I’d guess he’d be replacing it with a giant statue of himself but I see he’s adding something even less needed in that stadium - more seating.Because a team that draws about 10,000 a game - I’m guessing and probably overestimating — and can probably close the upper deck needs more seating. Derek Jeter, working to make the Marlins experience as exciting as his post-game quotes.

[tweet] [/tweet]That's really cool.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Fuck that philistine Jeter whose art tastes probably run conservative if not prudish. He probably voted for Trump, too. Which means he's also for voter suppression. Which makes him a racist, too.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 So... they're tearing down the goofy Red Grooms, and putting up SRO seating? I see.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Not a teardown. They're moving the sculpture to outside the stadium. But nobody's gonna respond to my joke above by pointing out that Jeter's a mulatto?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2018 Author Posted October 17, 2018 I don't think "mulatto" is politically correct. The proper term is "high yaller".
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Here's the Jeter-fied new logo. There's no word on whether the jerseys will read "Marlin2"

No "the immovable sculpture in the Marlins' outfield was Giancarlo Stanton" jokes?LaterOE: I was typing my comment when FK posted his. Great minds think alike.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 the sculpture was the only thing i liked about the Marlins.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Marlins Park is my least favorite of all the stadiums I've been to, and I wasn't a fan of the statue. Still, I get that the locals liked it because it was "very Miami".Then I read this:The Marlins plan to promptly dismantle “Homer†and replace it with a new multi-level spectator area with no seats but room for about 400 people willing to buy cheap tickets and stand during the game. The Marlins see it as a way to target a younger demographic more interested in mingling and exploring the stadium than sitting down to watch an entire game.This. This is very Miami.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 The sculpture was incredibly dorky, but it was the only thing that gave that warehouse any character. Well, that and the bobble-head museum.

Well, that and the bobble-head museum.I've attended a couple games at Marlins Park, including Opening Day a couple years ago against the Tigers. I liked it. There was more atmosphere on Opening Day than the other, and I think the roof was open on a nice spring day. It's quirky, but I like that. the Bobble Head Museum is fun, as is the fish tank. We got to see the home run sculpture fire up both times -- and I think it might have been Stanton both times, too. There was a tribute section to the Orange Bowl, and a concession stand had Cuban food, which was a treat. Not quite as easy to get to as Joe Robbie -- which had its own exit on the turnpike -- but not that hard, either. It's colorful and very Miami. My daughter's marching band played at halftime for a bowl game there.I like it when parks have a signature element, from the Home Run Apple to Wrigley's ivy to the Reds' steam boat stacks to Comerica's tiger statues. The Home Run sculpture very much fit in and gave the park a focal point that was unique to Miami. I get that new owners want to put their stamp on the team, but I don't like this move and I don't think the new logo does much.
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 They should have moved to an amusement park. Oh wait........[tweet:lsww2b4c] [/tweet:lsww2b4c]
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 I loved it. I'll be sad it's not visible during games any more.
