Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 So it's what, two slots that need to be eliminated before Sunday's game? And not that anyone expects the decision to come down to Cano vs Dom (although a choice between Cano and someone is likely to be part of the mix),but does anyone think that if Cano had hit Dom's ball Monday night that he would have been safe at 1st? Of course not, meaning that the game ends on that AB with no McSquirrel dash home, no Nimmo 1st pitch ambush, and no early season signature win. One shirley hopes that's something Bucky and Billy and Stevie are factoring into the equation.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 I think they take the path of least resistance and send Sean Reid-Foley and Yoan Lopez down, even if that means carrying only 12 pitchers.I'm fine with cutting Cano as a sunk cost who is unlikely to produce significant value — but I bet the Mets want to wait him out a little more.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 Dom gets traded?Otherwise goodbye Cano.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 I have no love for Cano but many of the Mets do and the team might see him as more of a player-coach. The $ is irrelevant as it's a sunk cost but Buck might want his experienced eye around. SRF (who is out of options) and Yoan.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 I'm guessing the training room makes the decision for them in the next five days.I guess I kind of expected Canny to get traded for somebody else's money pit of a contract, and the Mets get a pitcher who was terrific in 2016, signed a big one, and is now playing out the string, putting in the starts, being a pro, but a ghost of his former self. The Mets take that guy on and give him Peterson's starts until further notice.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 well. that's awfully convenient.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 Sending two pitchers down is the easy move. But Cano is really the third wheel here. You have JD and Dom as the natural DH's from right and left. Cano has demonstrated he can't really play defensively any more, and every at-bat he gets steals one from a more productive hitter. Buck seems to like Cano's 'veteran presence', and he seems popular in the clubhouse. But the real problem is eating the contract, which I don't think they're ready to do just yet.
Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 If Cano is cut, does his $20 million still count against the salary total for the CBT? If he's released, I suspect some bottom-feeder will pick him up for the league minimum with the Mets paying the rest.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Author Posted April 26, 2022 And Cano may eventually get dropped but that doesn't mean it has to happen this week. I just liked pointing out that Dom busted it out of the box from stride #1. If he didn't start until #2 then he would have been out.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Author Posted April 26, 2022 Joel Sherman examines several possibilities for the mini-cut-down date (it's after Sunday's games, not before) and one or more of them just might involve Dom.https://nypost.com/2022/04/26/mets-could-face-roster-decision-between-dominic-smith-robinson-cano/https://nypost.com/2022/04/26/mets-could-face-roster-decision-between-dominic-smith-robinson-cano/
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 Barring injuries, I think the clear move is to send down Smith and preserve all the assets. Any other move means losing simeone from the organization that we dont want to lose. This roster, once cut to 26, doesnt really have room for Smith and Cano. This comes down to who has options.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 If they demote Dom over cutting Cano, they can go eff themselves.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 Cano hadn't played in over a year - a longer period to see if he has anything left seems warranted to me particularly as neither of them is hitting and if you cut Cano he is gone whereas if you demote Smith he can be back in 2 weeks if you then decide you've seen enough of Cano or a roster spot opens through injury.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 I just feel like if we don't cut Cano now, we're only kicking the can. The best solution would be for him to get caught in another pee test
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 Saul Goodman could probably arrange something like that.

nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2022 Posted April 27, 2022 X-Rays negative on JD Davis' foot, but putting him on the 10 day DL anyway could solve the roster crunch for a week while the Mets figure out what they want to do.

Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2022 Posted April 27, 2022 Could the Mets really be planning around the decidedly nonzero chance that Cano does get popped again? Keep him around and hope either that he produces (because he's back on PEDs) or gets permanently suspended (because he's back on PEDs)?
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2022 Posted April 28, 2022 I can't imagine he would be back on PEDs at this point. He has to realize that the money he is currently owed by the Mets is more than he'd earn himself - given his age and suspension history - even if he were to have a good PED-induced season. His best move this point is to ensure he gets paid in full on his current contract, which means staying clean.
Gwreck Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2022 Posted April 28, 2022 But he already had the 10-year guaranteed contract at the time of suspensions 1 and 2, which together cost him 1.5 years of salary. Given the already clear lack of good judgment, I see little barrier to the possibility that he could now jeopardize another 2 years of salary.
