Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Did he bet another Speedo modeling session on it?
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 I've convinced myself it's gonna be Tim Bogar.* He'll be coming with the pixie dust of Houston's success (also has coached with Texas, Boston, Seattle) * he actually has some managerial experience (he finished out the 2014 season skippering the Rangers after Ron Washington was canned--he went 14-8!)* has front-office experience as an assistant to Jerry DiPoto * Minor league manager of the year 3X* Has experience getting a good performance out of Robinson Cano (Seattle's bench coach to Scott Servais)* he's an original Met (7th round draft of 87) and is the grandfather of the club's longest active Trade Chain --Traded to Houston in 1997 for Luis LopezLopez went to Milwaukee for Bill PulsipherPulsipher went to Arizona for Lenny HarrisHarris went to Milwaukee for Jeromy BurnitzBurnitz was traded to the Dodgers for Victor Diaz Diaz was traded to Texas for Mike Nickeas Nickeas was included in the Syndergaard deal
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 So I guess the criticism of Girardi was that he was too intense. Maybe for the media and the front office. This blurb from the Times when he was fired:Though Cashman and Girardi have divergent personalities and far different interests, they had generally enjoyed a strong working relationship.“I think he knows that he can speak his mind in a constructive way with me, and I can speak my mind in a constructive way with him,” Cashman said at the start of the 2016 season. “There's an openness that is encouraged here. I acquire the talent, and Joe deploys the talent, and sometimes you'll have disagreements on players' capabilities that I've acquired or strategies that he's employing.“You've got to be able to work through those in a healthy manner to have a successful manager-general-manager relationship, and I'm proud to say we have that,” Cashman added.https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/26/sports/baseball/joe-girardi-fired-yankees.htmlhttps://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/26/sports/baseball/joe-girardi-fired-yankees.htmlI'm guessing that someone as intense as Girardi, opinionated and having the track record to back it up, is someone that BroPon will want no part of. I'm guessing they stall until Girardi takes another job, which will give them cover to hire another puppet.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 bingo.I'm steeling myself for the arrival of the Booger.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 Now that Girardi has taken the Phillies job, expect the Mets to wrap this up with one of the first-time candidates pretty quickly.*We felt Joe Girardi was a great option, but we wanted to be thorough, and when we were ready to make a decision, Joe was no longer available. We wish him the best in Philadelphia.*In the end, it didn't make a difference, FIRST TIME MANAGER was our top choice. And we look forward to [CROSSOUT]controlling his every move[/CROSSOUT] seeing what he brings to the table.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 Eh. I believe if the Mets really liked Girardi most they could have/would have gotten him.Presuming they wind up with another 1st timer, what this does is to introduce the specter for any 2020 Met managerial criticism to be viewed in the context of eschewing the most experienced candidate. But that's a tough hook to hang a big decision on
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 I eliminated Joe Girardi from getting the Mets manager gig about seven seconds after I heard he was (allegedly) a candidate. They're gonna hire another Mickey Callaway. He'll be different, but the same.
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 Tracky's comments on the podcast were interesting. Some of his notes:-- Girardi would have been a bad fit. He didn't get into the reasons too much, but did say it wasn't about money.-- Buck wasn't interviewed.-- He was really high on Beltran and Perez. He said Beltran was part of the fairly small contingent of MFY front office types that goes on the road in the post season, and was talking with Beltran a bit. He noted Beltran earned about $200 million and clearly doesn't need this or any other job and asked why he wanted it. He said he loves the game, loves connecting with and helping players.-- He said Perez is another highly respected person, and that he does have some experience managing in the minors -- mostly in Latin America -- and as a coach in the majors.-- He made a couple references to the "bombshell" and made some comments about looks.-- He said Mets fans on Twitter might have been clamoring for Girardi, but he dismisses them, saying they represent only a small group of fans. (The other host debated this.)
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 I mean I'd rather have Maddon than Girardi if we're talking 'experienced managers' anyway. Maybe he just would rather golf in October.
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 Mike Silva @MikeSilvaMediaA very plugged in source told me that we all should put Tim Bogar as the favorite to get the #Mets job... not a definite but I would start doing research on him. #nymets #lgm

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 This has stretched out long enough. I thought today would be the day. There's only one more rest day in the World Series.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 If it's Tim Bogar or Bombshell Hinch, they'll have to wait for the Series to end.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 Do you think Ventura would qualify as a bombshell? Todd Zeile? A managerial trade for Ron Gardenhire? (Has a manager been acquired through a trade since Pete Rose?)Nobody's actually even speculated about a second tour for Terry. Yikes!
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 I think Terry could come back as Beltran's bench coach, were they to go in that direction. Not that I'd recommend they do

Is this a Met fan bombshell, or a national bombshell? Ron, Keith, Piazza, Wright...Met bombshells (I doubt anybody in Des Moines would even care). A national bombshell would probably be an ARod, Hinch, even a tony Larussa.Would Zeile and Ventura even be bombshell candidates to their families?Lou Piniella was acquired by Tampa Bay via trade.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 Good call on Lou. I think there was even dickering goign on in that deal.Mike Piazza. There's a bomb.Valentine. H. Bomb.Bobby Cox. Nuclear megaton bomb.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 the bomb already went off guys, Martino generated uber-engagement off that nonsense.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 Jeez, Bobby V would be *perfect* for this team, wouldn't he? Wow.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 I don't think Bobby V is up to the 9-10 months it takes to be an MLB manager at this point. Bobby Cox lolol...
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 Maybe not, but *this* team? Young, likable players, with lots of position flexibility? Wowee.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 I don't think Bobby V is up to the 9-10 months it takes to be an MLB manager at this point.I don't either, but the word "bombshell" just makes my mind race through available names. Ichiro Suzuki? Jerry Seinfeld? Barney Rubble?Hey, Bobby's advancing years are part of what would make it land with that sort of megatonnage.

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 I just can't figure why Beltran would want the job. He already has experience with the Wilpons so he knows how they work and how they undercut the front office and the manager. Why bother?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 There's a lot of folks who have experience the Wilpons, who continue to work for them or return to work for them or associate with them or delight in the big league diversions of their baseball squad.
