Edgy MD Site Manager Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 One takeaway from the last month, as the Mets went from a bad team in August that perhaps wasn't quite as terrible as their record to ... a bad team in September that was every bit as terrible as their record*: I don't think whatever effect Luis was going for by locking in his lineup on September 1 — and running it out there almost every day — worked.Smith played his way out of the lineup, no doubt, but the idea that McNeil had claimed the job in a way that Smith hadn't was spurious. Villar certainly earned a lot of playing time, but what insult did J.D. Davis utter that led to him all but disappearing? J.D. certainly didn't distinguish himself in his five starts, but Villar playing third base every night sure suggested that he wasn't an everyday thirdbaseman either.Kevin Pillar still got plenty of cuts in September. But it was easy to forget that Luis Guillorme, on the other hand, was even still on the roster.I don't know what Luis' prospects are going forward, but I hope the forensic study on his decision-making is thorough.* Pythagoras doesn't support this categorization, by the way.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Yeah all good points. All that said, I'm almost indifferent to whether they bring Luis back and that's wrapped up in the bigger question of whom his bosses will be. At the very least, having a guy with lots or org knowledge and experience managing (even if those experiences include not making easy to make playoffs 2 years straight) have got to count for something
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Oh, I know what Luis' prospects are going forward. Nonexistent. He'll be fired about 15 minutes after the end of the game next Sunday.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Building a winning team is like a chemical reaction. When it fizzles, you have to add or remove elements to achieve the desired result.Or you may have to do both. This team appears to need both.BTW - Forensic isn't just a post-mortem (As used in crime shows). The definition of Forensic is anything that could be admitted as evidence in a court of law. While many might have described this season as criminal, I'm not sure whether anybody is going to get sued or arrested as a result.Later

bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Martino seems to have a crush on Luis but his hopes will be crushed on Monday (I think). He can go make bad decisions for another team as far as I'm concerned."the idea that McNeil had claimed the job in a way that Smith hadn't was spurious." Yeah. I didn't understand why McNeil was selected and not Dom but maybe the analytics staff saw something and decided to lock it in for the month (as Edgy said)."it was easy to forget that Luis Guillorme, on the other hand, was even still on the roster." On September 14 perhaps Luis forgot when, as I drove home from Jason Isbell, Baez tied it in the 9th and then Rojas used Reed, who was just off the IL, in the 11th when Devin Williams was available and STL scored 3. The Mets scored 2, had the tying run on 2d with 2 outs, a LHP on the mound, so Luis PH Almora instead of Guillorme because lefty/righty even though Guillorme is a far superior hitter and the Mets lost. Almora was sent down the next day and was just DFA'd and that's who the manager used in a big situation.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2021 Posted September 28, 2021 Maybe the best solution is redeploying Luis elsewhere in the org if/when the new Baseball Boss brings in his guys.

I watch (record) all his post game comments and answers and Ithink he's a baseball guy through and through. Team needs a drastic change of 'scenery' and firing the skip is gonna have to be the first place to start.
