Holy crap, it's gonna be a Rivera suck-fest when the votes are announced and again at induction. Neither side of the newspaper is going to be safe for viewing.

Shoot, I overlooked Larry Walker. Although I don't know who I would drop if I did a revote. I need 11 votes!

Gonna have to abstain. If I voted, I'd have to include Curt Schilling, and I don't want to vote for Curt Schilling. That gets me out of voting for Mussina and Pettitte too. Wish I could vote for Manny. Halladay too, but he probably won't need my help.

Halladay. Mariano. Schilling.

On edit: Should have voted Vizquel too. 11 Gold Gloves should get you in if you can hit even decently. My bad. Next year.

Omar hit the same as Ozzie... only he did it during a much, much, MUCH more robust offensive era. So... not quite the same.

Bonds
Clemens
Halladay
Kent
Martinez
Ramirez
Rivera
Schilling

Between the juicers and Yankees, this is a tough ballot. Maybe a good one for Edgar, who topped 70 percent last year and doesn’t face as much of a logjam as in years past.

Martinez
Schilling
Halladay
Walker
Helton
Messina
Rolen
Vizquel

I hate this group. No to Rivera just to be a "first-ballot" dick. He can sit by the pool for a year. Yes to Edgar Martinez (DH is a position--it's a stupid position but it counts), Mike Mussina and Jeff Kent.

Vizquel was a heckuva fielder, and I booed to see an All-Star Game with a shortstop-filled AL roster, which Torre responded to by moving Vizquel to second, and keeping Jeter at short, but I don't think Vizquel was Smith's equal, on offense or defense.

Just make sure he switches off the electric security system first.

BAM!
(or should we say "ZAP!"?)

As for the Omar/ Ozzie comparison. Ozzie may not have been as good as Ozzie (nobody has ever been), but he was the best defensive shortstop in the American League while Ozzie performed his magic in the NL. And as long as baseball players have to wear a glove, IMO his superiority over his peers for an extended period of time is what the HOF is all about.

I skipped over Halladay on first go-thru with intentions to look him up.

He's in, and in easily.
--2 Cy Youngs, 5 top-5 CYs
--8 ASGs
--wins and losses "mean nothing" but a .659 winning percentage, 20th all-time, amazin in this era for a starter
--not a HUGE strikeout guy, but excellent control

I guess the only potential knock on Halladay was his short-ish prime.
Called up at age 21 but didn't break through until age 26. Then, after a brief stumble, was great for a string but had his final good season at age 34 after only eight total seasons as a full-time starter (30+ starts)
plus just two other seasons of over 20

Helluva prime though.

Halladay was, for a stretch, one of the best, if not the best, starter in baseball.

I like B-R's "MVP Shares" and "Cy Young Shares" listings, because although those awards may be flawed, they do tell you something. And Halladay is 10th in all-time Cy Young Shares:

1. Roger Clemens (7 wins) 7.66
2. Randy Johnson* (5 wins) 6.50
3. Greg Maddux* (4 wins) 4.92
4. Clayton Kershaw (3 wins) 4.56
5. Steve Carlton* (4 wins) 4.29
6. Pedro Martinez* (3 wins) 4.26
7. Tom Seaver* (3 wins) 3.85
8. Max Scherzer (3 wins) 3.73
9. Jim Palmer* (3 wins) 3.57
10. Roy Halladay (2 wins) 3.50
11. Justin Verlander (1 win) 3.40
12. Tom Glavine* (2 wins) 3.15
13. Sandy Koufax* (3 wins) 3.05

I hate Clemens and didn't vote for him here because of that, but he should probably be in. Kershaw will be in some day, and Scherzer and Verlander are going to have really compelling cases too.

(This list does, admittedly, fall apart a bit with multiple winners Johan Santana, Corey Kluber, and Bret Saberhagen 14th, 15th, and 17th, respectively.)

I'm a rather stingy HOF voter. I went with Rivera, Walker, and Helton (I know his numbers are inflated from a career in Colorado's thin are, but they are still damn good numbers). I was on the fence on Halladay and to an even lesser degree Bergman. Probably should have given the nod to Halladay.
