  1. not going too well for RA, 4 runs given up through 5. PRetty horribly unlucky with a passed ball that interrupted what would have been a double play.
  2. RA about to pitch!
  3. and Dia Duit, from the game I don't need to do the night time feed to have an excuse to watch!
  4. this is going to be a weird one, but what's totally bizarre is how Tim Raines seems to be coming out as the winner of it. He's a bona-fide Hall of Fame player (unlike Jack Morris) but it's weird that it's the strongest class in living memory that's bringing him to the forefront. I don't really know what lines I'd draw on the 'steroid' issue, but guys who sat right through it and didn't bother to report it are the last ones that should be high and mighty - for all their wailing and gnashing of teeth "Some may view this ballot as our punishment for doing such an awful job of protecting the game from steroid abuse. And we did do a very bad job (myself included). Maybe it is justice."

In addition, the Mets and Cyclones were both named as defendants in Picard's lawsuit. There was an implication they were using money from baseball operations to invest with Uncle Bernie. I don't have a copy of the lawsuit handy; perhaps bmlo does. I also seem to recall some discussion surrounding Bonilla's buyout being invested in such a way. It seems clear to me that they were using money from their investments to support baseball operations. I think edgy's point is totally on the money. The one caveat I'd have is that one of those investments (SNY) may have substantially benefited from below market price deal on the rights to the Mets games and that may be why the losses sustained in actual mets (which they have subsidised until the point when they had no working capital to do so) are higher then they should be. You'd have to step back and look at the real structure of the inter-company/related party transactions to genuinely unpick the SNY/Mets/Citifield revenue/costs.

  7. Going by that he's looking for essentially two extra years @ 13 per, meaning the 3 year costs in 31 million and the mets are offering 3 years for 26. I'm wondering if you could do something like this. 3 years plus option @ 10 million or buyout @ 2.5 million. That splits the difference in the minimum value, but gives the mets the chance of the upside of a 7.5 million dickey in 2016 if he can still throw the fucking thing. I was sort of imagining a cool wakefield style deal where that option then becomes for 2017 for 9 & 2 mill buyout and then 8 & 1 million and on ad infiintum. 65 year old hurler ahoy!
  8. The latest report is that Dickey would sign for 2 years and $26M. If that is indeed the price, there is no sensible reason to say no. if that's the price, and especially if he's still only going to cost $5M next year, i'd jump on that like a sugar-addled suburbanite kid on a backyard trampoline The $5 million is the bit that I haven't seen actually stated. If it's seeking a 3 year deal for $31 million (ie: next year's 5, plus another 2 years @ 13 each) that's one thing. If it's next year and 2014 for $26 million, that's another. In all honesty, if you told me you'd get him to sign an extension which gives you him for 3 more years @ less then Andy Pettite is getting for this year I'd have think you'd do it unless you were given a great deal of prospects in return. However, RA is probably more motivated to get an extension done then the Mets are. To some degree he REALLY needs to get one done. He's still only an injury away from retiring with only $5 million guaranteed & a 38 this is definitely his best time to try and secure his future. That means two things, he needs to get as much as he can, but he also needs to do it. To some degree I think the mets are happy to wait him out a little bit and if it was my money I'd probably play the hand in the same way.
  9. I think it seems like quite a lot of dough. He was no better then Angel Pagan in 2012 & 2010.
  10. wow. worst call ever. worst fan reaction i've ever seen too. NOBODY comes out well.
  11. I had typed this ****Well there's that Catcher chap called ........ Todd Hundley ****** but got presented with the New Post on this topic screen. So I'll say the other - Mike Piazza
  12. Continuing my current theme (rather rotund gentleman of afro-american origin) Mo Vaughn
  13. funnily enough, because i started liking the mets in 1997, 20 HR seasons, seemed relatively common. I bet Butch Huskey had one too!!!
  14. oh oh oh I've thought of one that I really want to say Bernard Gilkey.
  15. doff of the cap to whomever (G-FAFIF I assume) is quoting Primo Levi. He's one of my favourite authors. Obviously everything's translated, so it isn't the same as devouring Auster or Irving, but his grasp of humanity is incredible.
  16. I don't think he'll sign for 6*120 this winter. If they're getting him this winter it's got to be for 7/8 years @ about 20 per or 3/4 at mega money. I'm thinking if we are going to sign him it'll take something like a 7 year deal for 140 million, plus options @ 10 (player) 20 (club) for the following 2 years.
  17. what nearly happened, and would have been totally head splittingly hilarious was a 5 way tie for two divisions and two wild cards. How'd they have worked out them apples.
  18. You'd have to think if Clayton Kershaw repeats yesterday's "heroics" he's going to win. Guy, not 100% comes back to try and save team, keeps team in race. America is still land of the free and home of the brave.

The Nats/Fish were heading into the bottom of the 9th with the Marlins up by 1 ... and now it's been delayed for what must be two hours by this point. I believe Heath Bell had already warmed up to come in, but now has been sitting all this time. I was watching the game as it happened - there was all sorts flying onto the field.
  20. oooh, Murph, an error is a great way to keep the braves on the field for a few minutes more.
  21. seriously they should be having as many conversations as possible. also, if they wanted to a hit batter here might instigate a kerfuffle which'd give the rain long enough to arrive.
  22. needs to arrive damn soon though.
  23. having seen what came into dc earlier i think a rainout's a distinct possibility.
  24. but can we all agree NO to Wally Backman?
