  1. Marcus Stroman already showing his ability to be a good teammate by declining or refusing the opening day start. https://nypost.com/2024/03/14/sports/why-marcus-stroman-declined-yankees-opening-day-start/https://nypost.com/2024/03/14/sports/why-marcus-stroman-declined-yankees-opening-day-start/
  2. Let Vientos have a shot. JD didn't really do so well in that DH role with the Mets.
  3. =G-Fafif post_id=148492 time=1709924170 user_id=55] Canada's own Joey Votto gets an invite to camp from the Toronto Blue Jays.
  4. =smg58 post_id=147581 time=1708711825 user_id=62] Is there a Boras client for whom waiting this long paid off? Stephen Drew waited until midseason and he showed up in no shape to play. His career never recovered. Conforto got hurt before he even had a chance to wait that long. I get the feeling that Boras is determined to test Mark Twain's definition of insanity.
  5. Here are two pictures from that game. In the second one, I might be reacting to what is pictured on the winning cover: https://postimg.cc/n9B3MrRt https://postimg.cc/3d7qdMpQ Podcaster Row! Nice seats. Great work all around.
  6. Conflicting reports. Sounds like trial balloons being set aloft. If they can follow the Braves' plan and do this, I'm OK with that. https://www.nj.com/mets/2024/02/mets-near-extension-with-young-slugger-report-says.htmlhttps://www.nj.com/mets/2024/02/mets-near-extension-with-young-slugger-report-says.html According to MLB reporter Héctor Gómez, catcher Francisco Álvarez is “close to signing an extension with the Mets.” SNY's Andy Martino reported that an extension “would definitely make sense,” but there's nothing close right now. Álvarez is not due for arbitration until 2026, and even without knowing the specifics of the deal, the Mets will likely buy out all of his arbitration years and some of the 22-year-old's free agency years at a cheaper rate than he could eventually earn as a free agent in the open market. He is earning $720,000 this season.

From Heyman: Eppler, who previously had an impeccable reputation, made mistakes. But perhaps his biggest mistake was making an enemy in his own organization who knew too much.

  10. https://content.sportslogos.net/news/2024/02/2024-batting-practice-caps-mlb-baseball-sportslogosnet-new-era-all-teams-10001000.jpg> The Mets road BP cap is really cool -- and confirms the idea that the team was shooting for a 1980s vibe. The home cap evokes the racing stripes, and the road has the 1987 road script!
  11. "National League Town" is a great listen, and was excited to have it back this week!
  12. Uniwatch posted a photo of what it believes to be the Mets' new batting practice cap. This is the 9Twenty unstructured version, so the 59Fifty version the players wear will look a little better. But I don't know about these. With the racing stripe and pinstripes, are they trying to recall the 1980s era teams? Can anyone make this image smaller -- or tell me how to do it? THANKS! https://cdn.uni-watch.com/app/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-11-at-12.55.59-PM.png>

