Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Newsy item in the Post speculating about what'll happen on Monday when the deal is expected to close.Sandy is expected to be the COO -- LOL, Jeff's role -- and possibly appoint a baseball operations chief and a GM. --Brodie not likely to get either of these roles--Sandy essentially making the baseball decisions already (Mallex, Frazier etc etc)--Considerations for new appointees include JP Ricciardi, who we know from his previous stint. He was the more "old-school" of the eggheads appointed last time and evidently a big whisperer to the Beat Guys. I am almost certain he's the "one Met insider" who trashed the Wilpons for the stealth Omar coup.--Other name (I didn't know) Bobby Heck, who is currently with the Rays and formerly with the Astros and would have been Cohen's recommendation to the ownership group when Jeff got all Brodie on us.--Aldo, still with the org apparently but whose name hasn't appeared in anything I've read for years now, John Ricco
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Strange that Van Wangenen, if he is indeed on the outs, is allowing himself to be left twisting in the wind, when he could just resign, wish the new ownership good luck, and keep his brand relatively undamaged.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2020 Author Posted November 5, 2020 Yeah, though the Post is based on vague industry speculation. I suppose having an agent on board wouldn;t be the worst thing and maybe that's Brodie's argument. I'm sure he could also go back to being an agent and wouldn't necessarily have earned another GM-ing job based on his track record with the Mets: Make a signature shitty trade, disappoint with a good collection of talent 2 years straight, fuck up a managerial decision, etc.

vtmet7 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 besides Bobby Heck, I have also heard that the A's assistant GM is high on the list of considerable candidates...Sandy might already have a good working relationship with him, since I believe Sandy has worked in the A's organization since he stepped down from the Mets
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 I wonder if Sandy has a relationship with Theo Epstein? What a splash it would be to get that dude to rebuild the Mets.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 He has a relationship with Billy Beane. I know that much.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 (edited) Another splash would be luring Kim Ng (former assistant GM with LA and the MFYs) out of the MLB office, where she is assistant VP of operations (to Joe Torre).Later Edited November 6, 2020 by Guest
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 12, 2020 Posted November 12, 2020 Michael Hill, 49, Harvard grad, former head of baseball ops for the Marlins (2013 - until recently "squeezed out" by Jeter), is the first known name to have https://nypost.com/2020/11/11/mets-interviewing-ousted-marlins-president-michael-hill/interviewed w/Sandy for the team President position."Hill would bring the blend of analytics and old-school scouting savvy to the position that it's believed Alderson has been seeking." sez the Puma

A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 So Theo is leaving the Cubs today after 9 season in charge. He was President of Baseball Ops there. Can I will this into existence?
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted November 17, 2020 Posted November 17, 2020 No, I cannot will this into existence. Per my buzzing phone, Theo is taking a year off. The beat goes on.

I mean, the Kim Ng hire was an incredible get for the Marlins. Her resume is stacked. I don't know how many women are languishing in the the executive ranks throughout MLB, but they're clearly overlooked resources by most every other team. You wanna assemble the best front office? Including the other half of the population is a start.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2020 Posted November 18, 2020 Rumblings are that Mike Chernoff is the current favorite for POBO. I'm hearing he's a smart guy. Local roots, and gets Cleveland to the playoffs every year on a shoestring budget. Maybe he brings his SS with him.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2020 Author Posted November 18, 2020 The other guy I read about is the current A's GM David Forst (egghead from Harvard who succeeded DePodesta), and their player personnel AGM Billy Owens (former MILB player/scout/coach)

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 19, 2020 Posted November 19, 2020 Every time I hear Chernoff's nae, I have to remind myself what his relationship to Mark is.To my memory, it was under the elder Chernoff that K-Rock went from an "FM Rock" to a "Classick Rock" format. The former had been stale for so long that the switchover was only somewhat discernible, but I associate it, and him, with the genre's surrender to history.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 NY Post:The Mets' search to bolster their front office has hit another dead end, when Chris Young pulled his name from consideration to be the team's general manager, The Post has learned.Young, MLB's senior VP of on field operations, withdrew because of family considerations. He lives in Dallas and has children ages 8, 10 and 12 and felt this was not the right time to uproot despite being intrigued by the position with the Mets.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2020 Posted December 10, 2020 So it turns out that Somebody is hiring front office execs ... as the Phillies have hired Dave Dombrowski to run their club.Dombrowski, long of Detroit but more recently with Boston, had previously said he wasn't interested in the Philly job or in any other position. He was, he said, committed to Nashville where he recently moved and had given a promise to a group there that he would lead the effort to secure an MLB franchise for Music City either by expansion or relocation. But now it looks like he changed his mind.I also figure that he's essentially going to be doing Sandy's job there so there wouldn't really have been a fit for him here although it's unclear whether the Mets spoke to him or not.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2020 Posted December 10, 2020 Dombrowski gets to make Philly more of a win now team.
duan Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 Dave Dombrowski's one of those guys who the SABR style community keep scratching their heads about but he keeps flying pennants and some flags for the teams he works with. Can't say that they are great in the aftermath but he does seem to be able to assemble the pieces.
