can't win 90 games for 400 million dollars they can at least entertain us

But sure, if disgracing yourself with a hire is what it takes to keep the ex-president from becoming the nex-president, then sign me up.
