  1. funnily enough, I get Buck and co over here, so I'm not sure who gets the "international" feed! LGM!
  2. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: it's tough to make a case for Lagares over several guys in the right column. Basically, you're looking at a defensive replacement who wouldn't also be your 1st pinch hitter or 1st pinch runner. He's had a .780 ops vs lefties. Cutter's is .720 Grandy's is .563 Conforto is .397 (small sample alert and his Minor League numbers didn't show a convincing split) and while Cespedes has knocked the shite out of them for us, his career OPS vs lefties is .787. To my mind you can make a very good case for starting him against the lefties.
  3. you have to start worrying about DeGrom a bit. I didn't see last night past the 2nd inning so I don't know whether it looked like he was unlucky or whether he was getting knocked around, but you have to think he's getting gassed. I didn't understand not calling up Dillon Gee, roster wise Johnny Monell has had ONE at bat. Dillon Gee could have been on tap to be a tandem starter to De Grom or even to replace him for a turn through the 6 man rotation. Now we're left with a situation where all of our pitchers are question marks of one form or another and despite all the callups we've got Familia and Clipard still looking a bit overused
  4. out of interest, can he come back within 10 days of being sent down if the rosters expand?
  5. and Carlos Gomz' OPS as an Astro is now ? .516 Maybe that Hip is bothering him!
  6. Lagares has had a 1.060 ops in August, so if Terry's serious about the "you hit you play" his game time should be going up not down. I'd be tempted to dump Uribe tbh, much as I've liked his nature.
  7. I think Megdal is (as usual) overplaying the thing to the point where he undermines the actual legitimate point he's making. In terms of Gomez, I think it's acceptable for them Mets to think IF Carlos Gomez' hip is bothering him, and we see that there's a genuine attrition (and don't forget they may well have been able to compare to what they had when he was at the club) then what are the chances that he'll outproduce Cuddyer/Conforto/Lagares and if he can't out produce them, what is the point and certainly it is not worth flipping Wheeler plus Flores for him - and certainly (small sample size accepted) his OPS of .630 since joining Heuston might indicate they had a point. Of course, Yoenis Cespedes has an OPS of only .676 ... and by all accounts no dodgy hip.
  8. Christ it's a pretty sorry mess. The issue to me is that you've only got Gomez for 15 months, and he's signed at VERY reasonable money, while hip problems can cause precipitous declines (see Albert Belle) normally it's seen as an attritional problem that worsens over time, so now they waved the biggest RED FLAG over him that anyone's ever seen and potentially damaged his future earnings and so on. Lord knows Boras is likely compiling the dossier to disprove it now.
  9. You do have to wonder how he could have been stupid enough to take the risk. You'd have to think he was convinced by someone that they'd found a masking agent that would work and that he was convinced his shoulder wouldn't get back to full strength without additional help. It's funny, obviously it's easy to throw guys under the proverbial bus, but you do have to see the human side of why in the above. the raise he earned by successfully surviving 3 seasons in the majors was enough to change his life and probably his family's beyond recognition. More then anything he needed to make it happen. It fell apart on him and he was desperate enough to risk the same russian roulette on the way back. I know people will say (for example) Logan Verrett hasn't (probably) used PEDs and he's struggling too, or Anthony Recker might be back down to Vegas and not able to provide for his kid as he'd like and if you cheat, you're potentially cheating them too, but it's hard to be too hard on a guy who's so desperate that he takes that chance.
  10. Out of interest, can they use someone in the final innings of the other game and then option them down?
  11. So is there anyone on the current 40 man roster who hasn't been counted yet?
  12. Wow. Ambriorix Burgos. There's a gun-toting crazy man I'd forgotten all about.
  13. Wowza poor aul CC Sabathia (Keith and Ron seem very worried about the big fella!) OOOPS poor aul Yankees - look at the contract! 5 years/$122M (2012-16), plus 2017 vesting option signed extension with NY Yankees 10/31/11 12-15:$23M/year, 16:$25M, 17:$25M vesting option ($5M buyout) 2017 salary guaranteed if Sabathia 1) does not end 2016 on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury, 2) does not spend more than 45 days in 2016 on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury or 3) does not make more than six relief appearances in 2016 because of a left shoulder injury no-trade protection perks: suite on road trips If he doesn't hit the DL with a shoulder injury they're on the hook for another 50 million after this season! Yikes!
  14. I heard Carig on Baseball Prospectus' season previews and thought he seemed pretty good. I'll be honest and say Rubin's the one I read the most, but I'm pretty ambivalent about his style and "all the sarcasm, all the time" feel. I've always liked Tracky.
  15. every team makes roster moves on the basis of Free Agency and arbitration. The Chicago Cubs are going to keep Kris Bryant in the minors so that they get another year of team control and nobodies saying that's due to money, it's just playing the standard cost/benefit analysis that any intelligent organisation will do.
  16. That actually makes some amount of sense in that there seemed to be a fairly well accepted line that pitchers liked throwing to Piazza. Someone on a BP podcast (I think, but maybe it was one of the fangraphs ones) made the point that he wasn't like Javy Lopez where pitchers (Greg Maddux especially) felt he hurt them. ON EDIT Though the same articles say that Lopez was good too. So much for that.
  17. Edgy, it's a very minor thing in all this, but please tell me Greg Peavy wasn't actually born in 1999. Surely there's a law against having a 15 year old toiling in the minors
  18. also there's the small matter of him hitting the catcher with his follow through and not giving a flying fuck about it. Honestly I know he's a kid but that kind of stuff really has to be more then 5 games. That's the equivalent of a 1 game ban in football, (real football) and jesus you get that for getting 2 yellow cards.
  19. What's more ludicrous to me is HOW STUPID he is "Now, listen, Bartolo Colon? Great sign. He had an unbelievable year. But, for me, what does he serve for you as a Mets fan? So you can go 78-85? Why not bring up a kid from Double-A and give a kid some experience and try to find lightning in a bottle? They've never done that." Em, Jacob de Grom, Rafael Montero, Familia, Mejia, and also his stuff about d'Arnaud and Recker ... I could hit better left-handed than the schmucks theyve got in there now, said Lo Duca, a career .286 hitter with 80 homers and 481 RBI over his 11-year career. Surely that's trying to capture "lightening in a bottle"
  20. what's the story with this delay? long/short. have bed to get to
  21. I didn't get to watch the whole thing, but in the first 3/4 innings the mets were definitely getting totally done on balls & strikes. Sure Bartolo didn't exactly help, but it was genuinely unreal to watch again & again a pitch WAY low/inside/outside being called a strike.
  22. It was horrendous to see. Simply awful.
  23. Mr KOO is currently pitching against the dodgers. Looked pretty good so far vs Andr Ethier. No word on whether or not he's going to bat too.
  24. Well being in the first round of cuts at spring training is going to herald a lost season for Edgin, who's bumped off the 40 at some stage and gets claimed by the Diamondbacks (owns a career -58 ops+ against)
  25. I'd be thinking he should lead off against Righties (.344 obp vs RHP), and Chris Young (.363 opb vs LHP) should against Lefties and get ourselves more Juan Lageres in Centrefield.
