  1. Wouldn't it be neat to be Pedro Martinez's kid? That would probably be a lot of fun.
  2. Great job, Doc! I liked how you actually broke down the repertoire of each starter and everyone in Atlanta's bullpen, along with stats on how each hitter on the Mets' roster and every extra possible callup hits each of those pitches. Nice work.
  3. Elster88 wrote: Maybe he'll take it as incentive to get in better shape this offseason. Maybe he and his wife will stop having kids -- or schedule them for offseason deliveries -- so he can pitch better.
  4. I like Seo. I like what he's done this year. But, like Heilman, this is the first time he's shown any extended run of success. So I'd say he's no sure thing for '06. I agree that he'll have a leg up, but he's not a definite. The only definites right now are probably Pedro and Benson (and Trax if he's still here, which he probably will be).
  5. I see 62's point, but I disagree that this team isn't lovable. It's another post, but I do love these guys -- Reyes, Wright, Floyd, Pedro, a handful of others. I know they're not caricatures the way the '62 team was, but I think they're more lovable than this club has been in recent years.
  6. I'm giving Matsui six points for every game the rest of the season, just so we can look back in a few years and say something like "How the hell was Matsui the third-most productive Met in 2005?!?"
  7. Perhaps Scott Strickland can learn how to be a power-hitting left-handed first baseman instead. The Astros need to believe in theirSelf.
  8. Edgy DC wrote: George Brett's curse of being alnost an exact contemporary of perhaps the greatest player to ever play his position. That, of course, is Phil Garner.
  9. Zambrano 3 Beltran 1 (he loses points for running the club out of the 1st inning) Matsui 3 Wright 2 Padilla 1
  10. I'm tempted to vote Jones. He's still a kid! Keep in mind, Hank Aaron never hit 50 in a season, and he got to 755 just fine. I think he'll keep getting better, which is scary.
  11. In the Red Sox game tonight, Gabe Kapler blew out his Achilles tendon rounding the bases on a Tony Graffanino home run, and had to be replaced in mid-trot by a pinch runner. The PR was Alejandro Machado, who scored his first major league run. Kapler will miss the rest of the year due to the injury. Weird. Rule 5.10 (1) -- If an accident to a runner is such as to prevent him from proceeding to a base to which he is entitled, as on a home run hit out of the playing field, or an award of one or more bases, a substitute runner shall be permitted to complete the play.
  12. WHY does Beltran try to steal third with Wright at the plate again!? This guy's gonna be the death of me for the next six years.
  13. If he demanded 37, that would be very Selfish.
  14. I figured this was the best place to put this, because it's just too sad to make its own thread. Magic Number Watch Mets Division Elimination: 7 Mets WC Elimination: 12
  15. A bandwagon Red Sox fan? I'm shocked. /sarcasm mode turned off
  16. Is the five Kranepool? He played some left, I think.
  17. Wait. Scratch that. I had five right. Leave Grote in the seven spot and put Hundley at the six. 1: Mookie 2: Alfonzo 3: Hernandez 4: Kingman 5: Strawberry 6: Hundley 7: Grote 8: Ordonez 9: Seaver
  18. Since you said I had five right, and we know who four of them are, I'll change my guess to (bold ones are ones we know are right): 1: Mookie 2: Alfonzo 3: Hernandez 4: Kingman 5: Strawberry 6: Grote 7: Stearns 8: Ordonez 9: Seaver Ordonez eliminates Buddy. Since there are no LFs, Kevin McReynolds is out. We need a 2B; I'll take Fonzie. Dave Kingman played some LF, so I'll stick him in the four. I'll move Grote up a slot. That leaves me with one catcher, so I'll stick John Stearns in the seven, even though I'm sure that's wrong.
