  1. And that's for Cliff. Helluva season from the big guy.
  2. Hey! Heath Bell! I remember the Mets used to have a guy with that name who used to pitch once in a while.
  3. Zambrano, despite sucking today, has 7 K's. His ball is really moving all over the place. If he could only harness that, I'd ask him to close in '06.
  4. (Psst. Aaron. Groove one.)
  5. Seawolf18: See that "31" hanging on the outfield wall? Let me tell you about a guy who was a Met before you were born; a guy named Mike Piazza. You know how everybody here at Bob Murphy Stadium is wearing David Wright shirts? Well, back then, everybody at the old Shea Stadium wore Piazza shirts. Mike Piazza used to hit home runs to all fields, all the time -- and he used to make it look so easy. It felt like he didn't even step; he just flicked his wrists out there, and WHAM it was off the scoreboard, or over the camera stand, or into the old picnic area. He hit home runs in every big spot you could hit a home run; he used to hit them off good pitchers, bad pitchers, every pitcher. He was a guy who made you stop whatever you were doing and watch, because you never knew how far he'd hit one. It got hard for him at the end of his time here, because as often as he used to hit home runs, it seemed like he grounded out a lot too. He wasn't as great a hitter as he was when he was younger, but when he got a hold of one, he could still make that ball fly. Wear that 31 shirt proudly, kiddo; Mike Piazza is a big piece of Mets history.
  6. "Mullet" Zeile is in the house; they just tried to interview him, but Matt's microphone went out.
  7. Mike Jacobs says... and then Victor Diaz says... "Oh, yeah?"
  8. Fair point. My post sounds much dickier than I intended it to. I apologize.
  9. I'm going to pretend you're kidding, and that you didn't realize that was Hendrix. The biggest metalhead to hit major league baseball since Phil Lynott hit .288 for the Phillies in 1973, and he picked funk music for his first AB as a Met? I think not.
  10. So this is the end Time to say good-bye So this is the end Where do we go Where did all the time go So where do we go From here So this is the end Have you come to be my friend Time to say good-bye So this is the end Will you stay until the end So this is the end We'll be coming back again
  11. I agree. I'm going to miss this season when it's gone.
  12. The last two rookie managers to finish with a winning record after inheriting teams that finished at least 20 games below .500 the previous year were Mike Scioscia (2000) and Davey Johnson (1984). Both teams won the World Series two years later. Maybe this really is 1984. Is Steve Trachsel the new Walt Terrell? Who will be Gary Carter this winter? Hmm...
  13. Tell Mike "Thank You" from me, Ms. 17, & Little Future 17.
  14. I have to figure McKeon's gone also. They say (whoever "they" are) that he's lost the team, the players don't respect him any longer, etc. He's old, and if his contract is up, I'd bet they let him go.
  15. Good times last night at Holy Cross, at the Sports Guy book signing. He packed a ballroom... mostly HC students, but I sat next to two guys who drove out from UMass, and talked to two Met fans on the autograph line who had driven out for the event as well. Simmons was funny; he gave a quick twenty-minute speech with advice on college life, answered some questions, and signed my book with a "Let's Go Mets," which was funny.Big thumbs up.
  16. Glavine 6 Wright 2 Piazza 1 Jacobs 1
  17. I never thought I'd say this... but I'm actually looking forward to having Tom Glavine in the rotation in 2006.
  18. David Ortiz just drilled one over the Monster in left-center to tie the game at 4 in the bottom of the eighth. This guy is sick. 20 of his 47 home runs have either tied the game or given the Sox the lead. Can you believe the Twins just gave him away? Wow.
  19. Get one of the West Coast trips out of the way early. I'm down with that.
  20. They finally heard our pleas and released a Bill Simmons column anthology. It's only his best Red Sox-based ones, but I figure if we buy it, they'll eventually publish his complete works. He's doing a book tour stop at Holy Cross in Worcester, MA tonight; I will be there.
  21. Sure. Go with that. I was only a math minor; although I took Stats in grad school, so you'd think I'd be better than that.
  22. Okay, you're cruel and heartless. But I do somewhat agree with you. As much of a great Met fan as she was, she did get a little annoying.
  23. And so another season ends. Nobody really gives a rat's ass about the Rockies, but here's what you need to know about the series: Higher Ground: Thu 9/29 COL (Kim) @ NYM (Glavine) Fri 9/30 COL (Kim) @ NYM (Benson) Sat 10/1 COL (Esposito) @ NYM (Seo) Sun 10/2 COL (Cook) @ NYM (Zambrano) No, that's not a misprint. Tonight it's Sun-Woo Kim, former Expo, and tomorrow it's Byung-Hyun Kim, former Yankee-on-Arizona's-payroll. Hotter Than The Sun: The Mets are 9-3 in their last twelve, and have won four straight series. Mike Jacobs has 4 HR and 9 RBI in his last ten games. Miguel Cairo hasn't sucked too badly lately. Hell, even Carlos Beltran has started to hit; he's hit in 26 of his last 31, hitting .299 over that span. History In The Making: Mike Piazza has 396 career home runs. 398 would tie him with Dale Murphy for 43rd on the All-Time list. Al Kaline and Andres Galarraga are tied at 399. Jose Reyes has 59 SB, just seven behind Roger Cedeno's Mets-record 66. Reyes leads the NL with 679 AB, which ties him for 29th on the all-time AB/season list. The NL single-season record is 701, set in 1984 by an old Phillies second baseman whose name will not be spoken here. Reyes has also scored 99 runs. The last Met to score 100 was Edgardo Alfonzo in 2000 (109). David Wright has 42 doubles, just two behind Bernard Gilkey's Mets-record 44. The Pride: Mike Piazza plays possibly his last game as a Met this weekend. Willie Randolph said he's going to try to get Mike in every game, so make a big sign, put on your faded PIAZZA 31 shirt, and get the hell out to Shea this weekend and show that guy how much you love him. A video tribute is planned for Sunday. Lethal Combination: The Mets are the first team in history with two players age 22 or younger play at least 150 games at short and third: Wright (157) and Reyes (156) games. Cliff Floyd and David Wright both have 97 RBI. The last time the Mets had more than one 100-RBI man was 1999: Piazza (124), Ventura (120), and Alfonzo (108). 'Til The River Runs Dry: The Mets have stolen 152 bases this year, second in the majors to Anaheim (155). The club record is 157, set in 1987. Time To Get Tough: At 80-78, the Mets need to split this series to guarantee their first season above .500 since 2001, when they finished 82-80. They won 94 games in 2000. Loser: Braden Looper hasn't pitched since September 21, when he blew his eighth save of the year in Florida. Don't expect to see him this weekend either. Welcome To The Party: The Mets need to average 77,720 fans per game in this series to top 3,000,000 fans this year. edit: fixed stat typo
  24. I'm still trying to figure out how this is the "biggest game of the year." Did I miss something? Did the Astros give back a few of their wins?
