Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 what's with the "batting 2nd" thing?I mean, i'm not big on batting order, beyond giving your best hitters the most ABs, but Pete is a RHed moose, with a lot of swing and miss in his game. That's like the complete OPPOSITE of what a #2 hitter usually looks like --LHed to block the catcher's view and throw, patient with good bat control, to hit&run or move leadoff hitter over or let him steal, and fast to stay out of DPs and score from 1st on xtra base hits by the middle of the order-- otherwise known as McNeil. And its not like Pete's PROVEN he's one of the team's best hitters, deserving of more ABs than McNeil (for example). Is breaking up the lineup with alternating LH/RH hitters more important than than putting the best guys in the best slots? Even with the "3-hitter rule" making that strategy less important?I don't know. I'm just asking. I mean, i won't lose sleep over it, but is this Calloway trying to look like he understands analytics?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 I don't think the three-hitter rule isn't in effect this year, is it? I think it's scheduled for 2020.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 It would appear that Alonso approves being called "Kong":https://twitter.com/Pete_Alonso20/status/1110990767705735169

I didn't even realize that Matz retained his rookie status in 2016, but I see that he only pitched 35 regular-season innings in 2015, and the cutoff is 50.

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 It's funny what we keep track of and what we don't. I think 9 year old me would have found it odd that we give a "rookie of the month" award but no longer track GW RBIs.I imagine Keith is still kinda pissed that they no longer keep track of that stat. Imagine being awesome at it, setting a record, getting this card in its honor:https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51NHJoMuihL.jpghttps://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51NHJoMuihL.jpg>Thinking that it's something you can brag about, put on your HoF resume, then poof. The stat is gone.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 I wonder if someone, somewhere, still tracks it. The situation that creates the stat still exists, so it must be somewhere.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Kevin Armstrong offers https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/10/sports/pete-alonso-mets.html20 facts about Pete Alonso in the Times. No. 5 is kind of unfortunate.5. He is a former Yankee. Alonso was raised in a house five miles from George M. Steinbrenner Field and played for the Yankees in the Tampa Bay Little League with Steinbrenner's grandson, Joe.After he won a title in 2002 at age 7, Alonso received a letter from the former Yankees manager Joe Torre congratulating Alonso for “upholding the reputation of our team.” Alonso framed it and hung it on his bedroom wall.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 10, 2019 Author Posted June 10, 2019 Joe Malloy was married to Steinbrenner's daughter, but I don't think they had a Joe, Jr. Maybe it's one of Hank's sons.

Jake deGrom made the cover of SI this year and I just found out. That's how much interest I've lost in that mag. I'd swear that when I was a little boy, my life revolved around SI.I was hoping Alonso's piece was the cover story but I knew otherwise right away because FAFIF would've said so if Pete made the cover. He'd deserve it, too.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 So is he an absolute shoo-in for Rookie of the Year, or is there some other candidate out there that I'm not aware of who has a decent shot?

Pete Alonso, Mets2. Mike Soroka, Braves3. Fernando Tatis Jr., PadresTatis moves down as Soroka continues his pretty incredible run atop the Braves rotation. The second-best ERA in the National League, a top-five WAR among NL pitchers and his importance to a team running away with its division all combine to move him ahead of the phenom who won't play again this season. Alonso is winning this award, though, as we've said through nearly every update. The young slugger leads the baseball in home runs, along with a top five offensive WAR and top seven OPS in the National League. Even as a first baseman, he's just barely outside the top 10 in overall WAR in the NL. With Tatis down for the count, Alonso is a stone cold lock. The rest is just window dressing.Voters are polled every week. Alonso's pulled away in these polls only very recently. Soroka was a Cy Young candidate for most of the season. BTW, this piece has Jake deGrom winning the Cy. https://www.nbcsports.com/washington/nationals/evaluating-state-2019-mlb-awards-races-september-updatehttps://www.nbcsports.com/washington/nationals/evaluating-state-2019-mlb-awards-races-september-update