  19. No, that was her middle name.
  20. Not to mention that Buddy would be exhausted from all that batting.
  21. Nah, it's James. I dated a Kristen Margaret once, so that's where that came from.
  22. WASHINGTON NATIONALS (73-71, 33-39 away) at NEW YORK METS (71-72, 41-27 home) Tonight 7 pm: John Patterson (8-5, 2.74 ERA) vs Tom "Mike" Glavine (10-12, 3.89 ERA) Patterson has the flu, and will not make this start. Considering the way Frank Robinson has managed his pitching staff recently (see "Who's Not?" below), I wouldn't be surprised to see Patterson start and only pitch one inning, or to see him throw Steve Rogers and Charlie Lea out there. Robinson's plan was to use a four-man rotation the rest of the way, but it looks like this is going to be a patchwork game. Glad to see he takes the Mets' offense seriously. If Patterson does come around and make the start, however... the Nats have lost all three of his starts against the Mets in '05, although Patterson has pitched well. Glavine is 2-0 against Washington in 2005, with two decent starts. Side note: Glavine was selected as the Mets' 2005 Roberto Clemente Award winner, so congratulations to Tom for all his hard work. Tomorrow 7 pm: Esteban "Stevie" Loaiza (10-10, 3.79 ERA) vs Kristin Margaret Benson (9-7, 4.00 ERA) Loaiza has had a nice bounce-back season, somewhere between his great season with the White Sox in '03 and his bleh stretch with the MFYs in '04. The Mets beat him up a bit in April in Washington, but he struck out sixteen in fourteen-pluls innings in his next two starts against them. Benson's line in his last start against the Nats: 2/3 8 6 6 0 0 (L, 9-5). Thursday 1 pm: Livan "The Porch Light" Hernandez (15-7, 3.83 ERA) vs Jae "Weong" Seo (7-2, 1.98 ERA) Livan Hernandez has haunted the Mets' nightmares the last few seasons, averaging 163 pitches and thirteen innings per game in his career agains them, pitching to a 0.52 ERA. He has never lost a game to the Mets. He plans to pitch this game left-handed "because those guys make it too easy." Side note: In August 2004, Hernandez also started in the only game I ever saw in Olympic Stadium, pitching six innings and taking the loss against Houston. Jae Seo declined to comment for this IGT. It is believed that he's still angry over the Cardinals' snub when he asked to pull down the ceremonial "10" from the Busch Stadium wall Saturday night in honor of Rusty Staub, who Seo credits as his favorite Met. Who's Hot ** Rick Short. A career minor-leaguer, the 32-year-old Short is 3-for-9, with two home runs -- off Dontrelle Willis and John Smoltz -- since his callup when the minor league season ended. Short flirted with .400 this season, buying it a few drinks but never getting past first base. He finished at .383. ** Jose Guillen still has one of the most bizarre power splits, hitting 21 of his 24 home runs on the road. Shea Stadium is the only NL East ballpark in which he has not homered in 2005, despite 21 AB. Who's Not ** Frank Robinson yanked starter John Halama from Wednesday night's game after just five batters. Only one run had scored. Halama had thrown only 24 pitches. "I didn't like what I saw," the manager said. "I wasn't going to sit there and wait 'til he threw the game away in the first inning. If you want to pitch for me, you have to throw strikes." ** Chad Cordero -- the last of eight pitchers in nine innings on Sunday -- allowed three ninth-inning runs, including homers to both Joneses, for his sixth blown save of the year. He leads the NL with 44 saves. ** The Mets' offense. 31 runs in 11 games in September. Ugly. Playoff Implications This week is the conference finals in my fantasy baseball league, but Jae Seo and Victor Zambrano will watch this one from my bench. Oh, wait, you mean the real playoffs? This series has no real playoff implications. Let's go with this instead: Magic Number Watch Mets Division Elimination: 8. Mets WC Elimination: 14. Nationals Division Elimination: 9. 23. No need for an update. She still looks like Derek Lowe in drag.
  24. I think Tavarez might be a nutjob. Didn't he punch a wall or something and break his hand? Maybe last year? If I was Mike, I'd be pissed about getting beaned too. He does seem to get beaned a lot.
  25. I want you all to get up out of your chairs, stick your head out the window and yell... Let's! Go! Mets! =orange]Let's! Go! Mets! Let's! Go! Mets! =orange]Let's! Go! Mets!
