Lee was pretty much hanging on to the edge of the roster when this story broke, so he was quite possibly the next up to be DFA'd whether or not the transaction is related to the report.

I would say the transaction is 99.9999999999% likely to be based solely on the allegations. He was arguably still the best plan in the organization for a prolonged Nimmo absense

Why? His 692 OPS at AAA last year didn't scream "Khalil Lee is the answer!!!" And Pham is the next guy up in the case of anyone's extended absence. If it's Nimmo out hurt, Canha (or maybe Marte) would see lots of CF. It very likely wouldn't have been Khalil Lee getting all the ABs anyway.

I think it was more likely that Lee would have had a shot at Marte's job after he aged out. But that's a few years off and the Mets will have time to cultivate other options between now and then. They certainly didn't have all of their eggs in Lee's basket.

Lee cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Syracuse.

From DiComo:

News: MLB's investigation of Khalil Lee is ongoing, but the league has approved of him reporting to Minor League camp on March 2.

Lee is under investigation for an alleged domestic incident in Syracuse last summer.

I don't see anything in that piece to suggest that the Mets have decided to "hold everything," or that they have a "new plan" for Lee.

I didn't even get that there was much of an "everything" to hold, or an "old plan" to update.

Yeah, the only real "change" I can see is that he had been on the 40-man roster but now he's not. He's still in the organization, and he'll still play for the Mets if a time comes when he appears to be their best option. No change there.

The story, and one of the ones it links to, claim that Lee faces federal charges - but it doesn't explain that assertion at all - why would federal charges be in play here? I don't see anything in the limited information out there that would shed any light on that.

He didn't show up for his court appearance.

A New York Mets prospect angered a Syracuse judge last week by not showing up for a scheduled court appearance. The player's lawyer tried to explain the circumstances behind the player's absence but the judge didn't agree.

When told that Mets' minor leaguer, Khalil Lee was in Florida at Spring Training, City Court Judge Ann Magnarelli responded, "I don't care that he is a Syracuse Mets player," according to Anne Hayes of syracuse.com. The court appearance stems from a May 7, 2022 incident where Lee is accused of domestic violence by an ex-girlfriend.

Probably not the best strategy, blowing off a court appearance...

The article linked in the original post (below) has a bit more info and it sounds like Lee might have a shitty attorney who gave him shitty advice OR Lee just went to spring training and told his lawyer to handle it. Either way, bad bad bad bad. Also this:

Magnarelli asked if Tedd thought his client would agree to plea to the criminal obstruction of breath in exchange for a probation sentence.

Tedd said that he would advise Lee not to take the plea so that he would not have a misdemeanor on his criminal record.

Tedd pointed out that Lee had no criminal history and has never been accused of domestic violence in the past.

“He is 25 years old,” the judge responded, “Let's hope not.”

A plea avoids jail time but obviously puts his job in very big jeopardy. I guess Lee is denying it? I haven't a comment from him anywhere.

Could be. I might guess a union would tell him to keep his yap shut until investigations are done, but failure to appear would seem like bad advice wherever it came from?

Next court date is April 14 with a AAA Syracuse game scheduled a couple hours away in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Don't skip court for BP, Khalil.

I suppose we'll know where the bad advise/idea came from when we see if there is a new attorney on April 14th.

"oh yeah go skip the appearance to play baseball, let the judge know you are a stereotypical athlete who thinks you are too good for the rules, I'll cover for you bro!" doesn't sound like great legal advise.

I feel pretty certain that his failure to appear was not due to bad advice, but rather foolishness and wishful thinking.
