Gerrit Cole cheated? Tsk Tsk

From the LA Times via Yahoo:

“Hey Bubba, it's Gerrit Cole, I was wondering if you could help me out with this sticky situation,” the pitcher wrote, adding a wink emoji. “We don't see you until May, but we have some road games in April that are in cold weather places. The stuff I had last year seizes up when it gets cold.”

Wow indeed.

There was talk about the two sides being far apart early on so six years for a guy you'll turn 33 mid-season will be seen as the Yanx blinking most likely, particularly since he's already

begun transitioning from middle IF to corner IF. Also maybe a case of buying high, his 2020 OPS was a full 100 points higher than any other single season and only two of his previous

years were within 200 points of that mark which is saying a lot when all those other (six full) seasons were played at Coors Field.

Wow.

Lest it go unsaid, 2020 was only nominally a baseball season. Maybe he's great, but it's hard to see this as anything but buying high.

Yanx trade four prospects for two years of Pirates hurler, and former #2 overall draft pick (2010), Jameson Taillon

Taillon didn't pitch in 2020

Posted

I might be wrong but the MFYs have never traded away a prospect that's amounted to anything.

OTOH they also have a good record of acquiring big-name guys who don't fully succeed

Posted

I can think of some Yankee-prospect tradeoffs that made a splash (our own Justin Wilson!), as well as some burgeoning stars traded off for full-blown stars.

How far back are we talking?

Posted

I dunno. The Cashman Era is now ridiculously long. The only guys I can think of off the top of my head are like Clippard and Melky Cabera.

But like the guys they gave up for Stanton or Michael Pineda... The whole Chapman thing (4 prospects who went nowhere to Cincy, then to the Cubs for Gleyber Torres, then resigning) It was like coming and going with that wife-beating steroid cheat

Masahiro Tanaka's stint with the Yanx is over as he heads back to Japan to become a Rakuten Eagle

I think Rakuten makes cheap insta-noodle dishes but I'm not sure. I don't think they make eagles.

More interesting to note is that, behind Gerrit Cole, the Yanx appear to be relying on three reclamation projects who haven't pitched much lately.

The 2-3-4 in their rotation could be the recently acquired Corey Kluber and Jameson Taillon, plus holdover/TJ-rehabbing Luis Severino. All three

were good and promising at one point, but they also combined for just 17 ML starts / 85 IP in 2019 [Kluber = 7 /36; Taillon = 7 / 37; Severino = 3 /12]

and just one start / one IP (Kluber) in 2020

The most recent ML appearances for each was: Kluber on 7/26/20; Severino on 9/28/19; Taillon on 5/1/19

Johnny Damon, menace to society. (Great Snooze lede.)

Johnny Damon, having already loudly supported Donald Trump and whined about coronavirus restrictions, completed the retired baseball player Triple Crown on Friday with a DUI in Florida.

Orlando-area cops pulled over Damon early Friday morning, when he registered a whopping 0.30 on a blood alcohol test, according to TMZ. (The legal limit in Florida is 0.08.)

Damon was arrested just after 1 a.m., when he was charged with a DUI. According to police, his wife, Michelle Mangan-Damon, shoved a cop and was charged with resisting arrest.

The Damons appeared together on the reality show “Below Deck” in 2019.

With Damon being a famous Trump supporter and Florida being the scumbag state that it is, they'll probably let Damon off scot-free.

Boy, .30 blood alcohol, I'm surprised he could find his car. He's lucky he didn't kill someone.

Yeah, that's uh ... really hard to pull off and live.

And I realize I'm late to the party here, but what a lede. Everybody at The Daily News deserves a day off.

Yanx manager Aaron Boone is taking an immediate leave of absence to have a pacemaker installed . Surgery to be done later today.

Boone, 47, has had heart issues going back to his college days, but this is still a big whoa!!

The MFY fertilizer just exudes from him.

Luke Voit's kneed for knee surgery pushes back his start to the season and means Jay Bruce will be the starting 1st baseman in the Bronx

Posted

Quick. Who led the AL in home runs last year?

It was Luke f'n Voit!!!

Who knew?

Bruce will thrive in that bandbox.

And they have such a dominating righty hitting lineup, they won't face too many lefty pitchers, so he'll get to play a lot.