  15. =metirish post_id=145734 time=1706051998 user_id=72] That's it, Wagner and Sheffield miss out I'm disappointed for Wagner, I'm sure he'll get in next year
  16. And Nolan Ryan! A glorious 1971 action shot!
  17. I've noticed the percentages drop between 5 and 10 percent from the Ballot Tracker to when the final tallies are revealed, so I would not be stunned if it is just Beltre headed to the Hall this time. But Mauer and Helton are seemingly getting enough in the tracker to make it close. I don't think Wagner gets in this year -- but gets in next year with Ichiro and maybe Andruw Jones. Sheffield heads to the Veterans Committee.
  18. https://nypost.com/2024/01/18/sports/gary-sheffield-alex-rodriguez-hall-of-fame-voting-makes-no-sense/https://nypost.com/2024/01/18/sports/gary-sheffield-alex-rodriguez-hall-of-fame-voting-makes-no-sense/ Heyman is another HoF voter who twists himself into knots to support a position that he knows is ridiculous. Today, he is outraged that Sheffield is getting close and ARod is not. Specifically, someone is going to have to explain how PED guy Gary Sheffield is killing PED guy Alex Rodriguez in balloting. Makes zero sense on any level. I don't vote for either guy as I generally eschew PED guys (I did vote for Barry Bonds, who I'm convinced didn't take steroids until well into his career, long after he won three of his seven MVPs). And I get it if someone prefers to ignore cheating, pretend steroids don't matter or justify in any way. Steroid guys are bad, but he voted for Bonds who was good before he was bad. Sheffield was mentioned in the Mitchell Report, but ARod was suspended for 211 games. Does Heyman know when Bonds started using? Does he know when ARod started? Was Sheffield good before he allegedly used?
  19. Nice job by Stark. I saw a comparison of Wright and Utley, and Wright was better in a lot of ways. Yet Utley is getting a fair amount of votes.
  20. https://twitter.com/ShutTheDore/status/1746208912880099763 #157 Ballots from Greenwood, who writes for the Nashua Telegraph, have been mocked before. He seems to like to provoke people, and backs it up with some twisty logic. For example, he votes for the steroid guys, but not Mark McGwire, because all he did was hit home runs. https://www.nashuatelegraph.com/sports/local-sports/2015/01/04/one-more-baseball-hall-of-fame-voter-breaks-silence/https://www.nashuatelegraph.com/sports/local-sports/2015/01/04/one-more-baseball-hall-of-fame-voter-breaks-silence/ Mark McGwire did not receive my vote because his lone claim to greatness was hitting home runs during an era in which home runs have been stupendously devalued. Anyone who remembers when 20-home run seasons marked batters as top-shelf sluggers understands this. My oft-given rational includes the following: McGwire hit 583 home runs while Jim Rice hit 382. McGwire drove in 1,414 runs, Rice drove in 1,451. That statistical comparison is one patch of turf upon which sabermatricians may peacefully co-exist with those who believe that scouts know more about baseball than do many general managers. https://deadspin.com/wow-do-i-love-the-explanation-for-this-hall-of-fame-ba-1822535946https://deadspin.com/wow-do-i-love-the-explanation-for-this-hall-of-fame-ba-1822535946
  21. I think you guys might be a little hard on Steve. I'm blessed that I get to see games in other parks, and I'm seeing that the huge scoreboards, spirit squads and such are pretty common. I'm an old-timer, and I could do without them. Heck, I don't need fancy restaurants and micro brews. I go to a game, stay in my seat, eat a hot dog and keep score. But I'm a dinosaur. Stadiums are creating a "ballpark experience" so people can pay $100+ for a ticket and feel like they are being entertained even if they don't really like baseball. I actually think the Mets are trying to play catch-up. And it's not just baseball. I went to a Red Wings game recently and the team has a drumline entertaining people in the concourse. Louder than heck. But a lot of people stood and watched and cheered. They had the massive scoreboard and spirit squads. They projected things onto the ice before the game with an elaborate show to go with the players entering. Definitely not the kind of thing we used to see with the Islanders at Nassau Coliseum. On the field, I can't complain about spending to get Scherzer because the idea was to pair him with the all-world ace deGrom and have a studly top of the rotation, or at least one ace when one or the other went down. The 2002 deadline deals sucked, but they didn't want to give up what little prospect capital they had. They still won 100 games -- and under the old rules would have tied for first place. They lost in the playoffs to a team that got hot at the right time and took out the Dodgers after they beat us. I think last year was just one of those perfect storm years when everything just falls apart. Not resigning Bassitt was probably a mistake in hindsight. I don't mind the retired numbers. How many years did we complain about not saluting our own history? After Doc and Straw, they'll probably retire No. 5 and that will be it until deGrom in a decade. Loved the Old-timer's Day and the Seaver statue. I get the frustration. Last year sucked. I wanted more.
