But it's clear enough he worked within the restrictions of the budget he was given. Yes, I agree with this. Although in Sandy's defense, isn't his whole MO making good baseball decisions while saving money? I think that's literally why he was hired. It's the Moneyball thing.

(The one game where he gave up four, and his one-inning start in Philly being the exceptions.) It will be interesting to see how this season is remembered in Mets history. '85 Gooden triggers incredible memories for me. It was an amazing season, and although I considered myself a Mets fan before, I think it wasn't until 1985 that I became a fan at this level. It still hurts to think of that last game in St. Louis, but I think I've since justified it as making 1986 even better. (though I would have loved to see '85 Gooden tear up the post-season. Wow) On the other hand, I barely remember Dickey's Cy Young season. In fact, I'm not even sure what year it was. 2013? 2012? There are times I forget it even happened. This season, as much as I am in awe of what deGrom did, I can't help but feel incredible frustration that the Wilpon's finances deprived us of a great pennant race. It's so incredibly wrong. '85 was the year that got me all in, too. (Because, as always, we're the same person.)

  6. Ceetar wrote: Just don't tarnish Wright's moment but injecting Reyes into it. That, too. You can't do that at this point; that ship has sailed. If Wright had played part of the season and was winding down slowly, then maybe you could have planned it that way. (If Reyes is, in fact, done, which something tells me he thinks he isn't.) But not any more.
  7. I really enjoy playing Strat, but I've never had the energy to go all in and join a league or replay a whole season. smg and I played, at least once, in my office at Stony Brook a few years back. (Popping this over to the main forum.)
  8. It's fascinating how their careers are starting and (probably?) ending at the same time, in the same place, and yet they took wildly divergent paths to get here. Agree on the plaque, although it's going to take some time, and I think his domestic violence charge is 98% of the reasoning behind that. That said, I also wouldn't be surprised to see him in camp on a minor league deal next year, nor would I be surprised to see him coaching somewhere in the system.
  9. MFS62 wrote: I had to kick-start my heart. Thanks a lot for that thread title. (Pegged my sarcasm meter) Later Yeah, the ol' misleading CPF thread title is kind of an overplayed trope around here, but sometimes it's too easy.
  10. Strong recommendation for Gelbs and Randazzo's weekly podcast, which I finally caught up to on my long drive home last night. Nine episodes so far, a mix of current guys (Nimmo, Flores), retired guys (Magadan, Hundley), and others (Gary). I know they won't keep it up in the offseason, but I wish they would. The Flores, Ronnie, and Magadan interviews were my favorites so far.
  11. Darling Baez, of course, who had a 4.54 ERA across two levels this year. http://macksmets.blogspot.com/2018/09/mets-release-23-minor-league-players.html Mets Release 23 Minor League Players P - Victor Isturiz Juan Martinez Marbin Montijo Kevin McGowan Haniel Ogando Miguel Mata Ragul Rodriguez Darling Baez Felix Sosa Alejando Media C - Tyler Moore Alexis Marquez IF - Jorge Martinez Ruben Monegro Dale Burdick Wilmy Valdez David Lozano OF - Julio Rene Jeison Rodriguez Gene Cone Ian Strom Ezequiel Pena Euilses Sanchez (Also notable, former Met Kevin McGowan.)
  12. If this is it -- and yes, because this is the kind of shit that happens to the Mets -- then that sucks. He's absolutely on my all-time 25-man roster.
  13. Benjamin Grimm wrote: So how many runs do the Mets have to score tonight to get Scherzer's ERA over 9.00? Around 150.
  14. Trying to figure out some of the dupes. How about Asdrubal Cabrera for these? Second Basemen 61) ___________________: 30.1 Third Basemen 87) ___________________: 30.1
  15. RF #17 is Gary Sheffield.
  16. Which means catcher 92 has to be... Todd Hundley?
  17. Just to needle Vic, I'm putting Almost All-Time Met Left Fielder Kevin McReynolds at #100.
  18. I'm gonna say 3B #21 is Wright.
  19. I'll say one of the #5 catchers is Gary Carter.
  20. And that would *never* fly in any other sport. Football: Can't throw the ball? Well, the other team is going to stick eight guys on the line and stuff the run until you get better. Basketball: Can't hit jumpers? Then hang out there all you want, but we're going to clog the middle so you can't drive to the hoop until you get better.
  21. I even hate the *thought* of banning shifts. I'd rather see the DH in the NL than see shifts banned. Don't like it? Then stop fucking hitting ground balls to the right side. Done.

  23. Frayed Knot wrote: - and that leaves the Nationals to strike a two-year deal with ... the Fresno Grizzlies Every year, this reminds me of the shenanigans we all pulled trying to connect our entire friend group for our junior prom. "Well, that means you have to go with Eric, I guess, because he's the only one left."
  24. I'm the biggest McReynolds fan here, and I can objectively say that Cleon is above him on the all-time LF list. Maybe not far above, but above.
  25. They were also FAs, and with our guys we're buying out some arbitration years. So it's not an exact parallel.
